Notes: [Auszug] Catechol oxidases are ubiquitous plant enzymes containing a dinuclear copper center. In the wound-response mechanism of the plant they catalyze the oxidation of a broad range of ortho-diphenols to the corresponding o-quinones coupled with the reduction of oxygen to water. The crystal structures of ...

Notes: Abstract A flow injection analysis (FIA) method for the automated determination of hydrogen peroxide in the presence of even stronger oxidants is presented based on the immediate formation of a colored adduct between hydrogen peroxide and a dinuclear iron(III) complex. A reagent stream with the complex and a carrier stream into which the sample is injected are combined in a low dead volume mixing tee. A reaction coil provides for a reaction time of 7 s, after which detection is performed using UV/ vis spectroscopy at 575 nm. Major advantages of the method are the simple experimental setup and the high selectivity even towards stronger oxidants. Real samples have been investigated and the method has been validated using independent techniques including microplate spectrophotometry and HPLC.

Notes: The new diiron complex [Fe2(tbpo){O2As(CH3)2}(CH3O)(CH3OH)](ClO4)3 · 5 CH3OH · 2 H2O (1) containing a (μ-alkoxo)(μ-dimethylarsinato)diiron(III) core was synthesized using the heptadentate ligand N,N,N′,N′-Tetrakis(2-benzimidazolylmethyl)-1,3-diamino-2-propanol (Htbpo). The complex was characterized structurally by X-ray crystallography. 1reproduces the coordination mode and the stoichiometry of the proposed purple acid phosphatase-arsenate inhibitor complex. More importantly, 1 is a good functional model for the activation of small molecules, since the solvent molecule in the coordination sphere of each iron ion can be substituted very easily by a small substrate molecule. This is confirmed by the comparatively high pH-dependent catalase-like activity of 1. In order to study the influence of the cacodylate bridge on the formation of the metastable adduct with hydrogen peroxide, the analogous hydroxo-bridged complex [Fe2(tbpo)(OH)(NO3)2](NO3)2 · CH3OH · 2 H2O (2) was employed. The reactions of 1and 2 with H2O2 were studied as a function of [H2O2], pH, temperature, and pressure, and the kinetic results including the activation parameters are reported. In the case of compound 2 the reaction proceeds in one step, and the observed first order rate constant, kobs, shows a linear dependence on the hydrogen peroxide concentration with a zero intercept. For complex 1 the kinetic traces could be fitted to two exponential functions. One of the observed pseudo-first-order rate constants, kobs1, exhibits a linear dependence on the hydrogen peroxide concentration with a zero intercept, whereas the other rate constant, kobs2, was independent of the hydrogen peroxide concentration. A mechanistic interpretation is presented.Supporting information for this article is available on the WWW under http://www.wiley-vch.de/contents/jc_2005/1999/99068_s.pdf or from the author.

Notes: The hydrogen abstraction of radical intermediates yielded by radical addition to the methylene compound 6, shows excellent facial selectivity. Conformational analyses of the radical intermediates were carried out by quantum chemical calculations and explain these results. The chiral radicals 7 and 8, yielded from the chiral bromides 3 and 4, lead with ethyl acrylate to the adducts 28 and 29 with more 96% de. The adduct 28 was converted to the optically active γ-valerolactone 30. The structures of the bromides 3, 4 and 31 as well as the radical adducts 19a, 24 and 25 have been verified by X-ray diffraction analysis.

Notes: Hitherto unknown 1,2,3-triphosphetenes RC=P—PCF3—PCF3 (3a-d) are formed as main products in reactions of phosphaalkynes R—C≡P [R = iPr2N (1a), tBu (1b), Me2EtC (1c), 1-methylcyclohexyl (1d)] with the cyclotetraphosphane (PCF3)4 (2). According to NMR results the CF3 groups in 3a-d have a trans disposition; an X-ray diffraction study of 3a confirms this structure. The P—P bond lengths in 3a are equal [2.201 (2) and 2.204 (2) Å] and correspond to single bonds. A considerable shortening is observed for the sp2-C-N bond (1.336 Å) which, together with the elongation of the P=C bond (1.746 Å), indicates effective π donation of the lone pair on nitrogen. Surprisingly, 3a can be prepared in quantitative yields by reaction of the PP ylide Me3P=PCF3 (6) with 1 a (molar ratio: 2:1). In contrast, the corresponding reactions of 6 with the alkyl-substituted phosphaalkynes 1b-d lead to the novel phosphorus ylides Me3P=C(R)—P—PCF3—PCF3PCF3 [R = tBu (10a), Me2EtC (10b), 1-methylcyclohexyl (10c)] in good yields. In their molecular groundstate structures, determined by X-ray diffraction, the lone pair on the phosphano P atom prefers the syn position with respect to the ylidic P=C bond. An unusual lengthening of the sp2-C-C bond [1.553 (4) (10a), 1.543 (6) (10b), 1.551 (4) Å (10c)] to values typical for sp3-C/sp3-C distances is observed.

