    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die Lungenfunktion wird durch eine Narkose deutlich beeinflußt, so daß bei kardiopulmonal vorgeschädigten Patienten eine kritische Einschränkung des pulmonalen Gasaustauschs auftreten kann. Als Ursachen sind Veränderungen der Lungenvolumina und Atemmechanik, eine Erhöhung des Verschlußvolumens und das Auftreten basaler Atelektasen zu nennen. Zwischen verschiedenen Narkoseformen bestehen wahrscheinlich nur geringe Unterschiede für die Beeinträchtigung der Lungenfunktion. Die Folge der anästhesiebedingten Pathomechanismen sind VA/Q-Verteilungsstörungen und ein erhöhter QS/QT, wodurch die Oxygenierung verschlechtert wird. Diese Veränderungen sind auch in der postoperativen Phase nachweisbar und wirken synergistisch zu den operationsbedingten Einschränkungen des pulmonalen Gasaustauschs.

    Notes: Abstract Neuronal localization was investigated of glycogen phosphorylase (GP) in ganglia of the peripheral nervous system of the rat. Immunofluorescence and immunoenzymatic procedures were applied with a monoclonal anti-bovine brain GP antibody on paraformaldehyde-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues. Immunoreactivity was only present in the somatic neurons of the mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus in the brain stem and in dorsal root ganglia (DRG), but not in the autonomic neurons of the superior cervical ganglia or in the sensory nuclei of the spinal cord. GP immunoreactivity was present as early as day 1 after birth. In the adult rat, staining was present in neurons of different sizes, and to varying intensities. No relationship was apparent between the staining intensities and morphologically distinguishable types of neurons. In DRG, the type of reactivity was the same from cervical to sacral ganglia. The selected occurrence of GP in specific neurons of the peripheral nervous system in contrast to the ubiquitous occurrence in all astrocytes of the central nervous system may indicate a different role of neuronal glycogen compared to astrocytic glycogen.

    Notes: Abstract: The decay of 111Ru obtained from fast on-line chemical and mass separation has been investigated by β-γ-t and γ-γ coincidence techniques. Earlier spin and parity assignments of 111Rh levels based on extrapolations of level systematics are confirmed. In particular, the K=1/2 intruder band is supported by the hindrance of E2 transitions between deformed and spherical states and enhancement of intraband E2 transitions. The excitation energies of intruder band members in Rh isotopes show a minimum at 109Rh64, with two neutrons less than 111Rh at the N=66 midshell. This trend, which differs from the one in the higher-Z neighbouring elements Ag and Cd with minima at N=66, follows the evolution of deformation observed in the lower-Z elements Ru and Mo.

    Notes: Abstract The low-energy level scheme of theN=63 nucleus101Sr has been obtained from a β-decay study of101Rb. The ν[532]5/2 and ν[411]3/2 orbitals are well established as the ground state and a band head at 271.2keV, respectively. The general properties of the level scheme indicate a quadrupole deformation ofβ ≃ 0.4, confirming the unique feature of saturation of deformation inN ≥ 60 Sr isotopes. The energies of theK=3/2 intraband transitions in the odd-neutron neighbours99Sr61 and101Sr63 are very similar. More generally, the identical bands at low spin in98–101Sr nuclei are correlated with the mass-independent moments of inertia in this region.

    Notes: Abstract Evidence for the 2+ level in102Sr is obtained from theβ-decay of102Rb, mass separated at the ISOLDE facility. The energy of 126 keV and the collectivity of the 2+→0+ transition indicate that102Sr is a strongly deformed rigid rotor. In addition, a sizeable lifetime is measured for the 94 keV transition in102Y.

    Notes: Abstract Summary. The physiological function of brain glycogen and the role of phosphorylase kinase as a regulatory enzyme in the cascade of reactions associated with glycogenolysis in the brain have not been fully elucidated. As a first step toward elucidating such a function, we studied the localization of phosphorylase kinase in glial and neuronal primary cell cultures, and in adult rat brain slices, using a rabbit polyclonal antibody against skeletal muscle glycogen phosphorylase kinase. Immunocytochemical examination of rat astroglia-rich primary cultures revealed that a large number of cells were positive for glycogen phosphorylase kinase immunoreactivity. These cells were also positive for vimentin, a marker for immature glia, while they were negative for glial fibrillary acidic protein, a marker for mature astroglia, and for galactocerebroside, an oligodendroglial marker. Neurons in rat neuron-rich primary cultures did not show any kinase-positive staining. In paraformaldehyde-fixed adult rat brain sections, phosphorylase kinase immunoreactivity was detected in glial-like cells throughout the brain, with relatively high staining found in the cerebral cortex, the cerebellum, and the medulla oblongata. Phosphorylase kinase immunoreactivity could not be detected in neurons, with the exception of a group of large neurons in the brain stem, most likely belonging to the mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus. Phosphorylase kinase was also localized in the choroid plexus and to a lesser degree in the ependymal cells lining the ventricles. Phosphorylase kinase thus appears to have the same cellular distribution in nervous tissue as its substrates, i.e. glycogen phosphorylase and glycogen, which suggests that the physiological role of brain phosphorylase kinase is the mobilization of glycogen stores to fuel the increased metabolic demands of neurons and astrocytes.
