Notes: Abstract Cathepsin B (EC 3.4.22.1), a typical lysosomal cysteine proteinase was identified immunologically with anti-human cathepsin B antibody in inflammatory exudate, gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) of adult periodontitis patients. The sensitive enzyme immunoassay (EIA) system initially developed, was rarely influenced by the presence of endogenous, cysteine proteinase inhibitors, cystatin(s), indicating that it is possible to quantify the gross amount of cathepsin B including free enzyme forms and enzyme-inhibitor complex forms using this EIA system. The cathepsin B levels in, GCF as determined by EIA and the activity measured with Z-Arg-Arg-MCA showed positive and significant correlation with various clinical parameters. Immunoblotting analysis revealed that the molecular form was a 29 kDa mature enzyme. More than 95% of Z-Arg-Arg-MCA hydrolytic activity in each GCF sample was inhibited by CA-074, specific inhibitor of cathepsin B. These results strongly suggested that the gross amount of cathepsin B in GCF as well as its activity level is closely associated with the severity of the disease and that cathepsins B play an important role in the pathogenesis of periodontitis.

Notes: Abstract. Normal variants of the venous system are relatively common and rarely cause severe symptoms. We report the case of a 5-month-old baby who displayed cyanotic color and swelling of arms whenever she was carried on the mother's back with a special band “Obui-himo”. It was demonstrated by venography that the symptoms were caused by the absence of a cephalic vein and compression of axillary veins with the Obui-himo. In any country with a custom similar to the Obui-himo, these symptoms, if clinically encountered, are an indication that venography should be performed.

Notes: Nanometer-scale mounds were fabricated by applying voltage pulses between a substrate and an atomic force microscope cantilever coated with magnetic material. Mounds were formed on both insulator and conducting substrates. Magnetic force microscopy (MFM) observations of the fabricated mounds were performed, and the contrast was turned over by reversing the magnetization of the tip, which is convincing proof that the mounds are magnetic. The MFM images also suggest that the mounds are perpendicularly magnetized. These results demonstrate that scanning probe microscope based nanofabrication is a promising method to fabricate nanoscale magnetic dots on any kind of substrates. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Coupling of soft magnetic films to antiferromagnetic substrates was studied by spin-polarized secondary electron microscopy. Permalloy (Ni80Fe20 alloy) films were deposited on antiferromagnetic NiO(111) single-crystal substrates. A domain structure consisting of fine grains (∼50 μm) was characteristic of the NiFe film deposited without applying magnetic field. The domain image and its response to applied field suggested existance of local easy axis and local unidirectional anisotropy. When macroscopic unidirectional anisotropy was introduced to the NiFe film by depositing under an applied dc magnetic field, many of the fine grains disappeared and the film showed large domains (∼1 mm). In the large domains, small elongated reversed domains (∼20 μm×60 μm) aligned parallel to each other implying local easy axis of magnetization. The type of domain behavior described above was not observed in a NiFe film on MgO(111) substrate that had the same crystal structure as NiO but no magnetic ordering. An x-ray analysis revealed that the local easy axes observed in NiFe/NiO specimens coincided with the [112¯] of the NiO crystal lying in the (111) substrate plane, which supported coupling of the NiFe film with the single-crystal substrate. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) sometimes occurs in term infants with congenital heart disease. This article reports a rare case of a term infant with coarctation of the aorta complex who developed NEC on the 8th day after birth. Spontaneous closure of the ductus arteriosus in the 1st week of life may cause intestinal ischemia and hypoxia with resultant NEC.

Notes: Abstract This paper reports a premature infant with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) who underwent an abdominal wall plasty to enlarge the abdominal cavity, one of twin infants born at 32 weeks weighing 1,255 g. After stabilization, the herniated viscera were reduced from the pleural cavity and the abdominal wall muscle and skin layers were replaced by a Gore-tex patch without closure of the diaphragmatic defect. Respiratory and circulatory conditions were stable during the perioperative period. Postoperatively, a roentogenogram showed expansion of the lung. However, his condition deteriorated 24 h after surgery, triggered by intratracheal suction, and he died on the 4th day of life despite the use of high-frequency oscillation, catecholamines, and vasodilators. Postmortem examination showed severely hypoplastic lungs. Abdominal wall plasty may be a less invasive initial procedure, however, further studies, such as comparison with the standard method or conservative management, are needed using a large clinical group or animal models to justify the usefulness of this procedure.

Notes: In cubic polycrystals, combinations of coincidence orientation relationships at a triple junction of grains A, B and C can be obtained by using the equation ΣCA = ΣABΣBC/d2, where d is a common divisor of ΣAB and ΣBC. This paper describes the derivation of this equation and shows several models of polycrystals composed of specially selected coincidence boundaries using the above equation.

Notes: Abstract This article describes a prenatal ultrasonographic finding of an infarcted intestinal volvulus. Ultrasonography showed polyhydramnios, multiple dilated intestinal loops, increased transverse abdominal area, and ascites. After cesarean section due to premature rupture of membranes and fetal distress, derotation of the infarcted volvulus caused postoperative thrombocytopenia, hyperkalemia, and acidosis and a subsequent resection was required. A high output of intestinal juice from the jejunostomy caused severe hypovolemia and electrolyte imbalance with resultant death. Increased transverse abdominal area caused by marked intestinal dilatation, ascites, fetal distress, and hydrops fetalis may suggest an infarcted intestinal volvulus.
