    Notes: Background: Japanese cedar (Cryptmeria japonica: CJ) pollinosis is one of the most important allergic diseases in Japan. Recently, the second major allergen (Cry j II) was isolated from CJ pollen. There have been no prevalence studies of sensitivity to Cry j I and Cry j II among a large number of patients with pollinosis.Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the prevalence of sensitivity to Cry j I and Cry j II. We measured specific IgE antibodies to these allergens in the sera of 145 patients. Furthermore, comparison of the sensitivity to Cry j I and Cry j II was examined by the hisiamine release assay.Methods: Specific IgE antibodies to Cry j I and Cry j II were assayed by a fluorometric ELISA. Allergen-specific histamine release was measured by a radioimmunoassay kit,Results: More than 90% of 145 patients had specific IgE antibodies to both allergens. the remainder had specific IgE to either one or the other. There were seasonal changes in the level of specific IgE. The changes in the levels of anti-Cry j II IgE antibodies were parallel to those of anti-Cry j I IgE. The histamine release assay with leucocytes from the patients demonstrated that the allergenic potency of the two allergens is almost the same.Conclusion: Cry j II is an as important a major allergen as Cry j I.

    Notes: Background: To test the hypothesis that urinary levels of arachidonic acid metabolites may be a predicting factor of the effects of pranlukast, a selective leukotriene (LT) antagonist, on chronic adult asthma, we investigated the relationship between its clinical efficacy and urinary eicosanoid levels. Methods: An open, multicenter trial was conducted involving 38 stable moderate and severe asthmatic patients (mean percent predicted FEV1 was 71%). All patients received pranlukast (225 mg twice daily) for 4 weeks after a 2-week run-in period. Urinary levels of LTE4, 11-dehydro-thromboxane (TX) B2, 2,3- dinor-6-keto-prostaglandin (PG) F1α, and creatinine were measured in 3-h urine collected on day 1 of the treatment. The responder was defined by an improvement of asthma symptom scores and peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR). Results: One patient was excluded because of an adverse effect, nausea. Thirteen out of 37 subjects were responders and 24 were nonresponders. There were no significant differences in patients' backgrounds and urinary arachidonate levels between the two groups. The urinary LTE4 to 2,3-dinor-6-keto-PGF1α ratio in the responder was significantly lower (P=0.01) than that in the nonresponder. In all patients, a significant inverse correlation was revealed between the baseline urinary LTE4/2,3-dinor-6-keto-PGF1α ratio and the improvement of PEFR in the morning (r=−0.43, P=0.007). Conclusions: These data suggested that the urinary ratio of LTE4 to 2,3-dinor-6-keto-PGF1α might be one of the predictive markers of the clinical efficacy of this LT-receptor antagonist in asthmatic subjects.

    Notes: The title compound crystallized in the monoclinic space group P21/n (No. 14) [a = 11.211 (5), b = 12.862 (3), c = 23.05 (1) Å, β = 94.37 (3)°, V = 3314 (2) Å3, Z = 2]. The polyanion can be regarded as a dimer of a phenylphosphonatohexamolybdate, (C6H5P)Mo6O23(H2O)3, linked by four O atoms. In this monomeric unit the six molybdenum octahedra are grouped into two parts consisting of four and two edge-sharing octahedra, respectively. These two parts are connected by two corner-sharing O atoms to form a bent Mo6 ring. The phenylphosphonate group coordinates to the Mo6 ring from the narrow side as a tripodal ligand. The {(C6H5P)Mo6O21(H2O)3}2 units form layers parallel to (001) and the structure is stabilized by hydrogen bonds between water and neighboring anions. The monomeric unit has been shown to be a key structure in the process of deducing the aqueous solution structures of the (C6H5P)Mo_6^{2-} and (C6H5P)Mo_7^{4-} species found in a previous equilibrium study of the H+–MoO_4^{2-}–(C6H5P)O_3^{2-} system.

