Notes: Abstract Ce3+-doped, inorganic-organic hybrid monoliths were prepared from Si(OCH3)4, CH3 Si(OCH3)3, CeCl3 and various functionalized silanes (FSs) such as amino- (APTM), glycidyloxy- (GPTM), trifluoro- (TFTM) and chloro-(CPTM) silanes at 60°C by the sol-gel process. The functional groups of silane coupling agents coordinated with Ce3+ ions in the inorganic-organic materials. Ce3+-doped materials were transparent under the preparation conditions of FS/Ce3+ ratio of 100 and 1.0 × 10−4 mol/cm3 of Ce3+ concentration. Optical properties such as absorption spectra, emission spectra and fluorescence quantum yield for the Ce3+-doped hybrid materials were strongly affected by the Ce3+ ion environment. Emission spectra were observed for the Ce3+-doped materials below 400 nm. The emission intensities of the materials prepared from TFTM, CPTM and without FS were approximately 100 times as much as those of materials prepared from APTM and GPTM. The fluorescence quantum yield was highest (11%) for the material prepared from TFTM hybrid materials.

Notes: Summary.  HIV-1 p17 antigen has been studied for its biological significance in vitro as well as its immunological roles in vivo. By immunological approach of antibody-binding to HIV-1 p17 antigens of several subtypes in combination with computerized analysis of those tertial structures, it became evident that, irrelevant of similarity of linear amino acid sequence of different HIV-1 subtypes, a few amino acid substitutions close to or distant from specified epitope(s) affected their tertial structure resulting in change in ability of its binding to selected antibody. ELISA employing two monoclonal antibodies, A144 and C415, could detect p17 of subtypes A and B, but not of subtypes C, D, and E. Since the epitope site corresponding to A144 has been reported to be important for biological activity of p17 of HIV-1, change in tertial structure around this epitope may explain some difference in biology of HIV-1, such as infectivity of subtypes B and E.

Description / Table of Contents: Résumé.
Notes: Summary. We describe a single level intervertebral approach to decompress two adjacent involved nerve roots in cases of cervical spondylosis. The operation was undertaken in 4 patients. We carried out discectomy, partial excision of the vertebral body with removal of the anteromedial part of the pedicles, removal of osteophytes and excision of the posterior longitudinal ligament, followed by an anterior interbody fusion. Fusion was achieved with the spine in normal lordosis and without complications. Pain and motor weakness was relieved in every case. This procedure can maintain movement at one additional disc level and has a better fusion rate than multilevel interbody fusion.

Notes: Abstract  We used graphical genotyping and linkage analyses with molecular markers to determine the chromosomal location of the rice stripe disease resistance gene, Stv-b i . The stripe resistance gene from the indica rice (Oryza sativa) cv ‘Modan’ was introgressed into several Japanese rice varieties. We found 4 RFLP markers in ‘Modan’, five susceptible parental rice varieties (‘Norin No. 8’, ‘Sachihikari’, ‘Kanto No. 98’, ‘Hokuriku No.103’ and ‘Koganebare’) and four resistant progeny varieties (‘St. No. 1’, ‘Aichi No. 6’, ‘Aoisora’ and ‘Asanohikari’). Graphical genotyping of the resistant progeny revealed a chromosomal segment ascribable to ‘Modan’ and associated with stripe resistance. The chromosomal segment from ‘Modan’ was located at 35.85 cM on chromosome 11. Linkage analysis using 120 F2 individuals from a cross between ‘Koshihikari’ (susceptible) and ‘Asanohikari’ (resistant) revealed another 8 RFLP markers in the same chromosome. We performed a bioassay for rice stripe resistance in F3 lines of the F2 individuals using infective small brown planthoppers and identified an 1.8-cM segment harboring the rice stripe disease resistance gene, Stv-b i , between XNpb220 and XNpb257/ XNpb254. Furthermore, Stv-b i was linked by 0.0 cM to a RFLP marker, ST10, which was developed on the basis of the results of RAPD analysis. These DNA markers near the Stv-b i locus may be useful in marker-assisted selection and map-based cloning of the Stv-b i gene.

Notes: Abstract Diffusion through a multilayered material is analysed by means of the Laplace transformation. An algorithm using a new method for numerical inversion of the Laplace transform is successfully developed for solving the diffusion equations. The procedure is applied to an analysis of hydrogen permeation through a simple mulilayered material related to electrochemical testing. The problem appears simple, but the exact analytical solution is difficult; the present technique makes it possible to solve this problem while retaining a part of the advantage of the analytical method. The results are compared with results obtained by the conventional analytical method, which is based on diffusion through a single layer. The applicability and limit of use of the conventional analytical method is also investigated.

Notes: Abstract In November 1994, the construction of a new superconducting muon channel of the RIKEN-RAL muon facility at ISIS of Rutherford Appleton Laboratory was completed. Subsequently, important features, such as the highest instantaneous intensity with a single-pulse structure and a high purity have been confirmed. Along with the installation of advanced µCF experimental equipment, including a high-purity D-T mixture target system with an in situ3He removal capability and a 4 T confinement magnet, an advanced µCF experiment, e.g. a precise X-ray measurement on µ-α sticking in dtµ-µCF will be realized. An account of the commissioning experiments, a plan for the earliest phase of the µCF experiment and possible future directions are reported.

Notes: Abstract Muon-catalyzed fusion was investigated in thin solid deuterium films to determine the experimental feasibility of slow µ− production by detection of dd fusion protons as well as slow µ− collection utilizing a large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer. The spatial distribution of the fusion reaction in the film was extracted, and an optimum thickness for slow µ− emission was deduced. Collected 10 keV µ− were also successfully detected. However, the dd fusion yield being insufficient, we were not able to distinguish slow µ− via µCF from degraded µ−.

Notes: Abstract We successfully observed clear K-series kaonic hydrogen X-rays for the first time taking advantage of two charged pions tagging technique and a gaseous hydrogen target. The strong-interaction energy shift and width of 1s state of K −p atom were determined to be ΔE 1s = -323 ± 63 (statistical) ± 11 (systematic) eV and Г1s = 407 ± 208 ± 100 eV. Our result means that the K −p strong interaction near threshold is repulsive and the long-standing kaonic hydrogen puzzle is solved.

Notes: Abstract This article reports the accumulation effect of the 3He originating from tritium β decay; 3He created in solid remains in it, while one in liquid diffuses and goes out to the vapor gas. We observed this effect through the neutron detection from muon catalyzed fusion phenomenon (μCF), and gave it qualitative understanding, by which the muon transfer rate from (dμ) and (tμ) to helium was derived.

Notes: Abstract At the RIKEN-RAL Muon Facility, μ- to α sticking K β X-rays were observed for the first time taking advantage of the pulsed beam structure. The precision of the present measurements was insufficient to distinguish between theoretical models, however the observed K β /K α X-ray intensity ratio tends to be smaller than most of these theoretical predictions.
