Notes: We investigate the shielding of superconducting and μ-metal forms in axial and transverse directed background magnetic noise fields. Analytical expressions are obtained for the improvement in signal-to-noise ratio obtained by placing a superconducting disk in the presence of a dipole source and a uniform noise field. Axial and transverse shielding factors are then compared for identical superconducting and μ-metal cylinders. The signal-to-noise ratio is found to be infinite at certain points inside a superconducting cylinder as well as a superconducting cylinder with a central partition. Shielding factors obtained here are relevant to SQUID measurements of small dipole source fields in the presence of large background noise fields such as those encountered in biomagnetism and nondestructive evaluation. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report on the microwave properties of Nd0.67Sr0.33MnO3−x (NSMO) and NSMO/YBa2Cu3O7−x thin film heterostructures. The quality factor (Q) and center frequency of a 13 GHz shielded dielectric cavity resonator, with the film comprising one surface, were measured as functions of temperature and direct current magnetic field. The Q versus field data was theoretically simulated using the Landau–Lifschitz–Gilbert dynamic permeability equation thus demonstrating that the microwave losses are determined by the ferromagnetic properties of the films. Our results indicate that the field-dependent permeability μ(B) of NSMO films holds the potential to create magnetically tunable microwave devices. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report on the development of a scanning eddy-current imaging system designed to detect deep subsurface flaws in conducting materials. A high transition temperature (high-Tc) superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer is employed to provide the required sensitivity at low frequencies, while a combination of small cylindrical high-Tc superconducting and μ-metal shields enable the instrument to be scanned in a magnetically noisy environment, rather than the object under test. The shields are arranged to prevent unwanted excitation and ambient noise fields from reaching the SQUID, and to enhance spatial resolution and minimize undesirable edge effects. Thus far, the instrument has successfully detected cracks and pits through 10 layers of aluminum, with a combined thickness of 5 cm at room temperature. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Diffuse pulmonary uptake of both technetium-99m-labeled methylene diphosphonate (99mTc-MDP) and gallium (67Ga) citrate was noted in a patient with chronic renal failure and indicated the presence of pulmonary calcinosis. The uptake of67Ga could be misinterpreted to represent abnormal uptake due to an opportunistic infection.

Notes: Abstract In infants with recurrent vomiting, and especially bilious vomiting, the algorithmic approach is to perform conventional barium upper gastrointestinal radiography to rule out malrotation and midgut volvulus, which are surgical emergencies. However, children with protracted vomiting and failure to thrive are candidates for medical treatment. These children are often evaluated by radionuclide gastric emptying studies to assess gastric emptying. Three patients are presented in whom the radionuclide gastric emptying study revealed the presence of a malrotation anomaly which had been undetected by antecedent barium gastrointestinal radiographic studies.

Notes: Abstract The properties of a one-dimensional 0-π-Josephson junction, consiting of ans-d junction or selected boundaries between three suitably orientedd-wave superconductors, are studied. It is shown that ad-wave type interference pattern can only be observed in the field-modulated critical current if the junction is short compared to the Josephson penetration depth. However, the behavior of a 0-π junction is found to be indistinguishable from that of a 0-junction betweens-wave superconductors in the long junction limit, due to the formation of a π-vortex.

Notes: Abstract We have developed a new method of probing superconducting pairing state symmetry, by using tricrystal devices analogous tos-d corner junctions. Two central peaks are observed in the field-modulated critical currents of frustrated YBCO tricrystal junctions operating in the short junction limit, consistent with predominantly $$d_{x^2 - y^2 } $$ — wave pairing symmetry with little or no imaginarys-wave component. However, our results are consistent with a real combination of larged-wave and smalls-wave components. A single peak is also observed for frustrated tricrystal junctions operating in the long junction limit, and it is shown theoretically that the behaviors ofs- andd-wave superconductors are indistinguishable in this limit.

Although non-endemic Burkitt lymphoma rarely involves the breasts, their evaluation should be included when assessing a chest computed tomogram (CT).

Notes: Abstract At 23 months of age, one of a pair of monozygotic twins with radiographic unilateral hyperlucent lung was evaluated by radionuclide ventilation/perfusion pulmonary studies, which revealed a ventilation/perfusion mismatch of an entire lung. This twin died, and autopsy revealed pulmonary arterial thrombosis and histological changes compatible with homocystinuria, which was subsequently shown to be present in the surviving twin as well. A ventilation/perfusion lung scan of the surviving twin revealed multiple ventilation/perfusion mismatched defects, suggestive of pulmonary embolism. The presenting manifestation of homocystinuria in these patients was the pulmonary thrombotic disease. Neither twin had any other stigmata of homocystinuria at the time of initial presentation.

Notes: Summary A liquid chromatography method for analysis of phenoxymethylpenicillin has been examined in a collaborative study involving 6 laboratories. The method comprised an isocratic part, which is used in the assay. When the isocratic part is combined with gradient elution, the method is suitable for purity control. Five samples of phenoxymethylpenicillin (potassium salts and acid) were analysed. The main component, the most important side product 4-hydroxyphenoxymethyl-penicillin and other impurities were determined. An analysis of variance proved the absence of consistent laboratory bias. Laboratory-sample interaction was not significant. Estimates of the repeatability and reproducibility of the method, expressed as standard deviations (SD) of the result of the determination of phenoxymethylpenicillin, were 0.50 and 0.63 respectively.
