    Notes: Abstract The relationships between glucose-6-phosphate isomerase (Gpi) genotype and quantitative variation related to reproduction and growth were explored over the lifespan of a single cohort of northern bay scallops, Argopecten irradians irradians (Lamarck), from September 1986 to April 1988 in the Niantic River estuary, Connecticut, USA. Analyses revealed that Gpi genotype explained an increasingly significant proportion of variation in scallop size (up to 15%) as the cohort aged. The genotype-specific effects were consistent across sampling dates and among measured traits. There was no evidence for heterosis with respect to size at this locus; however, rare genotypes contributed substantially to the relationship and showed some tendency to fall on the extremes of the phenotypic distribution. The strength and consistency of the genotypic effect on scallop size suggest that genetic variation for Gpi, or some locus in linkage disequilibrium with Gpi, may translate into biochemical and/or physiological variation and affect fitness in this species.

    Notes: Abstract An international multicenter study (Germany Sweden, and Switzerland) was performed to investigate the feasibility and diagnostic of standard video-conferencing (VC) technology for remote expert consultation in radiology. Three high spatial resolution films (hand-bone, mammography, chest) and two low-spatial-resolution image sets (liver CT and MR1) were studied (total 446 images taken from different examinations). The images were recordedby a video camera transmitted via public broadband networks, and displayed on a video monitor. The resolution of the recorded images varied from 24 lp mm to 4.8 lp/mm at maximum zoom. Alter 3–4 months, the images were reexamined using conventional light-box reading. Diagnostic reliability was evaluated by receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis. With video conferencing, there was a noticeable loss of diagnostic accuracy for the high-spatial-resolution films, whereas for liver CT and liver MRIimages VC reading seemed to be satisfactory (average area value difference 〈 0.02)

    Notes: Abstract Marked hypoxia secondary to intrapulmonary right-to-left shunting is a characteristic of respiratory failure in human neonates and can sometimes be complicated by additional extrapulmonary right-to-left shunting. To investigate the effect of inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) on intrapulmonary shunting, two typical pulmonary diseases of the newborn (respiratory distress syndrome and meconium aspiration) were reproduced in 32 mechanically ventilated rabbits weighing approximately 2 kg each. After tracheotomy, catheters were inserted into a jugular vein, a carotid artery and the right ventricle (to measure systolic right ventricular pressure [SRVP] and mixed venous oxygen content for calculation of shunt by Fick equation). Repeated airway lavages (LAV) with normal saline or repeated instillations of a suspension of human meconium (MEC) were continued until both the a/A-ratio was ≤0.14 and a peak inspiratory pressure ≥22 mbar was needed to keep the tidal volume constant at 10 ml/kg of body weight. Measurements of shunt, SRVP, systolic systemic pressure, physiological dead space, tidal volume and a ventilation index were performed before and after completion of lung damage and at 20 and 60 min after administering iNO at 80 ppm. Four groups of rabbits were studied (n = 8 in each group): LAV control and intervention, Mec control and intervention. 60 min after starting iNO, there was a decrease in shunt (LAV: 67.6% ± [SD] 11.3% vs 56.2 ± 16.4, P = 0.05; MEC: 52.6 ± 6.3 vs 44.3 ± 8.3, P 〈 0.05), in SRVP (LAV: 29.7 mmHg ± 10.1 mmHg vs 20.0 ± 8.2, P 〈 0.01; MEC: 25.1 ± 4.4 vs 22.3 ± 5.0, P = 0.46) and in dead space (% of tidal volume, LAV: 32.7% ± 10.5% vs 25.9 ± 10.1, P 〈 0.01; MEC: 26.1 ± 16.6 vs 18.9 ± 10.1, P = 0.05). These results demonstrate that iNO decreases intrapulmonary shunt (as well as SRVP and dead space). We suggest that iNO may be beneficial in human newborns with severe respiratory failure even if no extrapulmonary shunting via ductus or foramen ovale is apparent.

