Notes: Summary Commercial diode lasers have emission wavelengths which overlap some absorption xenon lines. We have performed saturation spectroscopy of four lines, leaving from the first excited atomic configuration 5p 56s, at 823.16 nm, at 828.01 nm, at 834.68 nm and at 820.63 nm, in a weak glow discharge of natural xenon. Natural xenon is a mixture of several isotopes, and the two even isotopes, Xe(129) (26% of relative abundance) and Xe(131) (21%), have a nuclear spin (1/2 and 3/2, respectively) that produces a hyperfine structure. The complex resulting spectra have been resolved and the results are compared with the available literature data.

Notes: Summary The excitation of metastable states in an atomic beam apparatus by means of electron collision is a widespread technique. We have observed a large bistable behaviour in our apparatus designed to provide an intense and collimated beam of metastable helium by excitation with orthogonally impinging electrons. This bistable behaviour largely affects the efficiency of the apparatus and is therefore worth of being carefully investigated. The apparatus has an electrode configuration equivalent to that of a tetrode valve with large intergrid distances. The bistability consists in a hysteresis cycle in the curve of the anode currentvs. grid voltage. Experimental measurements, supported by a simple theoretical model and by numerical simulation, stress out the crucial role played by space charge effects for the onset of bistability. A comparison with previous observation of this phenomenon is given. Spontaneous current oscillations with various shapes have been recorded in one of the two curves of the hysteresis cycle.

Notes: Summary The influence of a static magnetic field orthogonal to the axis of an argon laser discharge is investigated. The enhancement of the small-signal gain at 488 nm is measured as a function of the magnetic field at different values of the parameters of the discharge. The data about the gain compared with the measurement of the fluorescence from the upper level of the 488 nm line give information about the excitation mechanisms. A strong enhancement of the ionization rate of Ar+ is detected.

Notes: Abstract.  We present experimental evidence of the NonLinear Hanle Effect (NLHE) on the 488 nm transition in an active discharge of an argon laser. Experimental data are used to estimate the homogeneous linewidth of the upper level of the transition. The role of the NLHE in the laser power enhancement is also discussed.

Notes: Abstract The results described in this work are part of a systematic search for long wavelength laser lines to be used in high magnetic field EPR applications and in plasma diagnostic. Four new far-infrared laser lines of CH2 = CF2 (1,1 difluoroethylene), optically pumped by a waveguide CO2 laser, have been discovered and characterized in wavelength, polarization relative to the pumping radiation and offset relative to the CO2 center frequency. New measurements of polarization and offset of 5 already known laser lines are also reported. A table of all of the known CO2 pumped FIR laser lines from this molecule is given.

Notes: Abstract By using monochromatic sources of radiation we measured the reflectivity and transmission vs temperature behavior of YBaCuO thin film in the Far Infrared region in the range 300-20 K. A smooth change of optical properties is observed from critical temperature down to 40 K with an evident reduction of the losses for all the frequencies we examined. To analyze the use of YBaCuO films as semireflecting elements in submillimeter devices we made a preliminary study of the optical properties of the substrate in the same conditions. The permanence of the sample in a superconducting phase can be deduced from its room-temperature transmittance, as it changes drastically if some degeneracy occurs in the film.

Notes: Abstract We present preliminary data on the performance of a new fast photodetector based on a W–InSb metal-insulator-semiconductor point contact diode operating at room temperature and with no bias voltage. The device can work either as a video detector or as harmonic mixer for radiation from far–infrared (FIR) to visible. In the FIR region, for wavelengths from 200 to 400 μm, the W–InSb point contact diode showed a sensitivity comparable to that of Golay cells. In the visible region the device showed a video and heterodyne detection responsivity much higher with respect to standard M.I.M. point contact diodes. Owing to its ruggedness, low cost and wide band of operation, the W–InSb point contact diode may be very attractive as a general purpose optical sensor.

Notes: Abstract We used a Stark-Optoacoustic cell and hybrid waveguide resonators to perform an Infrared and Far Infrared Stark Spectroscopy study on some transitions of13CD3OH. Different behaviours of the transitions in the presence of a d.c. electric field were observed. The Stark splittings of six FIR laser lines ranging from 34 to 136 MHz/kVcm−1 were determined. The analysis of the behaviour of the IR and FIR transitions in the presence of the external electric fields gives important and exclusive information on the levels involved in the transitions.

Notes: Abstract We measured the dependence of the reflectivity of InSb crystals upon temperature in the submillimeter region using monochromatic radiation from an optically pumped far infrared (FIR) laser. The measures allowed us to determine the value of the electron effective mass at low temperatures with radiations of different frequencies. Our measurements extend the results obtained recently on pure crystals with magneto-optical methods to the low temperatures region where only old measures were available.
