Notizen: Three-dimensional electron optical simulations were used to model scanning tunneling microscope (STM) lithography in resists under field emission conditions. This work focuses on the effect of resists, as dielectric layers, between the tip and conducting substrate on the operation of the STM. Simulations were performed for resist thicknesses of 1–50 nm and tip-resist separations of 1–20 nm. For a fixed 10 nm tip-resist separation, the axial electric field at the tip decreases by a factor of 2.3 over the resist thickness range. The results show that the tip-resist separation must decrease with increasing resist thickness, to achieve the operating conditions and the energy of electrons entering the resist can be significantly less than the applied tip-substrate bias. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Abstract A lithotrophic ammonia-oxidizing bacterium of the Nitrosomonas type was isolated from the lower River Elbe. Enrichment was attained from suspended particulate matter (SPM) of a water sample. At its natural environment, this species almost exclusively occurred attached to flocs, as demonstrated with the immunofluorescence technique. On the species level, the isolate was not related to any of the described Nitrosomonas species. The strain was characterized by strong production of exopolymeric substances (EPS) and was observed to occur self-flocculating in pure cultures. Low ammonia concentrations stimulated EPS production. The EPS revealed an extensive capacity for binding particulate and dissolved materials, as well as cells of other bacterial species. This capacity was affected by changing pH values or salt concentrations of the medium. The EPS appeared to function as a buffer against toxic compounds and against changing environmental conditions. Another Nitrosomonas strain isolated from the Elbe estuary, but lacking recognizable EPS production, was used for comparison.

Notizen: Abstract Of 91 limb-salvage procedures using prosthetic reconstructions because of primary or metastatic bone and soft-tissue tumors 26 revisions were performed in 16 patients. Revision was due to polyethylene wear (9 cases), aseptic loosening (8 cases), recurrent hip dislocation (3 cases), prosthetic stem fracture (2 cases), infection (2 cases), leg length discrepancy (1 case), and traumatic dislocation of a saddle prosthesis (1 case). The follow-up period for tumor control varied from 1.5 to 22 years with a median of 13.5 years. The follow-up period after the last revision operation varied from 0.5 to 12 years with a median of 3 years. At the last follow-up, the functional results had deteriorated compared with after the primary operation in 5 patients and had improved in 2 patients. In the remaining patients, the results did not change.

Notizen: Abstract The management of locally advanced soft-tissue sarcomas (STS) of the extremities in patients who present with regional and/or distant metastases at the time of diagnosis remains an unsolved problem. The recently introduced hyperthermic isolated limb perfusion (HILP) with tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α and melphalan has been shown to be an effective limb-saving treatment modality, but is it feasible to use this approach with palliative intent? Nine patients, five men and four women, mean age 41 (range 21–75) years with locally advanced extremity STS and regional (n = 3) or distant (n = 6) metastases at the time of diagnosis, underwent a palliative HILP with TNF-α and melphalan. Resection of the residual tumour mass was performed, if possible, 6–8 weeks after HILP. Treatment-related morbidity, local recurrences and the limb salvage rate were scored during follow-up. The median follow-up period was 9 (range 3–39) months (seven deaths, but six were due to metastatic disease). Treatment-related morbidity was seen after 3 of the 10 perfusions performed (30%) and consisted of superficial wound infections (n = 2), blow out of the external iliac artery followed by an iliac thrombosis (n = 1). Two patients showed local recurrences after HILP followed by resection of the residual tumour mass, and one patient showed local progression after two perfusions without resection. Limb salvage was achieved in 8 patients (89%). Therefore, HILP with TNF-α and melphalan for locally advanced extremity STS in patients with disseminated disease is feasible. The local management of locally advanced extremity STS should be the same whether the intent is curative or palliative, as the local control improves the quality of life.