    Notes: Raman scattering and infrared absorption of the C84 and Sc2@C84 isomers 23:D2d were studied at room temperature and 95 K. The results are compared to the response of pristine and doped C60. According to the lower symmetry and the higher number of atoms C84 exhibits much more vibrational modes than C60, in particular at wave numbers above 500 cm−1. For lower energies the vibrational structure of C84 resembles a downshifted and split C60 spectrum. After the encapsulation of two scandium atoms the overall vibrational structure and the number of C84 modes was preserved as a result of the similar geometric structure. From the very good correlation of the C84 and Sc2@C84 cage modes metal to fullerene charge transfer induced shifts could be analyzed. The lines were found less shifted compared to the C60 modes in exohedral doped A6C60 (A=K,Rb,Cs). Increased line widths of low energy cage modes were attributed to an additional intramolecular relaxation channel related to the dynamics of the encapsulated scandium ions. A set of nine new lines with almost complementary Raman and infrared intensities was found for Sc2@C84 below 200, at 246 and at 259 cm−1, and attributed to Sc–C84 vibrations. These vibrations were further identified as Sc–C84 stretching and Sc–C84 deformation modes. The Sc–C84 valence force constant of 1.19 N/cm was derived with a linear three-mass oscillator model for Sc2@C84. Both, the charge transfer induced line shifts and the Sc–C84 valence force constant indicate an effective transfer of approximately two electrons per scandium to the carbon cage. This is in agreement with an electronic state (Sc2.2+)2@C84〈sup ARRANGE="STAGGER"〉4.4− previously proposed on the basis of x-ray powder diffraction, x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), and quantum chemical calculations. The unexpected high number of Sc–C84 vibrations is attributed to crystal field and factor group splitting. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Magnetic exchange anisotropy has been studied in epitaxial Fe3O4 based bilayers grown by pulsed laser deposition on MgO substrates. Measurements of the exchange biasing of the Fe3O4 magnetization curves were performed on (100)- and (111)-oriented Fe3O4 (20 nm)/CoO (20 nm) bilayers and (100)-oriented Co0.16Fe2.84O4 (190 nm)/Fe3O4 (40–370 nm) bilayers. The effective exchange bias field Heb and coupling energy were found to be 10–102 kA/m and 1–2 mJ/m2, respectively. The dependence of Heb on the thickness d of the soft magnetic component (magnetite) of the cobalt ferrite/magnetite bilayer Heb∼1/d is found to be in agreement with the predictions of a Stoner–Wohlfarth-type model. The order of magnitude and the temperature dependence of Heb for the Fe3O4/CoO bilayers are similar to those of bilayers prepared by molecular beam epitaxy. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Summary Three cases, one each of native valve, prosthetic valve and composite graft endocarditis caused byRothia dentocariosa are described. The first patient presented with multiple brain abscesses and severe congestive heart failure due to destructive endocarditis with large vegetations on the mitral valve. He died shortly after emergency valve replacement. Gram-positive coccoid rods were identified in the vegetations of the excised mitral valve. The second patient had aR. dentocariosa endocarditis of a prosthetic aortic valve that was treated empirically with netilmicin and teicoplanin, due to an allergy to penicillin. Both antibiotics were replaced according to susceptibility testingin vitro with rifampin and ciprofloxacin, and the endocarditis was cured within 9 weeks. The third patient presented with a circular root abscess of an aortic composite graft that was successfully treated with rifampin and ceftriaxone without surgery. All patients had extensive periodontal disease which was thought to be responsible for hematogenic spread and seeding of the microorganism. The microbiological identification and antibiotic resistance pattern of the isolates, as well as therapeutic implications are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract In order to study DNA replication control elements in cyanobacteria we cloned and sequenced the dnaA gene from the marine cyanobacterium Prochlorococcus marinus. The dnaA gene is ubiquitous among bacteria and encodes the DNA replication initiation factor DnaA. The deduced amino acid sequence of the P. marinus DnaA protein shows highest similarity to the DnaA protein from the freshwater cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC6803. Using a solid-phase DNA binding assay we demonstrated that both cyanobacterial DnaA proteins specifically recognize chromosomal origins, oriC, of Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis in vitro. The genetic environment of dnaA is not conserved between the two cyanobacteria. Upstream of the P. marinusdnaA gene we identified a gene encoding a putative ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transport protein. The gor gene encoding glutathione reductase lies downstream of dnaA. Comparison of the genetic structure of dnaA regions from 15 representative bacteria shows that the pattern of genes flanking dnaA is not universally conserved among them.
