    Notes: The anomalous attenuation length of the laser light due to the ion-acoustic decay instability (IADI) can be much smaller than the instability width with a relatively weak laser intensity (Iλ2∼1014 W μm2/cm2) in a large-scale plasma. An instability width of only a few laser wavelengths is sufficient to absorb most of the laser energy. Two-dimensional electromagnetic computer simulation results and experimental results are consistent with strong absorption by the IADI. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have measured and analyzed the second harmonic emission, both in the plane of the laser electric field and perpendicular to it, at several angles near 135° from the laser wave vector. The experiments used from 1 to 80 J of 1.053 μm light to irradiate carbon–hydrogen (CH) targets with a 550 ps pulse. A random phase plate was used, producing characteristic intensities in the range of 1013–1014 W/cm2. This was sufficient to drive the Ion Acoustic Decay Instability, producing Stokes emission well-separated from the emission spike at the second harmonic of the laser frequency. The spectral structure of the Stokes emission was qualitatively similar for all intensities and angles of observation. The duration of the signals showed trends anticipated from linear theory. To explain the scaling of the signal strength and spectral width requires nonlinear theory. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A large angle, multichannel ultraviolet Thomson scattering diagnostic was developed to study ion-acoustic waves in laser-produced high-density plasma. The time evolution of the spectral density function of the ion-acoustic wave (IAW) was measured by the scattering system. When a weak IAW was excited, the measured spectrum had a well-defined narrow peak, which was consistent with plasma parameters predicted by computer simulations assuming an electron transport flux limit of 0.1. The spectrum of the IAW was quite different, and broad, when it was excited strongly. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report a new case of multiple minute digitate hyperkeratoses after postmastectomy irradiation therapy for mammary cancer. This is the first case of multiple minute digitate hyperkeratoses in an Asian country as well as the third report of the disorder after irradiation. The characteristic eruption, the consistent trigger of irradiation and its occurrence in patients of different racial groups indicate that multiple minute digitate hyperkeratoses are a distinct clinical entity.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) on the healing of partial anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) lacerations was investigated in 17 adult mongrel canines. The defect was created in the midsubstance of both ACLs using a biopsy punch. In the bFGF group, a bFGF-impregnated pellet was sutured to the infrapatellar fat pad close to the defect. In the control group, the same pellet without bFGF was used. The healing process was evaluated macroscopically and histologically at 1, 3, 6, and 24 weeks postoperatively. In the bFGF group, a pannus-like tissue which contained abundant blood vessels extended into the defect from the adjacent synovial tissue in the early postoperative phase. Histological examination of the tissue which filled the defect revealed initial remodeling processes with a decreased number of cells and better orientation of the collagen fibers at 6–24 weeks. On the other hand, in the control group, poor healing processes were observed at each examination period. This study demonstrated that the application of a bFGF-impregnated pellet may enhance the healing potential of a partially injured ACL. Enhanced neovascularization and the formation of granulation tissue induced by bFGF early in the healing process accounted for the increased healing response.

    Notes: Summary.  A chimpanzee was immunized with two recombinant envelope glycoproteins E1 and E2 of hepatitis C virus (HCV), strain HCV-N2, and the hypervariable region 1 (HVR1) peptides of a different isolate, HCV-#6, then received an intravenous inoculation of 10 chimpanzee infectious doses of HCV-#6. With high humoral immune response against E1 and E2 but a low response against HVR1, the vaccinee became infected with the HCV. However, after increasing the titer of anti-HVR1 against HCV-#6, the vaccinee showed protection. Neutralization of HCV-#6 with the antiserum from this protected vaccinee was achieved by inoculation of this mixture into another chimpanzee. These results suggest that vaccination with a peptide-vaccine of homologous HVR1 is effective in the chimpanzee.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé. L’angle de rotation du genou arthrosique pendant l’appui pas été entièrement expliqué. Les auteurs ont ètudié la rotation de l’articulation du genou par ultrasons. Il existe une corrélation très significative entre l’angle de rotation mesuré aux ultrasons et par tomodensitométrie. Le mouvement rotatoire dynamique pendant l’appui fut mesuré dans 107 gonarthroses et 40 genoux témoins. A une flexion de 20°, la rotation interne des genoux souffrant d’une arthrose de la classe I initiale fut significativement plus faible que celle des genoux témoins (−4.8°, P=0.004). Cette anomalie de rotation ètait la modification pathologique initiale. La rotation externe lors d’une extension maximale et la rotation du mouvement vissé a proportionnellement diminué avec la progression de l’arthrose du compartiment interne. Nous avons donc éclairci le mouvement de rotation dynamique des genous arthrosiques pendant l’appui.
