Notes: Summary  A 57-year-old, previously healthy man who developed acute onset of hemiplegia is presented. Neuro-imaging studies on admission suggested dissection of the middle cerebral artery producing infarction in the frontotemporal region. In contrast to his stable clinical course, serial neuro-imaging studies disclosed rapid growth of malignant glioma, which was confirmed at surgery. Microscopic examination of the surgical specimen demonstrated invasion of glioma cells into the arterial wall associated with intramural haematoma formation of the middle cerebral artery. This case is the first to document dissection of an intracranial artery caused by invasion of tumour cells.

Notes: This study analyzes synchrotron radiation heat loading effects on optical components of beamline BL12.0 for EUV interferometry and soft x-ray microscopy at the Advanced Light Source (ALS). Newly developed indirect side-cooled beamline optics were considered, and the resulting surface distortion of mirrors and grating indicates that there is no significant degradation of beamline performance in spectral resolution or throughput. Also analyzed are the effects of heat loading on end-station components, such as Fresnel zone plates, transmission gratings, masks and membranes. Experimental results of heat loaded membranes are presented as well in this writing. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: This bending magnet beamline has been in operation since February 1995 for the characterization of optical elements (mirrors, gratings, multilayers, detectors, etc.) in the energy range 50–1000 eV. Although it was designed primarily for precision reflectometry of multilayer reflecting optics for EUV projection lithography, it has capabilities for a wide range of measurements. The optics consist of a monochromator, a reflectometer, and refocusing mirrors to provide a small spot on the sample. The monochromator is a very compact, entrance-slitless, varied-line-spacing plane-grating design in which the mechanically ruled grating operates in the converging light from a spherical mirror working at high demagnification. Aberrations of the mirror are corrected by the line spacing variation, so that the spectral resolving power λ/Δλ is limited by the ALS source size to about 7000. Wavelength is scanned by simple rotation of the grating with a fixed exit slit. The reflectometer has the capability of positioning the sample to within 10 μm and setting its angular position to 0.002°. LABVIEWTM based software provides a convenient interface to the user. The reflectometer is separated from the beamline by a differential pump and can be pumped down in 1/2 hour. Auxiliary experimental stations can be mounted behind the reflectometer. Results are shown that demonstrate the performance and operational convenience of the beamline © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: High-quality Ga0.92In0.08N–GaN multiple quantum wells structures (MQW) were grown successfully by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy. Fine multilayer structures with a thickness period of 7–9 nm were detected by secondary ion mass spectroscopy. The dislocation density in the MQW was found to be in the range of 0.5–2×109 cm−2 by transmission electron microscopy. The MQW extremely enhanced by two orders of magnitude, the cathodoluminescence intensity compared with bulk Ga0.91In0.09N. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: p-type conduction in InN-containing nitrides doped with Mg has been achieved by metalorganic vapor-phase epitaxy. The hole concentration at room temperature is as high as 7×1017 cm−3. The activation energy of a Mg acceptor is estimated to be 204 meV. D–A pair emission with peak wavelength of about 405 nm is enhanced by thermal annealing. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We measured the Schottky barrier heights and specific contact resistivities of four different metals on p-type GaN. The Schottky barrier heights of Pt, Ni, Au, and Ti were obtained from the current-voltage characteristics to be 0.50, 0.50, 0.57, and 0.65 eV, respectively. The specific contact resistivities were 0.013, 0.015, 0.026, and 0.035 Ω⋅cm2, respectively. Our experimental results proved that the Schottky barrier heights and specific contact resistivities decrease with increase in metal work function as expected theoretically. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: By using a helicon plasma sputtering technique, a one-dimensional Ti/Al multilayer zone plate with an outermost layer width of 76 nm has been successfully fabricated. A Bragg–Fresnel lens has been made by combining this zone plate with a Ge(422) crystal. Comparison of the Ti/Al multilayer zone plate with the Ag/Al zone plate is discussed in terms of focusing efficiency.

Notes: A superconducting wiggler has been successfully installed at the ETL 800 MeV electron storage ring facility (TERAS). The operation of the wiggler at magnetic field strengths of 5 T with electron beam energy of 750 MeV has been accomplished. The wiggler has been designed and constructed to produce synchrotron radiation with critical photon energy around 3 keV for scientific, industrial and medical applications. We report here experiments that demonstrate the possibility of stable operation of a superconducting wiggler in a small storage ring.

Notes: Abstract Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) cell suspension cultures of Verticillium albo-atrum resistant and susceptible genotypes were established from leaf callus tissues. Treatment of cultures with conidia and heat-released elicitors of V. albo-atrum induced a large increase in the activity of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, only in the cells of the resistant genotypes with a maximum after 12 h. In co-cultivation with the fungal conidia and resistant cell lines, the production of spores were inhibited.

Notes: Abstract Mutations in hMSH2 and hMLH1 genes were analyzed in patients from 11 Japanese families that had been diagnosed as carrying hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) by clinical examination. Germ line mutations of hMSH2 gene were identified in 5 independent families in which colorectal (87% of patients), endometrial (30%), ovarian (17%), gastric (14%), and other cancers existed. Five mutations detected between codons 136 and 811 included single-base substitutions (C→T and T→G), a T deletion, and an A insertion, all of which produced stop codons resulting in truncated proteins, and an A→T substitution at splice donor site of exon 5 which resulted in deletion of this exon. Moreover, one HNPCC family was presumed to have germ line mutation of hMSH2 gene because a somatic mutation of hMSH2 gene was detected in a cancer from a patient in this family. In addition to these 11 families already diagnosed with HNPCC, 3 new families with germ line mutations of hMSH2 gene and hMLH1 gene were found through analysis of DNA from patients who had multiple cancers with alteration in microsatellite DNA. These mutations included an AG deletion at codons 877–878 of hMSH2 gene, an AAG deletion at codons 616–618 of hMLH1 gene, and a C→T single-base substitution at codon 217 of hMLH1 gene. Seven of eight germ line mutations found in this study are new mutations that have not been reported previously. In families in which germ line mutations were identified presymptomatic examination was then carried out using polymerase chain reaction single-strand conformation polymorphism analysis of DNA from peripheral blood, and the result was the detection of family members predisposed to HNPCC who did not yet show signs of cancer. These results indicate the value of DNA analysis in the screening and diagnosis of HNPCC patients and families.
