Notes: Fingerprint whorl patterns are formed during fetal life. In a group of 180 term infants, those with more fingerprint whorls tended to have a small abdominal circumference (P= 0.09) and high ratio of head to abdominal circumference (P= 0.008). These associations were independent of the relation between the whorl counts of the mothers and their infants. We also found an independent correlation between the babies’ whorl count and the combination of increasing subscapular (P= 0.03) and decreasing triceps (P= 0.02) skinfold thicknesses of the mothers. Whorl patterns are associated with adult hypertension; maternal nutritional status may influence their common origin during fetal development.

Notes: A method has been developed for investigating the chemical reactions of organic compounds under the dynamic shock loading conditions of detonation. Sealed capsules are placed along the axis of a cylindrical charge which is initiated at one end. As the detonation wave progresses along the charge, a major part of the sample inside each capsule is subjected to a well-balanced annular compression with peak pressure approximately equal to the Chapman–Jouguet pressure of the explosive used. The geometry of the system ensures both minimal structural deformation and low residual velocity of the capsules; consequently high survival rates have been obtained. The temperature and pressure distribution within the sample space has been calculated as a function of time by a computer simulation using MAGI, a three-dimensional Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics code. The temperature has also been measured experimentally with a variety of organic reactions known to be insensitive to pressure, whose Arrhenius parameters are obtained from the literature and measurements in our laboratory. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Nathan PJ, Maguire KP, Burrows GD, Norman T.R. The effect of atenolol, a β1-adrenergic antagonist, on nocturnal plasma melatonin secretion: Evidence for a dose-response relationship in humans. J. Pineal Res. 1997; 23:131–135. © Munksgaard, Copenhagen〈section xml:id="abs1-1"〉〈title type="main"〉AbstractPineal β1-adrenergic receptors are involved in the regulation of melatonin secretion. The involvement of β1adrenergic receptors has been demonstrated by the ability of acute administration ofβ-antagonists to suppress the nocturnal rise of circulating melatonin and its urinary metabolite 6-sulphatoxymelatonin (aMT6s). The present study was undertaken to examine the relationship between increasing doses of atenolol and nocturnal plasma melatonin concentrations. Six healthy subjects participated in the study for a period of 5 weeks. Subjects were administered placebo, 12.5, 25, 37.5, and 50 mg doses of atenolol in a randomized single blind design. Each dose was separated by a 1 week washout period. Blood samples were collected at regular intervals from 19.00 hr to 06.00 hr. Repeated measures analysis of variance showed a dose-dependent decrease in plasma melatonin concentrations (P 〈 0.01). A Student Newman-Keuls post hoc test indicated significant differences between placebo and all doses of atenolol (P 〈 0.05). The results demonstrate a dose-dependent relationship between β1-receptor blockade and suppression of nocturnal plasma melatonin in humans.

Notes: Abstract Objective: Anticonvulsant drugs are known inducers of cytochrome P450 liver enzymes and it has been suggested that this induction increases susceptibility to paracetamol-induced hepatotoxicity. Methods: We measured the percentage urinary recovery of paracetamol and its metabolites after a dose of 20 mg kg−1, and the excretion of 6ß-hydroxycortisol as a ratio to urinary free cortisol(6ßOHF/F) in Chinese epileptic patients maintained on long term therapy with carbamazepine (n = 6) or phenytoin (n = 6). Results: Compared to the healthy controls (n = 20), patients on phenytoin had significantly lower recoveries of mercapturic acid, cysteine and sulphate metabolites, but a higher recovery of glucuronide metabolites of paracetamol. The recoveries of paracetamol metabolites in patients on carbamazepine were not different from controls. In contrast, the 6ßOHF/F was signi ficantly higher in patients on carbamazepine (3-fold) or phenytoin (2-fold) compared to controls. Healthy control Chinese subjects metabolised paracetamol in a similar way to that reported in Caucasians, indicating that the risk for hepatotoxicity would be the same. Our findings in a group of Chinese patients on phenytoin were also similar to those previously reported in Caucasians on this drug. The apparent differences in the pattern of isoenzyme induction between the groups on phenytoin and carbamazepine require verification in larger studies. The data do not suggest an increased risk of paracetamol-induced hepatotoxicity in Chinese patients on anticonvulsants.

Notes: Abstract We present a patient with neurocysticercosis with spinal subarachnoid spread who presented with lower back pain and progressive numbness and weakness of the left leg. MRI of the spine simulated metastasis. MRI of the brain demonstrated a “bunch of grapes” appearance in the basal cisterns, characteristic of cysticercosis.

Notes: The decomposition products of emulsion explosives and of other composite explosives containing ammonium nitrate, such as ANFO, were investigated. The compounds were thermolyzed at high temperature and pressure on the microsecond and millisecond time scales by adiabatic gas compression. It was found that the first step in emulsion decomposition is pyrolysis of the oil to form reactive intermediates like Hċ and CH3ċ. These reactive species are oxidized by the decomposition products of ammonium nitrate in a later sequence of reaction steps.
