Notes: 2 . In order to discuss the nanotribological effects of adsorbed water molecules and the capillary condensation of water, the lateral force images are examined quantitatively as a function of the normal load on the sample surface. Lateral force images with lattice periodicity are obtained in the same manner as atomic scale topography images. The dependence of lateral force magnitude on the normal force is found to be affected by the atmosphere around the tip and the sample.

Notes: High-quality GaAs epilayers with dislocation densities of 1.2×106 cm−2 on (100)Si substrates have been obtained by insertion of an InGaAs strained interlayer combined with thermal cycle annealing instead of strained layer superlattices. All the layers were grown by low-pressure metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy. The threading dislocation density near the surface of 4 μm thick GaAs was measured by plan-view transmission electron microscopy. The threading dislocation density was found to be very sensitive to the In composition of the interlayer and the specifics of thermal cycle annealing. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract  Rayleigh-Benard convection in two-layer systems is characterized by two distinct modes of flow coupling. These are: thermal coupling and mechanical coupling. Intellegible observations of the temperature field for both coupling mechanisms are provided. The flow coupling mechanisms are experimentally characterized as a function of the contrast in the buoyancy driving forces and in the viscosities of the two layers. Aside from the flow coupling between the layers, flow patterns in each layer, and their corresponding spatial transitions are found to be similar to those reported for single layer convection in rectangular boxes.
