    Notes: Ion sources for radioactive beam facilities are integrated systems of production target and ionizer which have to convert the limited number of particles produced in nuclear reactions efficiently and selectively into an ion beam. The figures of merit for such a system are thus its efficiency for a desired isotope and its discrimination against the unwanted elements. The efficiency is the product of release efficiency (a characteristic of the integrated system) and ionization efficiency, the latter characterizing the ionizing mechanism. The ionizers described include both the ones routinely used in isotope separation on-line as well as promising new developments; they are classified according to their ionizing medium, utilizing electrons, heat, or photons, respectively. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Description / Table of Contents: Fractures of the distal third of the clavicle tend to develop delayed union or nonunion when treated conservatively. Correct diagnosis of fracture instability and/or associated lesions of the ligamentous structures of the acromioclavicular joint is mandatory for adequate fracture treatment. When classical radiographs fail to demonstrate instability, stress roentgenographs of both shoulders are indicated. From 1985 to 1994, 66 adult patients with a fracture of the distal clavicle were treated at our institution. Fracture classification was performed according to Jäger/Breitner. Fractures were unstable in 36 cases (54.5%). An associated lesion of the acromioclavicular joint was present in 8 patients presenting with an unstable fracture. Fracture instability was due to an associated fracture of the coracoid process in two cases. Stable fractures were treated conservatively. Thirty-three unstable fractures were treated surgically. Plate fixation was performed when at least three screws could be placed in the distal fragment. When the distal fragment was small or associated with acromioclavicular joint involvement, it was stabilized by PDS banding of the clavicle to the coracoid process and reconstruction of the ligaments. Results were evaluated retrospectively by questionnaire, clinically and by radiological examination. Fifty patients (76%) were reexamined. The outcome was good or excellent in 96% of unstable fractures that had been treated surgically. Results after conservative treatment of unstable fractures (n=3) were poor. Conservative treatment of stable fractures resulted in all cases in a good-to-excellent result. For fractures of the distal clavicle, good results can be achieved when the instability is recognized and adequately treated. The association of a distal clavicular fracture and an acromioclavicular ligament disruption should be added as a separate subtype in the existing classification of distal clavicular fractures. PDS banding is a valuable alternative for fractures with small peripheral fragment or associated acromioclavicular disruption.

Laterale Klavikulafrakturen mit zusätzlicher Sprengung des Akromioklavikulargelenks, und Frakturen, bei denen die Instabilität auf einen Abriß des Processus coracoideus zurückzuführen sind, sollten in der bestehenden Klassifikation gesondert berücksichtigt werden. Die PDS-Gurtung ermöglicht bei in-stabilen Frakturen mit kleinem peripheren Fragment oder bei zusätzlicher Verletzung des Akromioklavikulargelenks eine adäquate Frakturstabilisierung.

    Notes: Abstract: The β decay of 61Ga to its mirror nucleus 61Zn has been measured for the first time by using on-line mass separation and β-delayed gamma-ray spectroscopy. The observed decay strength to the ground state implies superallowed character in accordance with the systematics of the mirror decays in the sd and fp shell. The β feedings observed to four excited states in 61Zn are consistent with earlier spin-parity assignments based on in-beam experiments. The ground-state spin and parity for 61Ga were determined to be 3/2−.

    Description / Table of Contents: Due to good results using angularly stable internal fixation systems on other parts of the body, we began to use this system for the hindfoot. The size of the fixation device was adapted to this part of the locomotive system. Up to now, we have implanted this internal fixation system for eight patients with arthrodesis of the lower ankle and talonavicular joints, and two os naviculare fractures. During operation, a high arthrodesis stability could be observed. Complications have not occurred and the postoperative courses are normal. Extirpation of the internal fixation system was already performed on two patients due to complete development of the arthrodesis, and the other six patients demonstrate good bone healing.
    Notes: Aufgrund der ermutigenden Ergebnisse bei der Verwendung von winkelstabilen Implantaten in anderen Körperregionen erfolgte auch im Fußrückenbereich der Einsatz von entsprechend dimensionierten winkelstabilen Implantaten. Bei 8 Patienten wurde ein Titanfixateur interne zur Arthrodese des unteren Sprunggelenks, des Talonavikulargelenks sowie zur Versorgung von 2 Os-naviculare-Frakturen eingesetzt. Klinisch zeigte sich intraoperativ eine hohe Stabilität im Arthrodesenbereich. Es traten keine postoperativen Komplikationen auf, alle Heilungsverläufe waren ungestört. In 2 Fällen wurde das Implantatmaterial nach knöcherner Durchbauung entfernt, die übrigen 6 Fälle zeigen eine regelrechte Konsolidierung.

    Notes: Abstract Using an 11.4MeV/u136Xe beam of the UNILAC accelerator of GSI and anatW target, A=184 isobars were produced and separated by using an on-line mass separator. A new isomeric state was found in184Hf. This state decays with a half-life of 48(10) s and emits three γ-rays of 73, 482, and 555 keV as well as lower-lying cascade transitions. The hindrance of the 73 keV-E1 transition with ΔK=8 is compared with those of other even-even hafnium isotopes. The half-life of184Lu was estimated to be between 15 and 25s.

    Notes: Abstract The EC/β+-decay of the odd-odd nucleus100Ag was studied by means of total absorptionγ-ray spectrometry. Most of the Gamow-Teller strength was found to be concentrated at an excitation energy of 5.6 MeV in100Pd, the FWHM of this resonance being 1.5 MeV. The measured strength distribution which is interpreted within the BCS approximation as being due to the dominant population of four-quasiparticle excitations, resembles the distribution predicted by an advanced shell-model calculation for the98Ag →98Cd decay.