    Notes: Abstract. The BAT2 gene lies within the class III region of the major histocompatibility complex. We investigated the frequency of the BAT2 microsatellite alleles (BAT2) in 74 young-onset insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) patients, 51 adult-onset IDDM patients, and 85 normal control subjects, and assessed the associations among these BAT2 alleles, TNFa microsatellite alleles (TNFa), and HLA-DRB1 alleles. The frequency of the BAT2.9 allele was significantly increased in the young-onset IDDM patients (12.8 vs 4.1%, Pc=0.04896), whereas the frequency of BAT2.12 allele was significantly decreased in young-onset IDDM patients (0.0 vs 11.8%, Pc=0.00002) compared with control subjects. The BAT2.9 allele was strongly associated with TNFa9 in the young-onset IDDM patients, although no association was found between the BAT2.9 and HLA-DRB1 alleles. The BAT2.12 allele was strongly associated with TNFa13, and with DRB1*1502 in control subjects. These results suggest that the BAT2 microsatellite polymorphism is associated with the age-at-onset of IDDM and possibly with the inflammatory process of pancreatic β-cell destruction during the development of IDDM. However, this association is not independent of TNFa polymorphisms.

    Notes: Abstract Jasmonic acid (JA) and its methyl ester (JA-Me) promoted the abscission of bean petiole expiants in the dark and light, and the activity of these compounds was almost same. JA and JA-Me did not enhance ethylene production in bean petiole expiants in the light, indicating that the abscission-promoting effects of these compounds are not the result of ethylene. Cells in the petiole adjacent to the abscission zone expanded during abscission but not in the pulvinus, and JA-Me promoted cell expansion in the petiole and the pulvinus. JA-Me had no effect on the total amounts of pectic and hemicellulosic polysaccharides in 2-mm segments of the abscission region, which included 1 mm of pulvinus and 1 mm of petiole from the abscission zone. On the other hand, the total amounts of cellulosic polysaccharides in this region were reduced significantly by the addition of JA-Me in the light. JA-Me had no effect on the neutral sugar composition of hemicellulosic polysaccharides during abscission. The decrease in the endogenous levels of UDP-sugars in the petiole adjacent to the abscission zone was accelerated during abscission by the addition of JA-Me in the light. Cellulase activities of pulvinus and petiole in 10-day-old seedlings were enhanced by the addition of JA. These results suggest that the promoting effect of JA or JA-Me on the abscission of bean petiole explants is due to the change of sugar metabolism in the abscission zone, in which the increase in cellulase activity involves the degradation of cell wall polysaccharides. Jasmonic acid (JA) and its methyl ester (JA-Me) are considered to be putative plant hormones for a number of reasons, including their wide occurrence in the plant kingdom, biologic, activities in multiple aspects at low concentrations, and their interaction with other plant hormones (for reviews see Parthier 1991, Hamberg and Gardner 1992, Sembdner and Parthier 1993, Ueda et al. 1994a). We have already reported that JA and JA-Me and C18-unsaturated fatty acids, which are considered to be the substrates of the biosynthesis of jasmonates, are powerful senescence-promoting substances (Ueda et al. 1982b, 1991a). Senescence symptoms induced by these compounds are identical to those of natural senescence. Recently we have also found that JA inhibited indole-3-acetic acid (IAA)-induced elongation of oat (Avena sativa L. cv. Victory) coleoptile segments by inhibiting the synthesis of cell wall polysaccharides (Ueda et al. 1994b, 1995). These facts led us to study the mode of actions of JA and JA-Me on promoting abscission, which is considered the last dramatic phenomenon of senescence. In this paper we report that JA and JA-Me promote abscission in bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Masterpiece) petiole expiants and that the changes in the metabolism of cell wall polysaccharides in the petiole and the pulvinus adjacent to the abscission zone are involved in the promotive effects of these compounds.

    Notes: Abstract The effective thermal conductivity of dispersed composites with a hot-melt-adhesive matrix, measured using the steady-state method, is compared with the apparent thermal conductivity calculated from the average heat capacity and from the thermal diffusivity measured by the laser-flash method. The transient effect has been observed obviously at higher volume percentages for various dispersed particle sizes and ratios of the thermal conductivity values of dispersed and continuous phases. All of the experimental results are compared with those calculated by existing models and by the finite element method (FEM). An attempt has been made to show how the criterion for the homogeneity of dispersed composites under transient conditions is affected by the percentages of dispersed phase, dispersed particle size, and ratio of the thermal conductivity values of dispersed and continuous phases.
