Notes: Conclusion Color Doppler US is a valuable diagnostic tool in evaluating or predicting prognosis of fulminant hepatic failure as it is simple and provides more accurate information about portal circulation than the other existing modalities.

Notes: Summary  The incidence of high cervical disc lesions is extremely rare, and the mechanism of their development is unclear. We report these three cases, and discuss the possible mechanisms. We also describe surgical strategies for these lesions.  The first and second cases were an 82-year-old male and an 84-year-old male with retro-odontoid disc hernia. The third was an 83-year-old female with a herniated disc at C2/C3. To investigate Aetiological mechanisms of these lesions, we examined the findings on cervical images in extension and flexion, and compared the results in a younger than 80-year-old group and an older than 80-year-old group.  The patients underwent surgery via a posterolateral intradural approach. Wide laminectomy and incision of the dentate ligaments enabled access to the ventral space of the upper cervical spinal canal and sufficient decompression. All patients became ambulatory postoperatively without special fixation of the cervical spine. In the younger group, the level mostly loaded during cervical movement was C5/6, however, the levels in the older group were C2/3 and C3/4.  In elderly patients, less mobilization of the middle and/or lower cervical spine due to spondylotic change causes overloading at higher levels resulting in high cervical disc lesions. Retro-odontoid disc lesions can be caused by a herniated disc at C2/C3, which migrates upward. Regarding surgical strategy, the posterolateral intradural approach is less invasive and more advantageous for these lesions.

Notes: Summary In order to study how immune-inflammatory responses are involved in the pathogenesis of cerebral vasospasm after subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH), the kinetics of expression of the intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1), a ligand for the leucocyte adhesion receptor, were studied on the cerebral arteries following SAH in rats. The SAH was induced by intracisternal injection of arterial blood. The rats were sacrificed at specified times: immediately after induction of SAH to seven days after SAH. Cryostat sections of the basilar artery (BA) were prepared and incubated with anti-rat ICAM-1 antibody. Morphometric analysis of the BA revealed a significant narrowing of the luminal diameter on Day 2 following SAH. While in the non-treated normal animals, no nor only weak expression of ICAM-1 was observed on the endothelial layer of the BA, there was greater expression of ICAM-1 on the endothelial layer of the BA in SAH rats, and the expression was observed also in the medial layer of the artery from Day 2 to Day 5 following SAH. The present results indicate that SAH really causes responses in the cellular immunity not only in the endothelial layer, but also in the medial layer of the artery as a target of immune damage, which is presumed to be one of the important steps in the development of cerebral vasospasm.

Notes: Abstract We report a rare case of extensive extradural teratoma successfully treated by multi-stage laminotomy and thoracotomy. A 34-day-old, dyspneic infant had a large posterior mediastinal mass identified on a chest X-ray radiograph. Imaging studies disclosed that the mass originated from the extradural space at the level of the lower thoracic spine, extending cephalad to C4 and caudad to L4 and severely compressing the spinal cord anteriorly, causing paraplegia. The tumor expanded bilaterally through the intraspinal foramina, coalescing to form a huge mediastinal mass. The upper half of the teratoma was removed utilizing a laminotomy from T3 through T9; 2 months later the lower half was excised via a laminotomy from T11 to L3. An additional procedure was required to resect recurrent tumor through a laminotomy from T8 to T12. The reconstructed vertebral arches were well-preserved in shape, with an almost normal spinal canal.

Notes: Summary The diastereofacial selective “imine-ene” reactions withα-imino esters, prepared from (−)-8-phenylmenthyl glyoxylate, are shown to provide an efficient entry to the asymmetric synthesis ofα-amino acids. The feasibility study of the asymmetric catalysis is also reported on the enantiofacial selective ene reactions with prochiralα-imino esters.

Notes: Abstract We report a 40-year-old woman, who initially developed cerebellar symptoms, with multiple hemorrhagic brain metastases from a papillary thyroid cancer. Intracranial masses gave heterogeneous high signal on T 1-weighted and T 2-weighted images, hemosiderin rims on the latter. Some of the tumors showed contrast enhancement. Metastatic thyroid cancer is a consideration in a patient with multiple hemorrhagic masses.

Notes: Abstract The effects of cold treatment on the cortical microtubules (MTs) of Chaetomorpha moniligera Kjellman were investigated by immunofluorescence microscopy. Cortical MTs in Chaetomorpha thallus are arranged longitudinally. In this study, 70–75% of MTs disassembled within 4 h on ice while the others remained stable under these conditions. Reticulate background immunofluorescence, assumed to indicate the presence of a tubulin monomer, was distributed about the stable MTs. Immunofluorescence was prominent in only 50% of the cells. Tubulin polymerization was noted where the background and MT immunofluorescence was strong. New MTs grew transversely as single strings or clusters from the sides of MTs after cold treatment for 4 h and elongated with time to take on a reticulate form at 24 h. The significance of this tubulin polymerization under cold treatment is discussed.

Notes: Abstract The IC50 values of the antidepressants amoxapine, mianserin, desipramine, clomipramine and imipramine, and the antipsychotics spiroperidol, chlorpromazine, levomepromazine and haloperidol for3H-ketanserin binding, 5HT-induced intracellular Ca2+ increase, 5HT-induced shape change and3H-paroxetine binding in human plateletes were measured and the correlations of each parameter were examined. Results were as follows. Both the antidepressants and the antipsychotics had inhibitory effects on3H-ketanserin binding, 5HT-induced intracellular Ca2+ increase and 5HT-induced shape change and there were significant positive correlations between the IC50 values of these three parameters. On the other hand, there were no significant correlations between the IC50 values in3H-paroxetine binding and those in the other three parameters. These results suggest that3H-ketanserin binding, 5HT-induced intracellular Ca2+ increase and 5HT-induced shape change are useful and reliable tools for the assessment of the effects of the antidepressants and the antipsychotics on the 5HT2 receptor-mediated signal transducing system in human platelets.
