    Notes: Abstract How does the spatio-temporal structure of an oscillating radial optical flow affect postural stability? In order to investigate this problem, two different types of stimulus pattern were presented to human subjects. These stimuli were generated either with a constant spatial frequency or with a spatial frequency gradient providing monocular depth cues. When the stimulation was set in motion, the gain response of the antero-posterior postural changes depended upon the oscillation frequency of the visual scene. The amplitude of the postural response did not change with the amplitude of the visual scene motion. The spatial orientation of the postural sway (major axis of sway) depended strictly and solely on the structure of the visual scene. In static conditions, depth information resulting from the presence of a spatial frequency gradient enhanced postural stability. When set in motion, a visual scene with a spatial frequency gradient induced an organization of postural sway in the direction of the visual motion. Considering visual dynamic cues, postural instability depended linearly both on the logarithm of the velocity and on the logarithm of the temporal frequency. A nonlinear relationship existed between the amplitude of the fore-aft postural sway at the driving frequency and the temporal frequency, with a peak around 2–4 Hz. These results are discussed in terms of their implications for the separation of visual and biomechanical factors influencing visuo-postural control.

    Notes: The processing of 232 common carp Cyprinus carpio made it possible to study the correlation between gonad maturation and filleting yield. The study was undertaken between April and August 1992 and was carried out on 4-year-old carp cultured in extensive ponds. Morphological parameters were recorded and relations between total weight and length, biomass of fillet, and biomass of gonad were determined. The histology of male and female gonads was examined in relation to the gonadosomatic index (GSI: up to 16% for females and less than 11% for males) and condition indices (total K or somatic K1). Filleting yields (32–36% of the total weight) decreased for females just prior to spawning and corresponded to a decline of K1. A rematuration phenomenon was observed, although females weighing less than 1200g were still immature. We suggest avoiding the filleting of large females before spawning and suggest estimating the date of appearance of this stage by referring to the positive correlation established in this paper between the number of degree-days and total fish weight.

    Notes: Experiments were performed to test the growth and survival of perch larvae fed with Artemia spp. nauplii and to determine the most advantageous time of first feeding. During a first experiment, perch larvae were divided into groups according to their hatching dates. Daily ingestion of Artemia spp. nauplii began significantly 2 days after mass larvae hatching. By day 7, the daily prey acceptance was over 75% among the separate larvae groups. During a second 14-day feeding experiment, larvae fed after a 2- or a 3-day delay showed the best growths: 12.5 mm and 13.7 mg. There was no significant difference (P 〉 0.05) among survival rates (85.3%) of perch larvae fed after a 1-, 2- or 3-day delay.

    Notes: The Eurasian perch Perca fluviatilis larviculture can be divided into three major areas: the ontogeny of the digestive system, the nutritional requirements and, the growth, production and cannibalism in different culture systems. Ontogeny of digestive system of larvae and juveniles, i.e., the morphological and histological characteristics of the digestive system (including the digestive tract, liver, pancreas and pyloric caeca), is described from hatching up to 1-month-old. Preliminary data on proteolytic activities (pepsin, trypsin and chymotrypsin) during larval growth and weaning on dry diet are also provided. The effects of diet (type of live prey, live food vs. dry or mixed diet) on survival and growth of perch are compared and discussed. In many perch larvae, mouth size constitutes a limiting factor to an optimal utilization of Artemia nauplii from hatching onwards. However, this diet can support satisfactory survival and growth in larger larvae, usually obtained from large breeders. Although perch larvae ingest dry food after yolk sac absorption, survival and growth rates are very low at that stage, compared with results obtained with live food and mixed diet. Weaning experiments performed at different larval and juvenile body weights demonstrated that fish can be trained to accept and to use a dry diet efficiently as a unique food supply starting at 50 mg. Some data related to the nutritional requirements (feeding level, dietary protein, fatty acids) of perch larvae are provided. Juvenile production in different culture conditions (fertilized ponds, green water tanks, recirculated system) indicated that the optimal system for the production of weaned fry was the semiintensive one. In this method, combining an enhanced production of natural plankton and a regular supply of Artemia nauplii and dry food after 44 days of rearing, survival rate varied from 9.2 to 38.6% and body weight from 350 to 950 mg, depending on temperature and stocking densities (400–4000 eyed eggs m−2).
