    Notes: Abstract: The aim of this study was to purify microvessels from bovine retina and also to cultivate bovine retinal endothelial cells (BRECs) or intramural pericytes, to determine their fatty acid composition. Microvessels were obtained after Dounce homogenization of the retina followed by centrifugation on albumin cushion and finally microvessels in the pellet were trapped on a 100-µm nylon filter. Contamination of microvessel preparations by neuronal tissue, assessed after both microscopic examination and western blotting with a monoclonal antibody raised against rhodopsin, was minor. In the entire bovine retina, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) represented 23.3% of the total fatty acids and there was about three times less arachidonic acid (AA) (8.2%) than DHA. In contrast, DHA and AA levels were almost equivalent in the retinal microvessels with ∼10% of total fatty acids. When compared with intact microvessels, the DHA proportion of confluent monolayers of both BRECs or pericytes in primary cultures dropped to ∼2% of the total fatty acids, whereas AA was unchanged. Culture medium supplementation with unesterified DHA (10 µM) restored the DHA proportion of BRECs close to the microvascular value at the expense of linoleic acid without affecting AA very much. In contrast, DHA supplementation in pericytes increased the DHA proportion of these cells at the expense of AA. In conclusion, DHA of intact microvessels represented 10% of the total fatty acids, which was close to the AA proportion. Mild DHA supplementation of BRECs or pericytes in primary cultures restored their DHA proportion to the original microvessel value. This high percentage of polyunsaturated fatty acids in retinal microvessels should allow us to test the hypothesis that oxidation products derived from these fatty acids may be involved in the pathogenic process leading to diabetic retinopathy.

    Notes: Abstract Between 1977 and 1994, 42 patients were treated surgically for hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM). Patients have been followed up between 2 months to 17 years, mean of 107 months. There were 26 (62%) males and 16 (38%) females. There was only one pediatric case. There was no correlating factor among the ethnic groups (Maori, European, Indian, Asian, etc.). Family history was noted in 12% of the cases. Seventy-one percent of patients had aortic/left ventricular (LV) combined approach while 29% had aortic approach alone at the time of surgery. Five patients underwent other procedures, along with coronary artery bypass grafting in 3, mitral valve replacement in 1, and aortic valve replacement in 1. Persistant postoperative arrhythmias were found in 7 cases, atrial fibrillation (AF) in 3, and left bundle branch block in 4.

    Notes: We performed a correlated study of sulfide-passivated GaAs(001) surfaces, using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and reflection anisotropy spectroscopy. The reflection anisotropy spectra reveal after desorption of the sulfide overlayer the presence of As and Ga dimers analogous to ones observed on As-decapped surfaces. We identify in the 3d core-level spectra the surface components due to As and Ga dimers: their chemical shifts are −0.28 and −0.35 eV, respectively. We propose an interpretation of the main surface components in the framework of a simple model, based on charge neutrality, electron counting, and electronegativity concepts. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The phsA gene encodes phenoxazinone synthase (PHS), which catalyses the penultimate step in the pathway for actinomycin biosynthesis in Streptomyces antibioticus. The phsA promoter strikingly resembles a putative StreptomycesσE cognate promoter, and purified EσE holoenzyme transcribed the phsA promoter in vitro. However, the phsA promoter was still active in an S. antibioticussigE null mutant and the level of PHS activity was unaffected. Despite this, disruption of sigE blocked actinomycin production completely. The loss of actinomycin production correlated with a 10-fold decrease in the activity of actinomycin synthetase I, the enzyme which catalyses the activation of the precursor of the actinomycin chromophore.

    Notes: The extracytoplasmic function (ECF) sigma factor, σE, is required for normal cell wall integrity in Streptomyces coelicolor. We have investigated the regulation of σE through a transcriptional and mutational analysis of sigE and the surrounding genes. Nucleotide sequencing identified three genes located downstream of sigE ; orf202, cseB and cseC (cse, control of sigE ). cseB and cseC encode a putative response regulator and a putative transmembrane sensor histidine protein kinase respectively. Although most sigE transcription appeared to be monocistronic, sigE was also transcribed as part of a larger operon, including at least orf202. sigE null mutants are sensitive to cell wall lytic enzymes, have an altered peptidoglycan muropeptide profile, and on medium deficient in Mg2+ they overproduce actinorhodin, sporulate poorly and form crenellated colonies. A constructed cseB null mutant appeared to have the same phenotype as a sigE null mutant, which was accounted for by the observed absolute dependence of the sigE promoter on cseB. It is likely that the major role of cseB is to regulate sigE transcription because expression of sigE alone from a heterologous promoter suppressed the cseB mutation. Mg2+ suppresses the CseB/SigE phenotype, probably by stabilizing the cell envelope, and sigE transcript levels were consistently higher in Mg2+-deficient cultures than in high Mg2+-grown cultures. We propose a model in which the CseB/CseC two-component system modulates activity of the sigE promoter in response to signals from the cell envelope.

    Notes: This article investigates the influence of a French communist writer on Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop. Joan Littlewood celebrated her eightieth birthday in 1994 – a year which also saw an ‘Arena’ programme about her life and the publication of her memoir Joan's Book. Critics and commentators are agreed that Littlewood was a charismatic director, her Theatre Workshop a ground-breaking company which in the late 1950s and early 1960s acquired an international reputation only matched later by the RSC. However, the company's distinctive style drew as much from a European as from a native English theatre tradition, and in this article Derek Paget examines the contribution to that style of a seminal work on design – Léon Moussinac's The New Movement in the Theatre of 1931. Although he was also important as a theorist of the emerging cinema, Moussinac's chief influence was as a transmitter of ideas in the theatre, and in the following article Derek Paget argues that his book offered the Manchester-based group insights into European radical left theatre unavailable to them in any other way. Moussinac thus helped Theatre Workshop to become a ‘Trojan horse’ for radical theatricality in the post-war years, while his design ideas were to sustain the Workshop throughout its period of major creativity and influence. Derek Paget worked in the early 1970s on Joan Littlewood's last productions at Stratford East, and he wrote on Oh What a Lovely War in NTQ 23 (1990). He is now Reader in Drama at Worcester College of Higher Education.

    Notes: When, back in 1971, the original Theatre Quarterly devoted one of its earliest issues (TQ6, 1972) to television drama, the strongest reactions were to remarks by Tony Garnett concerning the recently developed form already being dubbed documentary drama. Subsequent issues featured both an attack on the form from Paul Ableman, and a vigorous defence from its leading practitioner, Jeremy Sandford, author of the seminal Cathy Come Home (1966). As this article bears witness, the debate still rages, and here its leading historian, Derek Paget – author of True Stories: Documentary Drama on Radio, Stage, and Television (Manchester University Press, 1990) – explores some of the ways in which myth has contributed as much as analysis to the argument. He goes back to contemporary documentation to explore the nature of the BBC's own sometimes timorous attitude to the creature it had spawned, its context within the developing aesthetics and technology of television drama, the reactions of politicians and local government agencies – and the way in which repeat transmissions were (and were not) hedged about with paranoia.

When Tertullian in his Adversus Judaeos reviled Jews for their failure to understand the scriptures in the way he did, was he in fact reviling Jews known to him who actually disagreed with him? Or put another way, do the accusations he makes against Jews give evidence of an ongoing debate with that ancient community?
