Notes: Abstract: The loss of 8Li recoil nuclei in 7Li(d,p)8Li has been measured using different backings and 7LiF target thicknesses as well as different deuteron energies. The results confirm essentially recent TRIM calculations. The losses are large (about 13%) for the combination of thin targets and heavy backings at E d=0.80 MeV and increase with decreasing deuteron energy. The implications on the cross sections for 7Li(d,p)8Li and 7Be(p,γ)8B are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Thed(d, n) 3He andd(d,p)t fusion reactions have been studied at center-of-mass energies E=1.6 to 130 keV using intense beam currents from 30, 100, and 450 kV accelerators in combination with detectors in close and far geometry. The cross sesction ratio,R(E)=σ(d,n)/σ(d, p), approaches unity (within 2%) at low energies; thus there is no experimental evidence for the Oppenheimer-Phillips effect at subcoulomb energies. The cross sections of d(d, p)t at E≦10keV show clear evidence for electron screening effects. However, the observed cross section enhancement is significantly larger than can be accounted for from available atomic physics models.

Notes: Abstract Excitation functions and forward-backward anisotropies have been measured for the7Li(p, γ)8Be capture reaction over the proton energy rangeE p =100 to 1500 keV, using a 4π summing crystal and Ge(Li) detectors, respectively. The data show at all energies the presence of El and M1 capture amplitudes arising from the direct capture (DC) process and theE R =441 and 1030 keV resonances, respectively. Due to the observed DC process, the present data increase significantly the reaction rates (up to a factor of 110) compared to values given in the compilation. The data and their analyses remove the recent criticism on DC model calculations, which had implied a significant reduction in the extrapolated S(E) factor for7Be(p,γ)B and thus in the predicted flux of high-energy solar neutrinos; thus, the solar neutrino problem is still with us.

Notes: Abstract In the evolution of silicon-based integrated circuits towards Giga-bit technologies, high-quality dielectric films of nanometer dimensions are needed. The successful fabrication of such ultrathin films on silicon substrates requires a good understanding of their physicochemical characteristics, their growth kinetics, and their growth mechanisms. In this research field, ion beam analytic techniques play an important role. This role as well as future developments are discussed.

Notes: Abstract A summer institute was convened at the Gran Sasso Laboratory (Italy), 27. June to 7. July 1994, in part to explore the advantages of an accelerator laboratory deep underground, particularly for crucial nuclear-astrophysics measurements presently limited at low energies by cosmic-ray backgrounds. Here we review specific reactions identified as needing further study in a low-background environment, and outline suitable facilities to carry out such studies.

Notes: Abstract. Excitation functions of the γ0 capture transition in 12C(α,γ)16O at θγ= 90˚ were obtained using a 4 × 4'' BGO crystal in close geometry (E= 0.94 to 3.39 MeV) and a 2 × 2'' BGO crystal in far geometry (E= 1.69 to 3.29 MeV), where the study of the reaction was initiated in inverse kinematics involving a windowless gas target. The small crystal detected essentially the E1 multipole component in the γ0 capture transition, while the large crystal observed approximately the angle-integrated sum of the E1 and E2 multipole components. Analysis of the two data sets together with data from previous work provided strong evidence that both multipoles are of equal importance at the relevant stellar energy E 0= 0.3 MeV.

Notes: Abstract: The energy spread of atomic and molecular ion beams from the 4 MV Dynamitron tandem accelerator at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum has been studied and in part minimized. Using the ER= 6.40 MeV narrow resonance in 1H(15N,αγ)12C with an 15N energy spread of 4.55 keV, the Doppler broadening for several hydrogen-bearing gases was found to be in good agreement with expectation: e.g. for NH3 gas a rotational-vibrational Doppler width of 10.41 ± 0.25 keV was observed (theory = 10.4 keV). Studies of the vibrational Doppler widths of H-bonds on a Si 〈100〉 surface were performed using a 4πγ-ray detection system together with UHV-chambers for sample preparation, transport, and analysis. The results showed that further improvements in the experimental set-ups are needed for such investigations.

Notes: Abstract. For improved measurements of the key astrophysical reaction 12C(α,γ)16O in inverted kinematics, a recoil separator ERNA is being developed at the 4 MV Dynamitron tandem accelerator in Bochum to detect directly the 16O recoils with about 50% efficiency. Calculations of the ion beam optics including all filtering and focusing elements of ERNA are presented. Since the 12C projectiles and the 16O recoils have essentially the same momentum, and since the 12C ion beam emerging from the accelerator passes through a momentum filter (analysing magnet), the 12C ion beam must be as free as possible from 16O contamination for ERNA to succeed. In the present work, the 16O contamination was reduced from a level of 1 × 10−11 to a level below 2 × 10−29 by the installation of Wien filters both before and after the analysing magnet. The measurement of these and other beam specifications involved other parts of the final ERNA layout – sequentially a Wien filter, a 60˚ dipole magnet, another Wien filter, and a ΔE-E telescope. The setup led to a measured suppression factor of 5 × 10−18 for the 12C ion beam. The experiments also indicate that an almost free choice of the charge state for the 16O recoils is possible in the separator.

Notes: Abstact: The elastic scattering cross sections, σ (E,θ), for the systems He+Ta and He+W have been measured at θlab=165° and E lab=76.1 keV to 3.988 MeV using targets with a thickness of a few atomic layers. The results are smaller than the results given by the Rutherford scattering law, σR(E,θ), due to the effects of electron screening and can be described by σ(E,θ)/σR(E,θ)=(1+Ue/E)−1, where U e is an atomic screening potential energy. The deduced average value, U e=28 ± 3 keV, is consistent with the Moliére- and Lenz-Jensen-models as well as electron binding energies.

Notes: Abstract Nuclear resonant reaction analysis techniques for hydrogen depth profiling in solid materials typically have used15N ion beams at 6.40 MeV and19F ion beams at 6.42 MeV, which require a tandem accelerator. We report a new technique using an18O ion beam at a resonance energy of 2.70 MeV, which requires only a single stage accelerator. Improved values of the nuclear parameters for the 2.70 MeV (18O) and 6.40 MeV (15N) resonances are reported. The beam energy spread was investigated for different ions and ion charge states and found to scale with the charge state. Data obtained using atomic and molecular gas targets reveal the research potential of Doppler spectroscopy. Examples of hydrogen depth profiling in solid materials using15N and18O ion beams are presented.
