Notes: Recombinant Brassica oleracea histidinol dehydrogenase (HDH) has been crystallized in various space groups using the method of vapour diffusion. The presence or absence of inhibitors and substrates as well as the use of different precipitants has enabled the growth of five different crystal forms. Extensive searches with the first crystal form (A) failed to produce any useful heavy-atom derivatives, mainly because of the instability of the crystals. This provoked the search for further crystal forms in the hope of finding more suitable crystals. At least two of these crystal forms are of interest for further study.

Notes: Abstract. To determine whether functional atypical β-adrenoceptors (β3-adrenoceptors) are present in pulmonary vascular smooth muscle, we studied isolated canine pulmonary arterial rings under isometric conditions in vitro. Addition of β-adrenoceptor agonists produced a concentration-dependent relaxation of noradrenaline-precontracted tissues, a rank order potency being isoproterenol (1) 〉 salbutamol (0.95) 〉 selective β3-adrenoceptor agonists, CL 316243 (0.85), and BRL 37344 (0.83). A marked desensitization to salbutamol occurred by pretreatment with salbutamol but not with CL 316243. When β1-adrenoceptors had been blocked, the relaxant responses to salbutamol were competitively antagonized by the β2-adrenoceptor antagonist ICI 118551 with a pA2 value of 7.67 ± 0.21 (mean ± S.E.), but the response to CL 316243 was weekly antagonized by ICI 118551 only at a high concentration of 10−5 M, where an apparent pA2 value was 5.24. In contrast, cyanopindolol, a nonselective β-adrenoceptor antagonist, antagonized CL 316243–induced relaxation in a competitive manner with a pA2 of 6.10 ± 0.11. This pA2 value was lower than that when salbutamol was used as an agonist (6.69 ± 0.14, p 〈 0.01). Intracellular 3′,5′-cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) levels were increased by CL 316243 in a concentration-dependent fashion, an effect that was not altered by ICI 118551. These results suggest that β3-adrenoceptors may exist in canine pulmonary artery smooth muscle and that stimulation of this atypical receptor causes vasodilation through a cAMP-dependent pathway.

Notes: Abstract A 43-year-old Japanese male vagrant collapsed suddenly in a police station. The man was resuscitated in hospital but died about 13 h later. An autopsy revealed necrotizing fasciitis in the genitalia and lower abdominal wall. The man was considered to have died from endotoxic shock following on Fournier’s gangrene.

Notes: Abstract Solid products were prepared from mixtures of zirconyl carbonate and sulphuric acid solution under thermal hydrolysis at 240°C. These crystalline products and their formation mechanism were investigated by evaluating the amount of products, and by X-ray diffraction analysis and TEM observation. The solid products precipitated were zirconium oxide sulphates (ZOS, PZOS, ZrOSO4·H2O) and m-ZrO2. The area and thickness of the fine plate-like crystals of ZOS increased with increasing concentration of the solution and hydrothermal treatment time. For thin starting solutions, the precipitation velocity and the amount of PZOS increased. For thick starting solutions, those of ZOS increased. For 0.5 mol/l−1 ZrOSO4 solution (ZS0.5) from the thin solution, PZOS crystallized early and m-ZrO2 crystallized by releasing sulphuric acid ions in PZOS with treatment time. For ZS2.5 from the thick solution, ZrOSO4·H2O was crystallized by increasing the proportion of sulphuric acid ions to zirconium ions in the solution, which was caused by ZOS precipitation.

Notes: Abstract Population data were generated for the STR systems HUMFIBRA and HUMD21S11 for a Hungarian Caucasian population sample residing in Baranya County, Hungary (127 unrelated individuals). The loci were co-amplified using a fluorescence based PCR method and were typed automatically. For both loci 12 different alleles could be found including some variants. No deviations from Hardy-Weinberg expectations were observed. Both loci proved to be highly discriminating and valuable polymorphisms for forensic analyses.

Notes: Abstract Several kinds of metastable compounds, pseudo zirconium oxide sulphates (PZOS) with a chemical composition of Zr3O5SO4·nH2O, were previously synthesized by the thermal hydrolysis of solutions containing zirconium sulphate at 200 or 240°C. The obtained PZOS samples were again hydrothermally treated in different sulphuric acid solutions (〈1.0 mol l-1) at 240°C, and their hydrothermal decomposition behaviour was investigated by TEM observation. The PZOS samples mostly crystallized to plate-like zirconium oxide sulphate (ZOS) in the concentrated sulphuric acid solution (〉0.5 mol l-1), but long-whiskered monoclinic ZrO2 crystals grew with decomposition of the PZOS samples obtained from the starting mixtures with added Zr(OH)4 when rapidly heated to the hydrothermal treatment temperatures. It was found that many ultrafine monoclinic ZrO2 crystals were simultaneously formed during the hydrothermal preparation of the PZOS samples, and during the following hydrothermal decomposition of the PZOS samples, the whiskered crystals of monoclinic ZrO2 grew with the consumption of PZOS from the coexisting ultrafine monoclinic ZrO2 particles which act as seed crystals.
