Notes: Freeze-thawing studies at different concentrations, using an actomyosin solution (extracted from Alaska pollock), revealed that an 8% (w/v) solution of oligosaccharides mixture (HBOS) was most effective in cryoprotection. During frozen storage (-18°C), HBOS showed cryoprotective effects similar to sucrose and a sucrose+sorbitol mixture (1:1). Surimi gel prepared with HBOS showed higher hardness and more dense microstructure than others, although water holding capacity was slightly lower than the gel with sucrose+sorbitol. HBOS containing gel showed lower whiteness than sucrose but no difference with sucrose+sorbitol. HBOS appeared to have good potential as a non-sweet cryoprotectant of fish protein.

Notes: Abstract In this study, porosity and graphitizability of coal tar pitch with the treatment pressure were investigated. 4-directional carbon/carbon composites (4D C/C) were made from the matrix precursor of coal tar pitch through the process of impregnation and carbonization. Then the effects of applied pressure during the densification on the composites were observed. The matrix pitch which had 600 bar applied during the carbonization process had one and a half times less pore area ratio than that treated at 1 bar. When the pitch was heat treated up to 2300°C after the high pressure carbonization, the degree of graphitization was improved on a small scale and the crystal size tended to reduce. As the applied pressures to 4D C/C composites increased from 1 to 600 bar, the densification ratio was greatly improved. In the pore size distribution of the 4D C/C composites, the macropore portion was decreased while the mesopore portion increased, when high pressures were applied.

Notes: Abstract. Background: To establish the value of saline-filled appendiceal ultrasonography in the the diagnosis of clinically equivocal acute appendicitis. Methods: Saline-filled ultrasonography was performed in 43 patients with an equivocal clinical diagnosis of acute appendicitis. Results: Sonography diagnosed 31 of 32 patients without acute appendicitis (97%). A normal appendix was visualized in 15 patients (47%), and we identified a normal appendix in 15 of 22 patients (68%) in whom the colon was cleansed with Golytely®. Sonography diagnosed 10 of 11 patients with acute appendicitis (91%). In three of 10 patients, the findings corresponded to sonographic pitfalls. Conclusion: Saline-filled appendiceal ultrasonography enables the detection of a normal appendix and may overcome sonographic pitfalls in acute appendicitis.

Notes: Abstract The endogenous rhythm of oxygen consumption in juvenile spotted sea bass (Lateolabrax sp.) was measured to test the effects of sudden changes in salinity on the metabolic activity. Mean oxygen consumption rates of this euryhaline fish decreased by 13.5 to 16.0% and 25.3 to 36.4% when they were transferred from 31.5 to 15‰ seawater and to fresh water (0‰), respectively. The maximum rate of oxygen consumption was observed between 18:00 and 19:00 hrs local time, 1 to 2 h before sunset, even though they were kept in constant darkness. The peaks of oxygen consumption occurred in 23.2- and 23.3-h intervals, which correspond with a circadian rhythm, as revealed by maximum entropy spectral analysis. A markedly weakened rhythm in oxygen consumption occurred from 8 to 10 d after onset of the experiments. This study indicates that spotted sea bass can withstand sudden drops in salinity from 31.5‰ to fresh water, and yet maintain a regular though somewhat dampened endogenous rhythm of oxygen consumption.

Notes: Abstract. To examine the mechanism(s) and pathways of gap junction formation and removal a novel and reversible inhibitor of protein secretion, ilimaquinone (IQ), was employed. IQ has been reported to cause the vesiculation of Golgi membranes, block protein transport at the cis-Golgi and depolymerize cytoplasmic microtubules. Connexin43 (Cx43) immunolabeling and dye microinjection experiments revealed that gap junction plaques were lost and intercellular communication was inhibited following IQ treatment for 1 hr in BICR-M1Rk rat mammary tumor cells and for 2 hr in normal rat kidney (NRK) cells. Gap junction plaques and intercellular communication recovered within 2 hr when IQ was removed. IQ, however, did not affect the distribution of zonula occludens-1, a protein associated with tight junctions. Western blot analysis revealed that the IQ-induced loss of gap junction plaques was accompanied by a limited reduction in the highly phosphorylated form of Cx43, previously shown to be correlated with gap junction plaques. The presence of IQ inhibited the formation of new gap junction plaques in BICR-M1Rk cells under conditions where preexisting gap junctions were downregulated by brefeldin A treatment. Treatment of BICR-M1Rk and NRK cells with other microtubule depolymerization agents did not inhibit plaque formation or promote rapid gap junction removal. These findings suggest that IQ disrupts intercellular communication by inhibiting the events that are involved in plaque formation and/or retention at the cell surface independent of its effects on microtubules. Our results also suggest that additional factors other than phosphorylation are necessary for Cx43 assembly into gap junction plaques.

Notes: Abstract A new temperature compensation technique for hot-wire anemometer is proposed in this article. In contrast to the available compensation techniques, a photoconductive cell is introduced here as a variable resistor in the bridge. The major advantage of adopting an active component such as photoconductive cell is that temperature compensation can be achieved by using any kind of temperature sensors, once the output of temperature sensor is given as a voltage. Validation experiments using a photoconductive cell with a thermocouple-thermometer are conducted in the temperature range from 30 to 50 °C and the velocity ranges from 8 to 18 m/s.

Notes: Abstract. The aim of our study was to evaluate radiologic findings of the tuberculosis involving breast. We evaluated the radiologic features of 17 patients (18 lesions) with tuberculous disease involving the breast. The radiologic examinations, including mammography (16 patients), ultrasonography (12 patients), and Gd-DTPA-enhanced dynamic MRI (6 patients), were analyzed. Mammographic findings included mass (12 of 17 lesions), calcification (3 of 17 lesions), asymmetric density with spiculated margin (5 of 17 lesions), and axillary lymph node enlargement (8 of 17 lesions). On ultrasonography, a smooth bordered mass (7 of 13 lesions) with thin boundary (7 of 13 lesions) and heterogeneous, intermediate internal echoes (9 of 13 lesions) were most commonly demonstrated. On Gd-DTPA-enhanced dynamic MRI, 3 lesions showed significant enhancement at the first minute after injection (3 of 7 lesions). The maximun enhancing amount was greater than 500 normalized units, and the enhancing pattern was smooth or irregular ring appearance. Breast involvement with tuberculosis is rare but should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a woman living in an endemic area or when extramammary foci of tuberculosis are present. A multimodality imaging approach with clinical evaluation will help to establish the diagnosis of tuberculosis involving breast.

Notes: Abstract. A case of parosteal lipoma of the femur combined with hyperostosis is presented. The parosteal lipoma is a rare benign tumor containing adipose tissue and is intimately related to the periosteum. We report the MRI features and correlative pathologic findings of a parosteal lipoma. The MRI technique is useful for evaluating the relationship between the periosteum and the lipoma.