Notes: Proceeding from the α-B-SbW9O33 fragment 1, various novel large heteropolyanions ([Na2Sb8W36O132(H2O)4]22- (2), [Sb2W22O74(OH)2]12- (3) and [Sb2W20M2O70(H2O)6](14-2n)- (4); Mn+ = Fe3+, Co2+, Mn2+, Ni2+) have been obtained in crystalline form by systematic synthesis. Their unexpected structures have been studied by X-ray diffraction: 2, 3 and 4 contain β-SbW9 units connected to each other by Sb3+ ions, WO2/WO2OH groups, and WO2/Mn+ (H2O)3 groups, respectively. Structural details and especially the systematic synthesis strategy for the formation of these interesting polytungstates are discussed in order to explain the unusual behaviour of 1 in aqueous solution under different reaction conditions.

Description / Table of Contents: The Crystal Structure of Synthetic Stuetzite, Ag5-xTe3The crystal structure of Ag5-xTe3 was determined by single crystal X-ray structure analysis. The structure is of hexagonal symmetry (P 62m, Nr. 189) with a = 13.456(9) Å and c = 16.917(9) Å. The compound consists of highly mobile silver cations distributed in a tellurium framework forming Frank-Kasper polyhedra. Tellurium exists as Te2- as well as Te22--dumbbells and forms three types of tetrahedral sites. A description of the distribution of silver on the tetrahedral voids is given resulting in a suggestion of possible diffusion paths. Finally the homogenity region of Ag5-xTe3 is derived from the structure.

Notes: The essential trace element copper plays a key role in living systems. Its metalloproteins are involved in various reactions. The IT ononuclear blue copper type-1 proteins take, part in electron transfer processes. Type-2 proteins can either act as oxidases, oxygenases, dioxygenases, or superoxide dismutases, containing one copper core. Dinuclear copper centers of Type-3 proteins are the oxygen transport system hemocyanin, oxidases and oxygenases. Due to this variety of functions copper deficiency and also abundance can cause severe damage of any life form.

Notes: The methods of preparation for Bi8(AlCl4)2 and Bi6Cl7 have been improved and the single crystal structures for these cluster compounds re-investigated and re-interpreted. In addition, conductivity measurements and band structure calculations using the tight-binding approximation have been performed on Bi6Cl7 and related subvalent bismuth halides. - Bi8(AlCl4)2 consists of isolated AlCl4- anions and rather undistored square-antiprismatic Bi82+ clusters with an average Bi-Bi distance of 3.10 Å. Relatively short intercluster Bi-Bi contacts of 3.90 Å suggest weak bonding interactions between the Bi82+ units. In contrast, the structure determination of Bi6Cl7 implies that this structure should be regarded as being composed of discrete Bi95+ clusters and a polymeric BiIII-Cl anionic lattice including infinite, distorted α1[Bi2Cl24+] chains. According to the experimental and theoretical results, the Bi6X7 (X = Cl, Br) family of subvalent bismuth halide compounds are anisotropic semiconductors along the crystallographic c axis. The conductivity is mediated by the onedimensional α1[Bi2Cl24+] chains. These are interconnected with the Bi95+ clusters, which are acting as electron reservoirs. The related BiX (X = Br, I) family of subvalent bismuth halides are shown to be anisotropic semiconductors in the crystallographic b direction.

Notes: Bis(trifluoromethylketiminoalkyl)diselanes [SeC(=NR)CF3]2 (6) [R = Me (a), iPr (b), tBu (c)] have been prepared in high yields (55-70%) by reaction of the diselane (SeC2F5)2 (2) with RNH2. However, the analogous reaction of 2 with secondary amines, R2NH, results in the cleavage of the Se-Se bond and leads to the N,N-dialkyl-2,2,2-trifluoroselenoacetamides Se=C(NR2)CF3 (7) [R = Me (a), iPr (b)]. Cleavage of 6a-6c with Me3SnH affords the selenoamides Se=C(NHR)CF3 (9) and the corresponding stannylselanes Me3SnSeC(=NR)CF3 (10) [R = Me(a), iPr (b), tBu (c)]. Selenoamides 7 and 9 can also be prepared from pentafluoroethylselenol HSeC2F5 (3), Se=C(F)CF3, (1) or its polymer [SeC(F)CF3]n (4) and primary or secondary amines. N,N-dialkyl-2-methyl-3-fluoro-4,4,4-trifluoroselenoacrylamides Se=C(NR2)C(Me)=C(F)CF3[R = Et (13a), iPr (13b)] are prepared in moderate yields under mild conditions by treating either trifluoromethylselenocarbonyl fluoride (1) or its polymer [SeC(F)CF3]n with 1-dialkylamino-1-propynes. The reaction proceeds by [2 + 2] cycloaddition and stereospecific electrocyclic ring-opening, yielding, with respect to the resulting C=C double bond, the E isomer as the only product. The molecular structures of 7b, 9a and 13b show the typical features of selenoamides with C(Se)-N bond shortening and C-Se bond elongation due to π interaction of the N lone pair with the C=Se double bond. The observed perpendicular orientation of the selenoamide and the alkene units of 13b prevents π delocalization.
