    Notes: Polarised two-photon excitation (TPE) spectroscopy is a powerful technique for probing the energy levels of f-block elements at high symmetry sites because most pure electronic transitions are allowed by the selection rules. TPE in a magnetic field provides additional information, through the resolution of Zeeman components, evaluation of g-values, and the appearance of intensity in forbidden transitions. Here we present the selection rules and polarisation dependence for two-photon absorption at cubic sites, in a magnetic field. Polarised TPE spectra for the elpasolites Cs2NaTbX6 (X=F, Cl) are in excellent agreement with theory. The sensitivity of the second order Zeeman effect to the orientation of a cubic crystal relative to the magnetic field is illustrated, together with successful modelling of the Zeeman interaction for a number of multiplets. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The effect of litter quality and climate on the rate of decomposition of plant tissues was examined by the measurement of mass remaining after 3 years’ exposure of 11 litter types placed at 18 forest sites across Canada. Amongst sites, mass remaining was strongly related to mean annual temperature and precipitation and amongst litter types the ratio of Klason lignin to nitrogen in the initial tissue was the most important litter quality variable. When combined into a multiple regression, mean annual temperature, mean annual precipitation and Klason lignin:nitrogen ratio explained 73% of the variance in mass remaining for all sites and tissues. Using three doubled CO2 GCM climate change scenarios for four Canadian regions, these relationships were used to predict increases in decomposition rate of 4–7% of contemporary rates (based on mass remaining after 3 years), because of increased temperature and precipitation. This increase may be partially offset by evidence that plants growing under elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations produce litter with high lignin:nitrogen ratios which slows the rate of decomposition, but this change will be small compared to the increased rate of decomposition derived from climatic changes.

    Notes: The origin of spurious and irreproducible signals in the measurement of the hyper-Rayleigh scattering (HRS) of solutions is investigated. A new cell design, coupled with continuous solution filtration through a 20 nm filter, is shown to improve the reproducibility of the measurement to ±5%. A transverse cell dimension of ∼2 mm reduces absorption of the second harmonic. A simple monochromaticity test is used to identify luminescence, and we recommend that it is made routinely. Scattering from the [Ru(bipy)3]2+ cation, attributed to HRS by Zyss et al. [Chem. Phys. Lett. 206, 409 (1993)], appears to be largely due to two-photon excited luminescence. The reliability of calibration procedures is examined, and some revised hyperpolarizabilities are reported. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract. The management of 38 consecutive patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma in the period 1991–1996, who each received at least one therapy dose of iodine-131, was reviewed, looking in particular at those in whom anterior mediastinal uptake was demonstrated on scans taken 3 and 7 days post-therapy. Such activity was noted in ten patients. On the basis of clinical follow-up, thyroglobulin measurement and radiological and other scintigraphic imaging, in nine of the ten patients the anterior mediastinal activity was attributed to physiological thymic uptake. Of those nine, all were under 50 years of age; seven were considered disease free, one had residual disease in the neck and one had distant metastases. Physiological uptake by the thymus was more prominent on the 7-day scans and in patients with low tumour volumes. For appropriate patient management it is essential to recognise that physiological uptake of 131I by the thymus in patients under 50 years of age is a potential cause of false-positive therapy scans.
