Notes: Abstract. Background: The purpose of this multi-institutional study was to examine the appearance of struma ovarii on magnetic resonance (MR) images. Methods: MR images of 12 patients with histologically proven struma ovarii were retrospectively reviewed. All patients underwent T1-weighted and T2-weighted imaging. Contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images with Gd-DTPA were available in 10 patients. The following determinations were made: tumor morphology, signal intensities, contrast-enhancement effects of solid components with Gd-DTPA, and comparison of MR images with resected specimens. Results: All 12 patients had both cystic and solid components, with a multilobulated surface and thickened septa. Signal intensities on T1-weighted images were mainly low, partly intermediate to high, or high, and those on T2-weighted images were mainly high, with different signal intensities. Contrast-enhancement effects were marked or moderate. The contents that showed low signal intensities on T1-weighted images and signal voids or low signal intensities on T2-weighted images were viscid gelatinous materials. Conclusions: A multicystic tumor with a solid component, a multilobulated surface, and signal intensities that indicate the presence of viscid gelatinous materials appear to be a characteristic MR finding of struma ovarii.

Notes: Abstract In order to determine whether there is a difference in the effect of the hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitor pravastatin on cholesterol synthesis between the morning and the evening, we studied the 24-h profile of mevalonate in plasma and urine in 11 subjects with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia. In study 1, eight subjects with familial hypercholesterolaemia took pravastatin (20 mg) once in the morning, and another 20-mg dose in the evening after a 1-week wash-out period. In study 2, five subjects with familial hypercholesterolaemia took pravastatin (20 mg per day) in the morning on 3 consecutive days and on 3 days in the evening after a 1 day wash-out. Plasma mevalonate concentrations were reduced at 9 h and 5 h after pravastatin administration in the morning and the evening, respectively. Urinary mevalonate excretion was significantly reduced at 4–8 h after pravastatin administration in the morning (51 vs 19 nmol ⋅h−1) and at 4–16 h after pravastatin administration in the evening (56 vs 27 nmol ⋅h−1). Daily urinary mevalonate excretion was equally and significantly reduced by pravastatin in the morning or evening. In conclusion, we found that morning and evening administration of pravastatin caused equal reductions in plasma and urinary mevalonate concentrations.

Notes: Summary The purpose of this study was to characterize regional blood flow (BF) in untreated cerebral gliomas (CG) using stable Xe-enhanced computed tomography (XeCT). XeCT of 38 patients with untreated CG were analyzed and compared with CT and magnetic resonance images (MRI) and histopathological findings. Individual averaged BF values for tumour in 29 high grade gliomas (HGGs) and 9 low grade gliomas (LGGs) were intermediate between averaged BF values for cortex and white matter in the non-tumour bearing hemisphere. All averaged BF values for cyst and central necrosis were very low. In 27 HGGs, BF in tumour was relatively high in ring-enhancement lesions on CT and MRI, but was low even in viable tumour centers showing no contrast enhancement. In the other 2 HGGs, BF was low in tumour center and relatively high in tumour periphery regardless of homogeneous enhancement. In 5 HGGs, averaged BF value of the cortex outside surrounding oedema was higher than that of cortex in the non-tumour bearing hemisphere. In LGGs, BF distribution in tumour was homogeneously low in 3 small-sized and heterogeneous in 6 large-sized lesions including moderately high and low BF regions. These differences in BF pattern between HGGs and LGGs on XeCT might be helpful in considering to some extent the histopathology of untreated cerebral glioma pre-operatively.

