    Notes: Summary Cyclic adenosine 5′diphosphate-ribose (cADPR) is thought to have a second messenger role in insulin secretion through mobilisation of Ca2 +. As human lymphocyte antigen CD38 has both ADP-ribosyl cyclase and cADPR hydrolase activity, it may be important in glucose-induced insulin secretion in islets. Thirty one randomly selected Japanese patients with Type II diabetes mellitus who had first-degree and/or second-degree relative(s) with Type II diabetes mellitus were screened for mutations of this gene using single-stranded conformation polymorphism. Two variant patterns in exon 3 and exon 4 of the CD38 gene were identified. The variant in exon 3 resulted in an amino acid substitution from Arg140 (CGG) to Trp (TGG). The Arg140Trp mutation was observed in 4 of 31 patients, and allele frequencies were significantly different in patients and the control subjects (p = 0.004). One patient with this mutation has two missense mutations on beta cell/liver glucose transporter (GLUT2) gene; her mother, who has impaired glucose tolerance, also has this mutation on the CD38 gene and one missense mutation on the GLUT2 gene. Enzyme activity studies using COS-7 cells expressing the Arg140Trp mutation showed a reduction in ADP-ribosyl cyclase and cADPR hydrolase activity of around 50 %. The Arg140Trp mutation on CD38 thus appears to contribute to the development of Type II diabetes mellitus via the impairment of glucose-induced insulin secretion in the presence of other genetic defects.     Notes: Summary Smooth muscle cells in arteries of diabetic rats and rabbits have unique properties including the overexpression of platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) β-receptor compared with controls. Fibronectin, one of the increased components of extracellular matrices in diabetic arteries, plays an important role in the phenotypic change of smooth muscle cells from the contractile to the synthetic type with the expression of the PDGF β-receptor. Moreover, fibronectin synthesis is regulated by transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β). In this study, we report on the expression of TGF-β receptors in diabetic smooth muscle cells, by immunohistochemistry, cross-linking of 125I-TGF-β1 to cells and quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. We also report on the effects of TGF-β1 on fibronectin synthesis of diabetic smooth muscle cells by use of ELISA and immunoprecipitation, in order to clarify the role of TGF-β-fibronectin pathway in forming characteristic changes of diabetic smooth muscle cells. Cultured aortic smooth muscle cells of diabetic rats expressed TGF-β type II receptor about 8.7 times that of controls at the protein level and 5.7 times at the mRNA level, whereas the expression of the type I receptor did not differ between the two types of smooth muscle cells. These changes were accompanied by increased fibronectin synthesis in diabetic smooth muscle cells in response to TGF-β1. Furthermore, protein expression of fibronectin, and mRNA and protein of TGF-β type II receptor were increased in the diabetic aorta compared with the control aorta in vivo, implying the importance of the TGF-β-fibronectin pathway for the unique biology of smooth muscle cells in the diabetic artery.     Notes: Abstract  The distal-proximal representation of the finger and palm in the first somatosensory cortex was reexamined. Somatosensory evoked magnetic fields (SEFs) were measured with a 37-channel first-order axial gradiometer system. Sensory stimulus comprising a 20-ms vibration at a frequency of 200 Hz was delivered to five successive sites in 3-cm increments along the distal-proximal direction over the volar surface of the right index finger and palm. Using a single dipole model, the sources and the signal strengths of the main peak (M50) of the SEFs were estimated. All of the sources were located in the 3b area. There were no statistically significant differences between the locations of dipoles evoked by stimulation of different sites. The results support those of our previous study using a 122-channel whole-head planar gradiometer system that orderly distal-proximal representation of the hand, as described in monkeys, is blurred in the adult human somatosensory cortex.

    Notes: The stability constants for the inclusion of fragrance materials with 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (2HP-β-C yD) in aqueous solution have been determined by the static head-space method. The 1:1 stability constants obtained by this method were in reasonable agreement with the corresponding values in the literature. In addition, the release profiles of fragrance materials from 2HP-β-CyD aqueous solution were investigated using the dynamic head-space method. It was found that the suppression of the fragrance materials release was dependent on their stability constants.

    Notes: Optical characteristics of LiNbO3 implanted with Au+ ions at energy of 23 keV were studied. The color of the surface of the LiNbO3 was changed to blue-green and a large absorption peak around 620 nm was observed. The surface morphology was also found to change with time. Metallic Au dots were observed on the surface after implantation and grew from day to day when the samples were held at room temperature. The absorption peak produced by Au+ implantation was relatively stable toward thermal treatment compared to that of Cu+ implantation into LiNbO3. But as the sample was heated at temperatures higher than about 500 °C, this peak gradually decreased and finally disappeared. These characteristics were explained fairly well by the behavior of Au colloids formed in the surface layer of LiNbO3. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Previously, we have proposed a method of solution for the inverse problems, and successfully applied it to the biomagnetic fields. In the present article, we apply our inverse approach to the leakage magnetic field source searching for the notebook computers. As a result, it is found that our inverse approach is quite effective in searching for the leakage magnetic field source. The validity of our solutions is carefully examined by comparing the measured and calculated magnetic field distributions. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Cu ion implantation in LiNbO3 was done at widely different energies. Optical absorption spectra were measured in the visible range. Samples were heated to 500 °C in air for different times. Depth profiles and the electronic state of Cu for the samples at low ion energies were measured by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Identification of the elements and measurement of the concentration of droplets on the surface were done by inductive coupled plasma spectroscopy. A large, sharp absorption peak is observed at 596 nm for the as-implanted sample at 3 MeV and a large, broad peak at 610 nm for the sample at 25 keV. These absorption peaks are explained in terms of Cu colloids formed in LiNbO3, but the electronic state of Cu in the implanted layer is not that of pure copper. Cu atoms segregate from the implanted layer to the surface, where they form small droplets. The droplet precipitation occurs even at room temperature and is accelerated at high temperature. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
