Notes: Abstract The Y chromosome (Yaa gene) from autoimmune BXSB mice has been shown to be responsible for the acceleration of autoimmune symptoms when transferred to MRL/lpr mice. We examined the pathological, serological and immunological characteristics of MRL/lpr.Yaa mice and the suppressive effect of cyclophosphamide (CP) on the mice. MRL/lpr.Yaa mice spontaneously developed a massive lymphadenopathy characterized by hypergammaglobulinemia, the presence of several autoantibodies, and autoimmune disease. In MRL/lpr.Yaa mice, IL-2, IL-4 and IL-5 production in concanavalin A (Con A)-stimulated splenocytes were about 10-fold lower than in BALB/c mice at 5 weeks of age.The concentrations of these lymphokines remained low until the mice were 16 weeks of age. The production of IFN-γ and IL-6 in 16 week old MRL/lpr.Yaa mice was about 4- and 2-fold lower, respectively, though these levels were similar in both strains at 8 weeks of age. It was found that this dysregulation of T cell function was almost identical to that in MRL/lpr mice. Administration of CP to MRL/lpr.Yaa mice ameliorated nephritis, and suppressed production of autoantibodies and the accumulation of abnormal T cells. CP also significantly elevated the production of lymphokines. These findings suggest that an abnormality of T cell function may contribute to the autoimmune pathogenesis of MRL/lpr.Yaa mice and that CP probably ameliorates autoimmune disease by improving the T cell functions.

Notes: We report the observation of spin relaxation of excitons in zero-dimensional semiconductor nanostructures. The spin relaxation is measured in InGaAs quantum disks by using a polarization dependent time-resolved photoluminescence method. The spin relaxation time in a zero-dimensional quantum disk is as long as 0.9 ns at 4 K, which is almost twice as long as the radiative recombination lifetime and is considerably longer than that in quantum wells. The temperature dependence of the spin relaxation time suggests the importance of exciton–acoustic phonon interaction. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract We have previously reported that strong desiccation tolerance in carrot somatic embryos can be achieved by treatment with abscisic acid (ABA). In this study, we examined the possibility of long-term preservation of ABA-treated and desiccated somatic embryos. Somatic embryos that had been desiccated after treatment with ABA survived for at least 169 weeks at –25 °C. By contrast, somatic embryos that had not been desiccated after treatment with ABA survived for at least 24 weeks at +5 °C but died at –25 °C.

Notes: Abstract A procedure for the non-radioactive detection of random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) was developed and designated as digoxigenin (DIG)-based RAPD. Using this procedure, we analyzed somaclonal variation in cultured cells of rice. Somaclonal variation was found to increase with culture age. More than 50 polymorphic fragments were identified with the four primers tested. Random sequencing of 10 clones generated one intron, one 5′-noncoding, and eight non-redundant expressed sequences. A database search for homology showed that the eight exon sequences displayed a significant similarity to sequences already stored in EMBL, GenBank and DDBJ. The sources of the known genes ranged from microorganism to human, including three rice genes. The results showed that somaclonal variation might have occurred in transfer RNA, ribosomal protein, and other genes during cell culture.

Notes: Abstract Carrot somatic embryogenesis was strongly inhibited in high-cell-density cultures. This inhibition was not caused by depletion of nutrients or physical damage but by factor(s) released into the culture medium from cells during culture. A conditioned medium prepared by eliminating cells after high-cell-density culture inhibited somatic embryogenesis. The degree of inhibition increased with the amount of conditioned medium. A dialysis experiment revealed that the molecular weight of the inhibiting factor(s) was below 3,500. We also found that the conditioned medium contained a high-molecular-weight factor(s), which stimulated somatic embryogenesis.

Notes: Abstract A full-length cDNA of the gene for phytochrome A from Arabidopsis thaliana was fused with the 35S promoter of cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV35S-PHYA) and introduced into horseradish (Armoracia rusticana Gaert., Mey. et Scherb.) hairy roots. The phytochrome level in hairy roots transformed with CaMV35SPHYA was about three times greater than that in normal hairy roots and the rate of light-induced formation of adventitious shoots was also higher in the hairy roots transformed with CaMV35SPHYA. These results indicate that the light-induced formation of adventitious shoots on horseradish hairy roots is closely related to the phytochrome level.

Notes: Abstract Carrot embryogenic callus (EC) forms larger and tighter clusters of cells than does non-embryogenic callus (NC). Morphological and histochemical analyses of EC and NC were made using the electron microscope. The entire cell wall in NC was strongly stained by ruthenium red, which reacts primarily with carboxyl groups of acidic sugars. By contrast, in EC, strong staining by ruthenium red of the entire cell wall, of amorphous structures on the surface of EC and of secretory vesicles was observed only after treatment with NaOH. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the presence of amorphous structures on the entire surface of EC but not of NC. These results suggest the abundance of non-methylesterified pectins and the presence of methylesterified and peripherally located pectins in the cell walls of NC and EC, respectively, as well as the absence, in carrot cultured cells, of any correlation between the calcium bridges of pectins and intercellular attachment.

Notes: Abstract. Complex eigenphases and mixing parameters for elastic n-d scattering above the breakup threshold are calculated. Faddeev equations are solved precisely using the Bonn-B NN potential. We point out defects in existing N-d phase-shift analyses. Peculiar energy variations in the mixing parameter η3/2− are shown to have no effect on observables and are simply an artifact of the S-matrix parametrization. It is shown, that the n-d analyzing power A y depends most sensitively on the three eigenphases δ1/2 3/2/1, δ2/3 3/2/1, and δ5/2 3/2/1, which again are predominantly generated by the 3 P j NN force components. Therefore a determination of those eigenphases from experimental data would help to constrain the 3 P j NN forces.

Notes: Abstract. The proton-deuteron breakup cross sections and analyzing powers A y for three kinematically complete configurations in a quasi-free-scattering geometry have been measured at E lab P = 65 MeV. The data are compared with predictions of rigorous Faddeev calculations using the Argonne AV14, Bonn-B, Nijmegen-78, and Paris potentials. A satisfactory agreement between theory and experimental data, both for cross sections and analyzing powers, has been found.

Notes: Abstract. We demonstrate that the partial-wave decomposition of three-nucleon forces used up to now in momentum space has to be necessarily unstable for high partial waves. This does not affect the applications performed up to now, which were restricted to low partial waves. We present a new way to perform the partial-wave decomposition free of that defect. This is exemplified for the most common two-pion-exchange Tucson-Melbourne three-nucleon force. For the lower partial waves the results of the old method are reproduced.
