    Notes: Abstract —In a sand-covered granite terrain of northwestern Rajasthan, India, a five-frequency HLEM survey along a 10-km traverse line generated several clear and strong anomalies. Subjected to a joint constrained 1-D layered earth inversion, the IP and OP frequency soundings at each point of observation yields either no solution or one which is inconsistent with the adjacent point. On the other hand, a 3-D model fitting of these anomalies with a tabular body in a layered host leads to a more meaningful interpretation, suggesting the presence of (1) pockets of weathered conductive material and (2) resistive intruding dykes, embedded in a semi-weathered layer, as the cause of the observed anomalies. The locations of weathered pockets are probably determined by pre-existing weak structures such as joints, fractures and faults, which facilitated movement of groundwater and hence weathering. Thus covered features deep in the bedrock such as intrusives, joints, fractures and faults, which are not directly detectable by the HLEM method, being under a more conductive overburden, are indirectly detected through their imprints left in the overlying weathering profile.

    Notes: Abstract In swine, a point mutation in the ryanodine receptor gene can account for all cases of malignant hyperthermia (MH). The frequency of a corresponding mutation in humans (C1840-T) and its relationship to the in vitro contracture profile is unknown. We screened 192 patients from 28 unrelated northern German families for the C1840-T mutation in the human ryanodine receptor gene and tested for MH susceptibility using the in vitro contracture test (IVCT) according to the European MH Protocol. In our patients 106 revealed MH susceptible (MHS), 56 MH nonsusceptible and 30 MH equivocal status following IVCT. In each family one or two individuals had developed clinical signs of MH or a MH crisis. All of these patients were classified MHS. The C1840-T mutation was found in 2 of 28 families (7.1%). All eight individuals of the two families characterized by this mutation revealed MHS status following IVCT. The thresholds for halothaneand caffeine-induced contractures as well as the contracture profiles following cumulative (0.4–10.0 μmol/l every 3 min) and bolus (10 μmol/l) administration of ryanodine were found to be similar in MHS patients with and without the C1840-T mutation. In conclusion, the C1840-T mutation in the human ryanodine receptor gene is a rare abnormality in MHS families. Similar contracture profiles in the presence and absence of this mutation might imply no major functional role with respect to the contracture response. At present, molecular genetic analysis cannot replace IVCT to discover MH susceptibility in humans.

    Notes: Abstract The study was undertaken to quantify the distribution of soil in different size fractions of water-stable aggregates, and organic C, total N, and total P associated with these aggregates, along a gradient of forest-savanna-cropland in the Indian dry tropics. The effect of residue (wheat straw) amendment under dryland cultivation was also investigated. Proportions of macroaggregates (〉0.3 mm) were highest in the forest and lowest in the cropland soil and ranged from 58–66% in forest, to 55% in savanna and 25–36% in cropland. In contrast, microaggregates (〈0.3 mm) were highest in cropland (64–75%), followed by savanna (45%), and lowest in forest soil (34–42%). Organic C, total N, and total P associated with the macroaggregates ranged from 6.52–29.56, to 0.62–2.44 and 0.06–0.15 g kg-1 soil, respectively, while the respective values in microaggregates were 4.99–22.11, 0.42–2.01, and 0.07–0.19 g kg-1 soil. This study indicates that land-use changes (conversion of forest into savanna and cropland) reduce the organic matter input to the soil and the proportion of macroaggregates. The application of wheat straw did not significantly influence the organic C and total N levels (P〉0.05) in the short term, although the proportion of macroaggregates increased, indicating an improvement in soil structure. Thus soil degradation after conversion of natural systems to cropland can be arrested up to some extent by residue input to the soil.

    Notes: A strategy was developed to design non-carbohydrate inhibitors of influenza virus neuraminidase. Using an iterative cycle of modeling, synthesis, biological testing and X-ray crystallography structure determination, a series of inhibitors based on benzoic acid were produced. The refined structures of three compounds complexed with neuraminidase are reported. The results demonstrate the success of this structure-based drug-design strategy.

    Notes: The reliability of information obtained from surface seismic measurements is an important factor to be considered before one attempts to depth migrate or invert seismic data. The uniqueness of the retrieved model can only be achieved if the observed seismic data contain information on all the wavelengths of the Earth structure.In this study we investigated the sensitivity of model parameters obtainable from elastic multi-offset seismic data. We perturbed a background model, which was defined in terms of longitudinal and shear velocities and density, with quasi-sinusoidal perturbations. The reference and perturbed synthetic seismograms were calculated in the intercept time and slowness (τ-p) domain. The seismic waveform misfit between these two synthetic seismograms computed in a least-squares sense was used as a quantitative measure of the sensitivity of model parameters. We found that middle-wavelength variations of model parameters are sensitive to critical-angle seismic data. This was further confirmed by using a 1-D waveform inversion. These results suggest that all wavelengths of model parameters can be retrieved from waveform analysis of seismic reflection/refraction data: the long wavelengths from traveltime data and the short to medium wavelengths from waveform analysis. The non-uniqueness associated with the information gap for middle wavelengths, as previously proposed for seismic reflection data, can therefore be avoided.
