Notes: Abstract The acid-base properties of four leaf litter extracts, LLE (eucalyptus, fern, oak and chestnut coverture), were characterized by synchronous fluorescence (SyF) spectroscopy and compared with those of two fulvic acids (FA) extracted from two different horizons (0–5 and 5–15 cm) of an oak forest soil. The characterization was based on the variation with the pH of the properties of the fluorescent structures present in the samples, which function as probes and provide a macroscopic image of their acid-base properties. These sets of SyF spectra collected as a function of the pH show fingerprinting potential. They were treated by a self-modeling curve resolution procedure, evolving factor analysis with a gradient concentration window (EFA-GCW), to reduce the raw spectral data to the number of components, their spectra, and SyF intensity profiles (pH distribution diagrams). Four acid-base systems were detected for all samples of LLE and FA with pKas ranging from 2.5 to 10.0 (pKas about 3, 5, 7 and 9, except for the fern LLE sample which showed pKas about 5, 7, 9 and 10). A similarity analysis of the spectra of the components, performed by cluster analysis, showed that the most acidic fluorescent structures of the LLE are not similar to those of the soil FA, but the less acidic are.

Notes: The effects of reagent concentration and the pH in the kinetic behavior of the dissociation of Fe(II)-fulvic acid complexes were studied using a spectrophotometric technique. The results show that this behavior is not strongly affected by the concentration of fulvic acid, the concentration of the metal cation on the ratio of these concentrations and that variations in pH are more important in the dissociation process. A possible explanation based in the relative influence of proton concentration on the stability of the complexes is proposed. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Int J Chem Kinet: 30: 63-67,1998.

Notes: The nucleotide sequence of a fragment of 21 308 bp from the left arm of Saccharomyces cerevisiae chromosome XIV has been determined. Analysis of the sequence revealed 13 open reading frames (ORFs) longer than 300 bp, four of which correspond to the previously identified genes LEU4, MET4, POL1 and RAS2. One putative protein, N2160, shares considerable homology (32% identity) with a hypothetical protein encoded by a gene located on chromosome XV as well as with human OCRL protein (36% identity), involved in Lowe's syndrome. N2185 contains ten predicted transmembrane segments and is similar to another putative protein (YKL146) from yeast. The sequence of the reported DNA fragment has been submitted to the EMBL data library under Accession Number Z50161.

Notes: We report the sequence of a 20 300 bp DNA fragment from the left arm of Saccharomyces cerevisiae chromosome IV. This segment contains 13 complete open reading frames (ORFs) and part of another ORF, altogether covering 84·2% of the entire sequence, five of which correspond to the previously characterized KIN28, MSS2, PHO2, POL3/CDC2 and DUN1 genes. One putative protein, D2358p, shares considerable homology with an O-sialoglycoprotein endopeptidase from Pasteurella haemolytica serotype A1. The putative product of D2325 contains the characteristic consensus motif of triacylglycerol lipases. D2320p and D2352p have a putative ‘leucine-zipper’ structure and a RNA-binding region Rnp-1 signature, respectively. The sequence data have been submitted to EMBL data library under Accession Number X95644.
