Notes: Abstract. A case of jaundice due to obstruction of Roux en Y-limb following hepatectomy for a hilar cholangiocarcinoma is presented. Percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage improved the jaundice but promoted disseminated intravascular coagulopathy. Our limited experience suggested that afferent loops should be drained directly to prevent reflux of enteric contents into the biliary system.

Notes: Abstract A 3-oxo-Δ4-steroid 5β-reductase (5β-reductase) deficiency is difficult to diagnose because severe liver damage can result in a similar pattern of metabolite excretion. We investigated the usefulness of immunoblot analysis for diagnosis of 5β-reductase deficiency and quantitatively analysed urinary bile acids by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in a 5-month-old Japanese boy with severe neonatal cholestasis associated with hypertyrosinaemia. A liver sample was examined by immunoblot analysis using monoclonal antibodies against 5β-reductase. Urinary 3-oxo-Δ4 bile acids accounted for 88.3% of total bile acids, 5α-bile acids for 0.9%, and primary bile acids for 9.1%. Immunoblot analysis of the liver tissue showed an indistinct band of 5β-reductase. Conclusions These findings suggest that this patient had a secondary 5β-reductase deficiency due to severe liver damage, even though 3-oxo-Δ4 bile acids constituted more than 70% of total urinary bile acids. However, the patient may possibly have had an inherited 5β-reductase deficiency.

Notes: Ion-molecule reactions of silicon-carbon binary cluster ions SiC+n (n=1–6) and SiC−n (n=2–4) with O2 molecules were studied by using an rf ion trap. For all selected positive and negative parent ions, only SiCnO+ or SiCnO− were produced, respectively. The rate constants for the oxidation of these clusters were determined for the first time. The size dependence of the reactivities are discussed, and the presence of the ring form positive ions for n=3 and 5 are suggested. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A cell and gas-handling system of the supercritical material for x-ray absorption measurement are designed. The cell was made of stainless steel with a pair of Be windows of 3 mm thickness. The x-ray path can be controlled by changing the distance between two Be windows. Electric cartridge heaters are embedded in the cell to control the temperature. With this system we have studied the supercritical state of CF3Br, whose critical point is 67 °C and 39.1 atm. The results of x-ray absorption fine structure measurements for Br K edge for gaseous, liquid, and supercritical states of this material are presented together with the performance of the gas-handling system. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have developed a new compact retarding-potential Mott spin polarimeter and achieved an efficiency of 1.9×10−4 for gold target operating in 25 keV. A novel design of the retarding field electron optics with 0.59 sr collection solid angle for scattered electrons was adopted based on Monte Carlo calculations for the spin-dependent electron scattering process and electron beam ray-tracing calculations. We have combined the new spin polarimeter with an angle-resolved photoelectron spectrometer and measured the spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectra and studied the spin-dependent electronic structure of Ni(110) along the Γ¯S¯ line of its surface Brilluoin zone. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A portable spin- and angle-resolving photoelectron spectrometer has been constructed, equipped with a newly developed compact retarding-potential Mott-scattering electron spin polarimeter with an efficiency of 1.9 × 10−4 for a gold target. Based on Monte Carlo calculations for the spin-dependent electron-scattering process and electron ray-tracing calculations, a novel design of the retarding-field electron optics with 0.59 sr collection solid angle for scattered electrons has been accomplished. Utilizing this spectrometer, the spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectra have been measured and the spin-dependent electronic structure of Ni(110), Ni(110)-p(2 × 1)O and Ni(110)-c(2 × 2)S along the {\overline {\Gamma S}} line of the Ni(110) surface Brillouin zone have been studied.

Notes: Abstract Experiments on anesthetized cats were used to study the activity of motor cortex neurons (field 4γ) in response to separate and simultaneous stimulation of the ventrolateral nucleus of the thalamus and the somatosensory cortex (field 2) of the brain. Long-term potentiation of motor cortex neuron activity in response to simultaneous stimulation of the ventrolateral nucleus and somatosensory cortex arose only in regions receiving corticocortical projections from the stimulation site in the somatosensory cortex of the brain, while regions lacking corticocortical projections from the somatosensory cortex showed no such effect. Experiments demonstrated that the duration of increased motor cortex neuron activity following stimulation of the ventrolateral nucleus of the thalamus and somatosensory cortex was greater than one hour after recording was started. These data led to the conclusion that simultaneous stimulation of corticocortical and thalamocortical afferents can alter the level of neuronal activity in the motor cortex only in regions with convergent sensory inputs from the thalamus and somatosensory cortex of the brain.

Notes: Abstract. A 69-year-old man developed obstructive jaundice 6 months after laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiography suggested a common bile duct (CD) stone. A second operation was performed, and this revealed a CBD stone with an endoclip as a nidus. Since laparoscopic surgery has become a very common procedure, endoclips are used more frequently. Therefore, careful surveillance and strict follow-up are stressed to avoid CBD stone and various other complications caused by endoclips.

Notes: Abstract  A cDNA coding for the glucoamylase of Corticium rolfsii AHU 9627 was cloned using synthetic oligonucleotide probes that code for inner amino acid sequences of the purified enzyme. This clone (CG 15) is 1900 base pairs long and contains the entire coding region for a polypeptide of 579 residues. Comparison with amino acid sequences of other fungal glucoamylases showed homologies of 35% – 56%, and most homology with that of Aspergillus niger. The expression plasmid pACG 115 was constructed by introduction of the coding region of CG 15 into a yeast expression vector pAAH 5, containing the promoter and terminator of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH1). Saccharomyces cerevisiae AH 22, containing the recombinant plasmid pACG 115, acquired starch-saccharifying ability.