Notes: Summary We investigated the role of plasminogen activators (PAs) and their inhibitor (plasminogen activator inhibitor-1, PAI-1) in human brain tumours. The amounts of urokinase-type plasminogen activator (u-PA), tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA), and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), and the activity of u-PA and t-PA were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and u-PA and PAI-1 were immunolocalized using monoclonal antibodies in human brain tumours and normal brain tissues. The tissues were surgically removed from 64 patients; normal brain tissue (5 cases), low-grade glioma (4 cases), high-grade glioma (17 cases), metastatic tumour (9 cases), meningioma (benign 12 cases, malignant 6 cases), acoustic schwannoma (11 cases). u-PA activity and u-PA and PAI-1 antigen levels were significantly elevated in malignant brain tumours (malignant meningiomas, high-grade gliomas, and metastatic tumours) and acoustic schwannomas but very low in benign meningiomas, low-grade gliomas and normal brain. There was no difference in t-PA antigen levels among normal and malignant tissues, however levels of t-PA activity were markedly decreased in metastastic tumours. All malignant brain tumour tissues showed positive immunostaining for u-PA and PAI-1, however, some tumour cells showed negative intensity while others showed strong intensity for these antibodies. This contrasts to the homogeneous staining pattern found in acoustic schwannoma. These findings indicate that malignancy in human brain tumours is associated with elevated levels of u-PA and PAI-1 and that an imbalance between these proteins in a micro-enviroment contributes (ascribes) to tumour cell invasion.

Notes: A new type of variable-frequency radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) linac has been constructed as a new preinjector for the RIKEN heavy-ion linac (RILAC). The RFQ resonator, based on a folded-coaxial structure with a movable shorting plate, is compact even in a low frequency region below 20 MHz. It accelerates ions with mass-to-charge ratios of 5.3 to 26.4 in the energy range up to 450 keV per charge, by varying its resonant frequency from 17.4 to 39.0 MHz. Moreover, the power loss is small in the low frequency region; the rf power consumption in cw mode is 7 kW at 17.4 MHz, and it increases to 30 kW at 39.0 MHz at the maximum intervane voltage of 36.8 kV. We initiated this project in 1991, and installed the new preinjector consisting of an electron cyclotron resonance ion source of 18 GHz and this RFQ in 1996. Since the installation, the beam intensity has become larger by more than 1 order of magnitude than that formerly obtained with the Cockcroft–Walton preinjector. Recently, the maximum power of the beam extracted from the RILAC and that from the ring cyclotron has reached 560 W and 2 kW, respectively. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The use of anodic oxidation as a post-treatment of porous silicon has been investigated to enhance the external quantum efficiency of electroluminescence from a device based on a thin transparent indium tin oxide contact on porosified n+-type silicon. Enhancement in external quantum efficiency of three orders of magnitude has been obtained. We report here an external quantum efficiency of 0.21%. The treatment also greatly improves the stability of the device. Results can be explained by the fact that anodic oxidation considerably reduces leakage current flowing via nonconfined silicon. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We successfully produced intense beams of highly charged metallic ions from various kinds of organic metallic compounds by the metal ions from volatile compounds method and solid materials in RIKEN 18 GHz electron cyclotron resonance ion source (ECRIS) (e.g., 135 eμA of Fe11+, 80 eμA of Fe13+, 10 eμA of Os29+, and 1 eμA of Os37+). Using this ECRIS the ion confinement time of highly charged ions was determined under the pulsed mode operation. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A compact storage ring has been developed for industrial research such as x-ray lithography and material analysis. This machine is of a racetrack type with two superconducting bending magnets and only two normal conducting quadrupole magnets. The circumference is as short as 9.2 m. One quadrupole magnet per cell contributes to making the smaller machine. The injector is a synchrotron, and a full energy injection of 600 MeV is performed. The bending magnets excite a field of 3.5 T, and are operated in a persistent current mode. A decrease in a coil current is ΔI/I〈3×10−3/year. The helium consumption is as low as 2 l/h for two magnets. An iron shield of the magnet decreases a leakage flux to a terrestrial level at a point 3 m from the magnet. A beam current of 380 mA has been stored with no beam instability in spite of there being no correction of the chromaticities. Beam emittances were obtained from measured beam sizes and were in good agreement with calculated values. The coupling coefficient εy/εx is calculated as around 0.04. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
