Notes: Abstract A series of electrorheological fluids (ERFs) based on silica gel particles and various liquid phases with different dielectric constants were prepared. The spatial arrangements (patterns) formed as a function of applied electric field were studied and their possible origins were considered in the light of current knowledge. In terms of spatial arrangement, the results produced a picture far more complicated than previously reported.
