Notes: Abstract —Borehole seismograms from local earthquakes in the aftershock region of the 1984 western Nagano Prefecture, Japan earthquake were analyzed to measure the frequency-dependent characteristics of P- and S-wave attenuation in the upper crust. The records from a three-component velocity seismometer at the depth of 145m exhibit high S/N-ratio in a wide frequency range up to 100 Hz. Extended coda normalization methods were applied to bandpass-filtered seismograms of frequencies from 25 to 102 Hz. For the attenuation of high-frequency P and S waves, our measurements show Q P -1≃ 0.052ƒ-0.66 and Q S -1≃ 0.0034ƒ-0.12 respectively. The frequency dependence of the quality factor of S waves is very weak as compared with that of P waves. The ratio of Q P -1/Q S -1 is larger than unity in the entire analyzed frequency range.

Notes: Summary A study was undertaken to investigate the correlation between histological invasiveness and proliferating potential and clinical recurrence in meningioma. In 39 meningiomas, the histological findings at the tumour-brain interface zone were classified into 3 types, consisting of 29 cases of non-invasion (NON), 7 cases of nodular invasion (NOD), and 3 cases of intermingled invasion (INT). Proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and argyrophilic nucleolar organizer region (AgNOR) indices were studied. PCNA indices (mean±standard error) of NON, NOD, and INT were 1.7±0.1%, 5.2±0.5%, and 7.5±0.7%, respectively, and the AgNOR indices (dot number/nucleus) were 1.50±0.03, 2.00±0.04, and 2.22±0.07, respectively. Significant differences were found among the three types in both parameters. Clinically, tumour recurrence was observed in 1/29 NON, 4/7 NOD, and 2/2 INT cases, indicating a higher incidence of recurrence in invasive meningiomas (NOD plus INT). Four of 32 patients who underwent gross total removal of the tumours showed recurrence, and all of these four tumours were invasive meningiomas. The results of the present study showed that tumour invasiveness as measured by PCNA + AgNOR indices correlated well with high proliferative potential and clinical recurrence.

Notes: Summary  Primary intracranial malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is very rare, and not much is known about its clinical features. The authors report a case of left temporal leptomeningeal MFH, with consequent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dissemination and pulmonary metastasis. The clinical features of this case and the therapeutic prognosis of 17 cases reported previously in the literature were reviewed.

Notes: Summary A study was conducted to investigate the role of serum protein exudation in the aetiology of chronic subdural haematoma (SDH). Scintigraphy after intravenous injection of 99mTc-labelled human serum albumin (HSA) was performed in three patients with chronic SDH and a patient with subdural effusion. In nother 60 haematomas, the amounts of total protein and albumin as indices of serum exudation were measured, and then compared among low-density, iso-density and high-density haematomas. Accumulation of 99mTc-HSA in the haematoma cavity was seen 6 h after isotope injection and became more evident at 24 h. However, the protein concentrations and albumin ratios in the haematomas exhibited a reciprocal relationship, suggesting that not all the protein in the haematomas was derived from serum exudation. The higher the total protein concentration in the haematoma became, the higher the haematoma density which was observed on CT. The albumin concentration in low-density haematomas was lower than that in iso-density and high-density haematomas, whereas no significant difference was seen between the latter two haematoma types. These results provide morphological evidence for serum protein exudation into the haematoma cavity, and therefore it is possible that serum protein exudation plays a role in the progression of chronic SDH and is related to changes in haematoma density on CT.

Notes: For Tb-Fe-Co(MO)/Al bilayered films, dependence of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy constant Ku⊥ on MO layer thickness tMO of 3–300 nm and Al layer thickness tAl of 5 and 100 nm has been investigated. For either tAl, easy magnetization direction was normal to film plane at tMO above 4 nm. Ku⊥ of films with tAl of 5 nm increased drastically with increasing tMO for tMO〈10 nm and then assumed a constant value of 4×106 erg/cm3 which is two times larger than that with tAl of 100 nm. This difference in Ku⊥ between them may be attributed to stress induced anisotropy. Estimation of rotational hysteresis loss Wr and its integral R suggests that the mechanism of magnetization reversal may be attributed to incoherent curling mode. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: 1. To clarify the pathogenesis of cardiac disorders in SHRSP which showed severe cardiac hypertrophy and myocardial degeneration in the hypertensive stage, restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP) of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), and morphological and functional changes of mitochondria were examined.2. Morphologically, the mitochondrial size showed a wider range of distribution in SHRSP both at prehypertensive and hypertensive stage compared to those in age-matched WKY.3. Isocitrate dehydrogenase (ICDH) activity, but not super-oxide dismutase (SOD) activity, was higher in the young SHRSP, whereas both enzyme activities were lower in the mature SHRSP than in the age-matched WKY.4. RFLP analysis by electrophoresis revealed that the loss of two restriction sites for Rsa I in the myocardial mtDNA from the SHRSP, but not in that from the WKY.5. These findings suggest that the structural changes of mtDNA could be related, at least partly, to morphological and functional changes of mitochondria in the SHRSP myocardium.

Notes: Beam position monitors (BPMs) for the SPring-8 synchrotron have already been designed and manufactured. Each BPM pickup has four button-type electrodes, and the output signals from the electrodes are switched by fast PIN-diode and are measured by signal detection systems. Eighty BPMs and four detection systems are placed around the synchrotron. Calibration of beam position of the 80 BPMs was finished successfully. In this paper, we present the structure of the BPM pickup, the electronics of the signal detection system, and the calibration system. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Diamond films were successfully synthesized in both parallel-plate radio frequency (rf: 13.56 MHz) CH4 and CH3OH plasmas with injection of H and OH radicals generated in the remote microwave (2.45 GHz) H2/H2O plasma. Effects of H, OH, and CH3 radicals on the diamond film formation in the rf plasma reactor were investigated by the formation of diamond films employing radical injection technique and the measurement of density in the plasma. Under the condition of diamond film formation, CH3 density was measured by infrared diode laser absorption spectroscopy (IRLAS). The kinetics of CH3 in rf CH4 and CH3OH plasmas with injection of H and OH radicals were evaluated from the results of optical emission spectroscopy and lifetime of CH3 radicals estimated by IRLAS. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
