Notes: The Manev problem (a two-body problem given by a potential of the form A/r+B/r2, where r is the distance between particles and A,B are positive constants) comprises several important physical models, having its roots in research done by Isaac Newton. We provide its analytic solution, then completely describe its global flow using McGehee coordinates and topological methods, and offer the physical interpretation of all solutions. We prove that if the energy constant is negative, the orbits are, generically, precessional ellipses, except for a zero-measure set of initial data, for which they are ellipses. For zero energy, the orbits are precessional parabolas, and for positive energy they are precessional hyperbolas. In all these cases, the set of initial data leading to collisions has positive measure. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary The thermal and viscoelastic behaviour of several copolymers of propene and 1-hexene have been studied in a wide range of compositions. The samples were prepared with a Ziegler-Natta catalyst with both internal and external donors. A significant amount of crystallinity has been found for the sample with a comonomer content as high as 19 mol %. The dynamic mechanical results show a considerable decrease of the storage modulus in the copolymers in relation to that of iPP. A single relaxation, corresponding to the glass transition, has been found in all the samples. Only the copolymer with the highest hexene content seems to display the beginning of another relaxation at low temperature.

Notes: Capitalizing on the superior sensitivity of proton NMR, relatively rapid estimates of three parameters, namely, comonomer content, crystallinity, and long spacing, are determined for three ethylene/vinyl alcohol copolymers using solid-state proton NMR measurements. Multiple-pulse techniques are utilized (a) in conjunction with magic angle spinning for measuring comonomer content, (b) in conjunction with a T1xz relaxation measurement for determining crystallinity, and (c) in conjunction with a T1xz-based spin diffusion measurement for determining the long spacing. These three parameters, extracted from data collected in a total spectrometer time of about 20 min, are compared with similar parameters obtained using more conventional DSC, SAXS (including synchrotron), and solution-state NMR measurements. Agreement is found to be good. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J. Polym. Sci. B Polym. Phys. 36: 2103-2109, 1998

Notes: The characteristic ratios of three samples of poly(1-hexadecene) with different tacticities were evaluated from intrinsic viscosity and molecular weight data obtained with a size exclusion chromatograph with dual (concentration plus viscosity) detector. No significant differences were found for the characteristic ratio in the studied range of tacticities. Theoretical calculations for the unperturbed dimensions were also performed for these samples by using the rotational isomeric state model, and compared with the experimental results.
