Notes: Abstract  Mechanical properties of titanium thin films of 0.5 μm thickness and aluminum thin films of 1.0 μm thickness, microfabricated by magnetron sputtering, were measured by using a novel tensile machine. These thin films are difficult to handle because they are fragile, so the thin film specimens were fabricated by using semiconductor manufacturing technology in a silicon frame to protect them. The test section of these specimens was 300 μm in width and 1400 μm in gauge length. By gripping the thin film specimen with a new device using a micrometer, it could be mounted on the tensile machine easily. The stress-strain diagrams of both thin films were measured continuously in the atmosphere at room temperature. The experimental results indicated that the titanium thin film and the aluminum thin film had a smaller breaking elongation although they had a larger tensile strength than bulk pure titanium and bulk pure aluminum, respectively.

Notes: Summary  Haemorrhage due to cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) varies from massive, requiring urgent operations, to clinically silent. The present study was designated to identify factors influencing haematoma size, and the pathophysiological mechanisms of massive haemorrhage were studied. 55 patients with intracerebral haematomas due to supratentorial AVMs were included in this study. Angiographic and clinical findings were retrospectively evaluated in relation to haematoma size.  Statistical analysis demonstrated that small size and the presence of only one draining vein were high risk factors for massive haemorrhage. The haematoma volume in small AVMs (30±4 cm3) was significantly larger than in other AVMs (7±3 cm3) (p=0.0005). AVMs with only one draining vein were associated with massive haematoma volume as compared to AVMs with two or more draining veins (30±4 versus 11±3 cm3, p=0.0023).  Our previous study demonstrated that feeding artery pressure (FAP) was significantly higher in AVMs with haemorrhage than in those without, as was draining vein pressure (DVP), and FAP and DVP were inversely related to the number of draining veins and the size of the AVMs. Thus, in small AVMs and AVMs with only one draining vein, local increase in DVP may thus contribute to massive haemorrhage.

Notes: Abstract. Effects of methyl jasmonate (MeJA) on rice floret opening were investigated in seven cultivars or hybrid combinations covering various variety types. Intact or excised panicles, judged to have florets just before anthesis, were soaked in 4 × 10−5− 4 × 10−3M MeJA solutions for 2 min at different temperatures. The results indicated that MeJA significantly induced opening of rice florets within about 30 min, with the most rapid induction occurring just 6 min after treatment. Numbers of induced opening florets are correlated with MeJA concentrations. Higher concentrations of MeJA induced more florets. pH values had no influence on MeJA effect, but MeJA required less time and induced more florets at 34°C than at 25°C. As far as we know, this is the first evidence that floret opening is induced by plant hormones. CO2 evolution from panicles was also increased by MeJA treatment. Field experiments revealed that perfect flowering synchrony between the cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS) and restorer lines in hybrid seed production could be obtained by spraying MeJA solution on CMS line plants at the rate of 25 mg/m2. As a result, many more hybrid seeds were harvested.

Notes: Abstract  Concepts of microfactories consisting of microdevices made by micromachine technologies are discussed. A microfactory is a small production system whose size is very small with respect to the dimensions of the small products. Typical examples of microfactories are classified according to production types. Microfactory systems have a great possibility to innovate the production systems of small products by making the best use of the inherent properties of the systems such as miniaturized facilities, mobility and flexibility. The microfactory saves energy, manufacturing space and mineral resources with decreasing size of the factory facilities.

Notes: Abstract The elastic stress of a specimen subjected to repeated loads is measured by a microscopic observation of slip-bands in nickel foil bonded to the surface of the specimen. The relation between the stress amplitude and the density of slip-bands in the foil is examined at various temperatures. An image-processing system using a personal computer is applied for an automatic measurement of the density of slip-bands in the bonded foil. The density of slip-bands replicated in a plastic film is also measured by the imageprocessing system, and it is in good agreement with the density of the original slip-bands. The peak stresses in grooved shafts under bending are measured using the nickel foil gage and the image-processing system. It is found that the results are satisfactority accurate.
