Notizen: Explicit analytic expressions for the lobe structures of the critical current versus magnetic field are provided for small arbitrarily shaped four-sided Josephson junctions. The orientation of the external parallel magnetic field, in the plane of the junction, is also arbitrary. Several configurations worth noting are considered in detail for rhomboid, triangle, parallelogram, and trapezium junctions, once the dependence from the normalized magnetic field has been introduced. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A new geometrical configuration for superconductive tunnel junctions as high energy resolution particle detectors is presented. The proposed configuration is based on annular junctions, in which fluxons are trapped in the central hole during the superconducting transition. Such a configuration overcomes some important drawbacks of the traditional geometries. The suppression of the Josephson critical current by a magnetic field that does not need to be sustained during the whole detection time and the absence of Fiske steps, which compromise the stability of the bias point, are automatically reached with the new configuration. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The efficiency of the charge collecting mechanism of a radiation detector based on superconducting tunnel junctions depends strongly on the competition between tunneling and losses of quasiparticles in the electrodes of the junction. In this article we discuss the loss of quasiparticles, both in the bulk and at the edges of the electrodes. The quasiparticle loss taking place during their diffusion in the junction limits the amount of charge carriers tunneling and thereby the energy resolution of the detector. A charge amplification process caused by multiple tunneling of quasiparticles is beneficial to higher signal to noise ratios. Such multiple tunneling is always present in the case of junctions based on symmetrical electrodes. In this article we present a theory for the detector response which takes into account both multiple tunneling and the diffusion of quasiparticles. A model is presented for the spectral response of the detector based on four parameters one of which is the degree of back-tunneling present in the device. Analytical solutions of the model for rectangular and circular junctions are discussed. The predictions of the theory are compared with an experimental pulse height spectrum obtained on a Nb/Al2O3/Nb junction. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We report on experimental results about Josephson junctions for radiation detection with an annular geometry. The observed suppression of the critical Josephson current and the presence of one single resonance step in the current–voltage characteristic, as predicted by the theory, strongly support the idea that this geometry could be very convenient for radiation detection. The results were obtained when one single magnetic fluxon was trapped in the central hole, and they represent the first experimental confirmation of the theoretical predictions in the case of annular junctions with finite ring width. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Measurements of temperature dependence of the return current in high quality Nb/AlOx/Nb Josephson junctions are presented. From the experimental data, we obtain the effective resistance, i.e., the effective dissipation, for the retrapping process, according to the generalized resistively shunted junction model proposed by Chen, Fisher, and Leggett. We present a careful analysis, based on a comparison between the measured temperature dependencies of both the return and the quasiparticle tunneling current. We find that the junction subgap conductance, which includes the quasiparticle and the quasiparticle-pair interference terms, is responsible for the return process. The measurements have been performed on various samples, in a wide range of critical current densities from 50 to 2250 A/cm2, covering different damping regimes and spanning over the high and low temperature limits. Junctions with low critical current density show ideal dissipation which makes the return current scale with temperature according to the BCS exponential behavior without flattening out effects. This result may be relevant for the possible use of Nb/AlOx/Nb junctions in macroscopic quantum coherence experiments, which strongly require a very low dissipation. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Summary In the framework of the hydrodynamic approximation, we study the Langmuir oscillations of an ion density ripple background plasma under the influence of a single external harmonic r.f. field. An analytic frequency response curve is derived for the late-time behaviour exhibiting multistability and hysteresis.

Notizen: Abstract The contribution to the tunneling current of a Josephson junction from the Two-particle tunneling, to the 2nd order approximation in the barrier transparency, is investigated. Expressions for the current onset amplitudes corresponding to eV = Δ1,2 are given together with the full expressions for the voltage and the temperature dependencies of the two-particles current. The theory has ben developed to take also into account corrections due to depairing mechanisms, which lead to the smearing of the current singularities. Introducing a depairing parameter Γ, which accounts for the probability of these processes, I–V curves in the voltage region of the onset of single and two particle current are obtained. It is shown that, though having the same functional dependence, spreading occurs over a voltage range of different widths. In particular, it is shown that the width of the single-particle structure is twice larger the one for the two-particle. A careful investigation of the I–V curves in the region 2 Δ-eV ≪ Δ is presented and some aspects of the interesting voltage region near ¦Δ1-Δ2¦ is discussed.

Notizen: Abstract We consider the effects of the junction geometry in view of the requirements imposed by a possible use of Josephson tunnel junctions as nuclear detectors. The magnetic field dependence of the critical-current of rhombus shaped junctions has been investigated both experimentally and theoretically.
