Notes: Abstract A new method of measuring the size of the thymus in infants less than 1 year of age is presented. The width of the thymus was measured in a transverse image while the area of the largest lobe was assessed in a longitudinal image. The thymic index was then defined as the product of these two values. Intra-and interobserver variation analysis were performed in 23 infants. Each infant was scanned alternately by both of two radiologists, and later the same day the measurements were repeated. The mean differences between the first and second measurements (intraobserver variation) were −0.25 (2 SD 7.56) and −1.13 (2 SD 10.80), respectively, for the two observers. The mean difference between the first measurements of the two observers (interobserver variation) was 1.47 (2 SD 9.39). In a postmortem study of 12 infants the thymic index measured by sonography showed an acceptable correlation to the actual volume (c = 0.80) and weight (c = 0.87) of the thymus. In conclusion, our sonographic estimate of the volume of the thymus, the thymic index, in infants under 8 months of age seems to be easy, reliable and reproducible.

Notes: Abstract. Diagnosis of pleural effusion (PE) on supine chest X-ray (SCXR) is considered difficult. This study aimed at evaluating the accuracy of the diagnosis of PE on SCXR and was performed in two phases. At phase 1, a formula for the sonographic estimation of the volume of PE was established by correlating 24 measurements (in 7 patients in whom complete drainage was achieved) with the drained volumes. At phase two, 112 consecutive SCXRs were supplemented by sonography of the chest. The films were evaluated for the presence of PE and for the presence of different radiologic signs of PE. Sonography showed PE in 41 right and 30 left hemithoraces. The overall accuracy of the diagnosis of PE on SCXR was 82 %. Only one of the undiagnosed PEs had a volume of 〉 300 ml. The most accurate signs were increased density of the hemithorax, blunted costophrenic angle, and loss of the hemidiaphragm silhouette.

Notes: Abstract Dermatophytes such as Trichophyton species are common human pathogens, the infection of which results in dermatophytosis (also known as ringworm). Several laboratory tests are used routinely for the diagnosis of dermatophytosis, but they are either slow or lacking specificity. Through examination of genomic DNA from Trichophyton dermatophytes and other fungi in arbitrarily primed PCR, it was shown that a random primer 5′-ACCCGACCTG-3′ produced bands of 4.3 kb, 1.9 kb, 1.7 kb and 0.7 kb in T. rubrum DNA, bands of 2.5 kb, 1.9 kb and 0.8 kb in T. mentagrophytes var. interdigitale and T. mentagrophytes var. mentagrophytes DNA, and bands of 2.5 kb, 1.9 kb, 1.5 kb and 0.9 kb in T. tonsurans DNA. This primer amplified bands of different sizes in other fungal DNA. Therefore, based on the distinct band patterns observed in arbitrarily primed PCR using this primer, T. rubrum, T. mentagrophytes and T. tonsurans dermatophytes could be rapidly differentiated.

Notes: Abstract Candida species are opportunistic human pathogens capable of causing a variety of clinical diseases. Rapid and precise identification of Candida to species level is essential for effective treatment and management strategies. Conventional diagnosis of candidiasis is sometimes slow and variable. By using a random primer 5′-ACGGGCCAGT-3′ in arbitrarily primed polymerase chain reaction, seven common Candida species (i.e. C. albicans, C. guilliermondii, C. parapsilosis, C. krusei, C. lipolytica, C. tropicalis and C. (Torulopsis) glabrata) produced characteristic DNA band patterns, which enabled rapid determination to species level among them. Further analysis of the nucleotide sequences of Candida specific fragments should improve our understanding of the molecular structures and possible functions of the gene regions involved.

Notes: Zero-field and in-field small-angle neutron scattering measurements over a wide Q range are presented for the Fe91Zr9 metallic glass in the 10–290 K range. Two transitions observed at 210 K and around 60 K are related to Tc and reentrant transition temperature, respectively. The spectra (0.003 A(ring)−1〈Q〈0.5 A(ring)−1) reveal the existence of an important contribution at the lowest Q values and at least two humps in the entire curves. The application of the magnetic field results in an anisotropic signal, and a global decrease of intensity. The magnetic field drastically reduces I(Q) in the region for Q〈0.04 A(ring)−1, but not so strongly at larger Q values (even at H=4 T), becoming more evident a remaining hump. Its origin can so far be uniquely explained by the models dealing with the existence of clusters embedded in a ferromagnetic matrix. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Pelagic North Sea whiting Merlangius merlangus preyed upon (pelagic) sprat and sandeel, while demersal whiting preyed upon (demersal) Norway pout and herring. Values of diet breadth were low for both feeding groups using Levin's index. Diet overlaps within layers were low (D 〈0·25), while the between layer food overlap was moderate (D=0·25–0·74) to high (D 〉0·74) using Schoener's index. Selection of prey was density dependent. However, prey size also played an important role. The diet of whiting shifted from amphipods and mysids to fish with increasing predator length, and the length of prey consumed increased significantly with length of whiting. The fact that the stomach contents differed between the feeding groups demonstrates the need for a sampling design that includes both pelagic and demersal habitats when trying to quantify the diet of whiting.

Notes: The 1Δu, 3dπ component of the lowest ungerade 3d+4s Rydberg supercomplex of acetylene has been observed by (3+1) photon ionization spectroscopy of C2H2 and C2D2. In both isotopic species the vibrationless level of this new electronic state is sufficiently long lived to support rotational structure. From the observed isotopic shift and from the rotational and vibrational parameters determined in the present analyses, this state could be unambiguously identified as the lowest Rydberg state of 1Δu symmetry, belonging to the 3d complex of acetylene. The weak intensity of this three-photon 1Δu–1Σ+g electronic transition is discussed in comparison with the other Rydberg transitions within the same supercomplex. Excited vibronic bands in the same energy region allowed to determine the ν1 and ν2 frequencies for some components of this Rydberg supercomplex. The absence of the nearby H˜ 1Πu, 3dδ Rydberg state in the MPI spectra is discussed in terms of predissociation. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have investigated the origin of the antiphase structure of the mw-induced ESR spectrum of a radical pair in a micelle. By applying an accurate numerical method we have examined various specially designed cases that clearly distinguish between the proposed mechanisms for the production of antiphase structure. It is demonstrated that neither of the previously proposed mechanisms can explain the observations. We argue that the only possible mechanism is a coherent, reencounter type mechanism involving two consecutive steps similar to the well established S–T0 mechanism. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.
