Notes: We investigated extracts of timothy grass pollen from four seasons (1989, 1990, 1991, and 1994) by protein content, SDS-PAGE, immunoblot, RAST, RAST inhibition, and crossed immunoelectrophoresis. Extract of the pollen from 1991 showed the lowest yield in quantitative assays. SDS-PAGE, crossed immunoelectrophoresis, RAST, and RAST inhibition expressed approximately comparable patterns for all extracts except that from 1991. Obviously, the quality of grass pollens, as shown for some ragweed (Ambrosia elatior) pollens depend on year of collection. Our findings are partially in agreement with some earlier examinations of the quality of timothy pollen from different pollen seasons.

Notes: Abstract The method of microcalorimetric compatibility testing of the constituents of combustible materials and casting composite explosives is based on the change in power when separately measuring the different materials involved, and their mixture, during isothermal treatment. The experimental power-time curve for the mixture was compared to the hypothetical curve constructed from the results of the measurements of individual materials.

Notes: Abstract The thermal decompositions of a double-base propellant (DB), five triple-base propellants (TB) and nitroguanidine (NGV) were examined. The kinetic parameters were evaluated using the ASTM, Kissinger, Rogers-Morris, Freeman-Carroll and Borchardt-Daniels methods. The values of the orders of some of the chemical reactions (n), like some values of activation energies (Ea), do not have any physical meaning, but they represent the manner of propellant decomposition and prove that the mechanism of the reaction changes during the decomposition process. As a result of this fact, differences appear in the evaluated kinetic parameters between various methods.

Notes: Abstract Hexogen can be used pressed only if its crystals are covered by some polymeric material [1], either natural or artificial. Montan waxes, as natural polymeric materials, were used for the phlegmatization. The melting process of seven types of waxes was analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry. The thermal decomposition processes of hexogens and phlegmatized hexogens were investigated by dynamic differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic thermogravimetric analyses. Kinetic parameters of the decomposition processes of hexogens were evaluated by using data obtained from differential scanning calorimetric curves.

Notes: Abstract. For the determination of the potential of irregular inhomogeneous bodies they can be decomposed into (polyhedral) parts of homogeneous density. Efficient formulas for the computation of the gravitational potential (and its first and second derivatives) of homogeneous polyhedral bodies are presented. They are obtained using a transformation of the volume integral into line integrals. The most important property of the solution is that all ten quantities under consideration (potential, 3 components of the gravitation vector, 6 components of the tensor of the second derivatives) can be represented by using only two different line integrals. Furthermore, all coordinate transformations needed in the evaluation are chosen in such a way that they do not appear in the final result. The consequence, favorable for efficient programming, is that the same transcendental expressions along each edge of the polyhedron are needed for all ten quantities; even the same linear combinations of them for individual surfaces are appearing in different formulas. The expressions obtained are probably the simplest possible, which is also reflected in the fact that for the special case of a right rectangular prism they may easily be specialized to the usual well-known formulas.

Notes: Summary The retention behaviour and separation ability of cellulose, starch and aminoplast thin-layers with aqueous and non-aqueous mobile phases has been studied by measuring the retention of a homologous series of benzamides. The retention behaviour and separation ability are discussed in terms of the nature of the solute, support and eluent.

Notes: Abstract Photoperiod response genes play a major role in determining the climatic adaptability of European wheat varieties. Photoperiod insensitivity, in the vast majority of photoperiod insensitive European wheat varieties, is probably determined by a Ppd1 allele originally derived from the old Japanese variety Akakomugi. Analysis of the pleiotropic effects of a Ppd1 allele from the Italian variety Mara shows that, besides accelerating ear emergence time, Ppd1 also reduces plant height, tillering, and spikelet numbers. Increases in spikelet fertilities more than compensate for reduced spikelet numbers, producing increased numbers of grains per ear. In southern Europe, early flowering Ppd1 genotypes produce larger grain and greater yields. In England and Germany, pleiotropic effects of Ppd1 on yield vary annually, depending on prevailing weather conditions, from +9% to -16%, over a 10 year period in the United Kingdom. A possible alternative Ppd1 allele from the CIMMYT variety Ciano 67 was compared to that from Mara. Differences associated with complete substituted chromosomes were found to be due to linked genes rather than different Ppd1 alleles. Examination of an alternative weaker gene for photoperiod insensitivity, Ppd2, shows this to exert similar but less significant pleiotropic effects to Ppd1. In the UK, in each of three years of trialing, Ppd2 increased yield 6% more than Ppd1. Results of 10 years trialing show that in Central European countries, between areas where photoperiod sensitive or photoperiod insensitive varieties have a clear adaptive significance, the annual variations in climate make it extremely difficult for breeders to produce varieties with good adaptability to changing environmental conditions.

Notes: Summary The chromatographic behaviour of 30 estradiol and estrone derivatives has been studied on diol, amino- and cyanopropyl silica gel stationary phases with non-aqueous mobile phases. The slopes of linear relationships between the logarithm of the retention factor and logarithm of the volume fractions of the polar components of the binary eluents have been calculated and are discussed in relation to the characteristics of the solute, eluent and stationary phase. An equation for testing the separation efficiency of stationary phases has been derived.

Notes: Abstract One of the frequent causes of pollen allergy in our region (Serbia, Yugoslavia) is the pollen of poplar (Populus canadensis). The aim of this study was to form RAST for the determination of specific anti-Populus canadensis IgE antibodies. Affinity purified and radiolabelled (I-125) MoAb E1 was used for forming assay for the determination of specific IgE. By titration of extract of poplarPopulus canadensis we determined that the quantity of 0.65 mL extract is needed for coupling of lg BrCN activated paper discs. Coupling was performed in Na2CO3/NaHCO3 buffer pH 10, on 4°C for 48h. Using this newely formed RAST, specific forPopulus canadensis, we have deteminated anti-Populus canadensis IgE antibodies as well as cross reactivity between pollens ofPopulus canadensis andPopulus deltoides.
