Notes: Abstract A prospective observational cohort study of the angiotensin inhibitor, ramipril, was undertaken in four countries within the European Community-Netherlands, United Kingdom, Germany and Belgium. A total of 10,377 consecutive patients with essential hypertension were recruited to the study with the aim of follow-up for one year. Overall 37% of doctors who agreed to participate in the study actually enrolled at least one patient. One third of the doctors who enrolled patients in the study entered two thirds of patients studied. Some 15% of participating males and 27% of females were aged over 70 years. Newly diagnosed hypertensives comprised 22% of the study cohort, the proportion being highest in UK and Netherlands, whereas 53% were established hypertensives of two or more years' duration, the proportion being highest in Germany and Belgium. There were substantial differences among the participating countries in the concurrent treatment these patients were receiving for hypertension, with two or more co-therapies being most frequent in Germany and Belgium. There were also substantial differences in co-therapies for concurrent diseases among the participating countries, reflecting both standard therapeutic practices in local areas and differences in marketing of drugs in the different countries. This report describes the initial findings of this multinational study and emphasises the need to consider several major potentially confounding variables in the analysis of the outcome events both in this study and in other collaborative observational international monitoring schemes for adverse drug reactions.

Notes: The laccase from the fungus Coprinus cinereus has been prepared and crystallized in a form suitable for X-ray diffraction analysis. Small plate-like crystals of an enzymatically deglycosylated form of the enzyme have been grown by the hanging-drop method using polyethylene glycol as precipitant. These crystals diffract to at least 2.2 Å. They belong to the space group P212121 with cell dimensions a = 45.4, b = 85.7, c = 143.1 Å with a single molecule of laccase in the asymmetric unit.

Notes: Abstract Aerial dispersal of European red mite, Panonychus ulmi (Koch), in commercial apple orchards was estimated by trapping windborne mites. Studies were conducted at four orchards in eastern New York during 1989 and 1990 and at three orchards in western New York during 1989. In each orchard mites were trapped in three locations; the interior of the orchard, at the border of the orchard and in a field or woodlot beyond the orchard. Large numbers of mites were captured, even when the numbers of mites on apple foliage were well below levels where mite injury to leaves was visible (less than five per leaf). The log numbers of mites trapped were linearly related to the log density of mites on leaves and this relationship was consistent for each year and region the study was conducted. The trap captures among the three locations in and outside an orchard were highly correlated. The implications these findings may have on metapopulation dynamics and resistance to acaricide dynamics are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) represents one ofthe most common gastrointestinal-related diagnoses.Although the precise etiologic basis of IBS is notknown, a common presenting symptom is abdominal pain or discomfort that is thought to develop, atleast in part, from a heightened awareness of visceralnociceptive input. Agents capable of reducing thisheightened visceral nociception would, therefore, have utility in the treatment of IBS. In this studywe evaluated the effects of intravenous andintracerebroventricular administration of a5-HT3 receptor antagonist, alosetron, onblood pressure changes associated with rectal distension in anesthetized andawake dogs. This vasoactive reflex serves as a model forvisceral nociception. For intracerebroventricularstudies, the cerebroventricular guides were placed over the lateral ventricle. In anesthetized studies, blood pressure was measured by femoral arterycannulation. In awake studies, blood pressure wasmonitored by noninvasive measurement. A rectal balloonwas placed in the rectum of each dog and maintainedthroughout the experiments. Each dose of alosetron wasgiven to the dogs as an intravenous orintracerebroventricular bolus, and every 30 min therectal balloon was inflated and blood pressure responsesobserved. In both anesthetized and awake dogs alosetronproduced a significant inhibition of the vasoactivereflex. In particular, alosetron showed high potency when administered intracerebroventricularly.Alosetron, administered either centrally orperipherally, appears to modulate the visceralnociceptive effect of rectal distension indogs.

Notes: Recent work has shown that many ceramic fibres which are increasingly used to line industrial furnaces have highly spectral-dependent emissivities. This paper presents an extension to the standard zone method for radiative heat transfer calculations which directly models spectral variation in surface and gas properties. A short description of the zone method is given along with a summary of the weighted sum of grey gases model. This is often used as a means of representing the temperature dependence of total gas properties brought about because of the spectral non-uniformity of these properties. When surfaces as well as the gas are non-grey, a new approach is required. The method of this paper is based on dividing the spectrum into a number of bands and treating the properties as constant within each band. This method can be used directly if the boundary conditions specify all the zone temperatures. However, if some temperatures are unknown, then an iterative solution technique is required. Results of some sample calculations are presented. These illustrate the importance of directly modelling the spectral behaviour of gas and surface properties. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