    Notes: Summary. The angle of rotation of the knee joint during weight-bearing in osteoarthritic knees has not been fully determined. The authors aimed to examine the nature and extent of rotation during weight-bearing by means of ultrasonic investigation. There was a highly significant correlation between the rotational angle measured by ultrasound and that determined by CT. The dynamic rotatory movement during weight-bearing was measured in 107 osteoarthritic and 40 control knees. At 20° of flexion the internal rotation of the early grade I osteoarthritic knees (−1.6°) was significantly less than that of the control knees (−4.8°, P=0.004). This abnormality was the initial pathological rotational change in osteoarthritis of the knee joint. The external rotation at maximal extension and the rotation of the screw-home movement proportionately decreased with progression of medial compartment osteoarthritis. By virtue of these observations we have clarified the dynamic rotatory movement in osteoarthritic knees during weight-bearing.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé   Ils évaluent prospectivement la précision diagnostique de cinq différentes épreuves cliniques employées pour confirmer des déchirures méniscales chez des 160 sujets ayant subi une évaluation arthroscopique. Soixante–neuf pour cent (109) des genoux contrôlés par les auteurs présentaient une carence arthrocinétique complexe. Ils ont observé 144 déchirures méniscales sur 130 genoux. Toutes les épreuves cliniques présentaient généralement une sensibilité inférieure à leur spécificité. Quant au test de déplacement du pivot sous charge axiale, le fait que sa valeur diagnostique est, dans l’ensemble, significativement supérieure à celle des autres manoeuvres diagnostiques en fait un supplément de choix dans l’arsenal diagnostique.
    Notes: Abstract  Although magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has improved the diagnostic accuracy of meniscal pathology, the authors believe that physical examination remains essential to the evaluation of knee pathology. In this study, the diagnostic accuracy of five clinical tests for meniscal pathology was prospectively evaluated in 160 patients, who thereafter underwent arthroscopy. 69% (109 knees) of the knees tested had associated ACL deficiency. There were 144 meniscal lesions in 130 of the 160 knees which were examined. The sensitivity of the tests was lower than the specificity. Conventional tests such as McMurray and Apley tests showed a low accuracy rate of 45% and 28% respectively. The diagnostic value of the axially loaded pivot shift test was significantly higher, indicating that this remains a useful diagnostic aid.

    Notes: Abstract The present study was undertaken to investigate whether neural activity of hippocampal slices can be preserved after replacingd-glucose with glycolytic intermediate metabolites such as lactate, pyruvate and citrate or with other sugars such as fructose, mannose, maltose, glucosamine, sucrose and galactose. As an index of neural activity, population spikes (PS) were recorded in the granule cell layers after electrical stimulation to the perforant path of guinea pig hippocampal slices. In addition, we determined the levels of ATP and creatine phosphate (CrP) in each slice after the replacement ofd-glucose with these substrates, and correlated it with the neural activity. Substrates other thand-glucose could not maintain the PS for even 20 min although the slices perfused with medium containing lactate, pyruvate, galactose, fructose and maltose maintained similar levels of ATP and CrP as in slices incubated in thed-glucose-containing medium. These results indicate thatd-glucose is essential for the preservation of synaptic activity in addition to its main role as the substrate for energy production to maintain the levels of high energy phosphates.
