Notes: The pinning induced magnetostriction in an isotropic superconductor was calculated for different sample shapes. We analyzed some special shapes for which the solution can be found analytically. The magnetostriction of a finite slab was considered. In order to determine the influence of demagnetization effects, the pinning induced magnetostriction of an infinitely long and thin strip was calculated. A simple, approximate formula can be used in particular cases to analyze the magnetostriction induced by pinning forces. In this formula the magnetostriction of a sample is connected directly with its magnetization. We also present some experimental results on high temperature superconductors which are analyzed in frames of the developed theory. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The temperature dependence of the longitudinal magnetostriction of a CuGeO3 single crystal is measured within the temperature range 4.2–20 K in a magnetic field of 10 T. As the temperature is raised above 4.2 K, the magnetostriction at first increases from vanishingly small values, attains a maximum at a temperature of approximately 12 K, and then abruptly drops as the temperature approaches the spin-Peierls transition. The results are interpreted on the basis of a simple model utilizing the real pattern of magnetic excitations in the spin system.

Notes: Abstract The investigation of the specific heat of a RbDy(WO4)2 single crystal at temperatures 0.2–2.5 K and in magnetic fields up to 2 T are reported. The temperature dependence of the specific heat near T N=0.818 K is compared with the predictions for different models. The 2D Ising model describes satisfactorily C(T) below T N, while for T〉T N none of the theoretical models agree with the behavior of C(T) of RbDy(WO4)2. The H-T phase diagram for H∥c is complicated and possesses a triple point, where regions of existence of three magnetic phases converge. The magnetic ordering is analyzed from the standpoint of the Jahn-Teller nature of the structural phase transitions occurring in RbDy(WO4)2 at higher temperatures. It is shown that the form of the phase diagram depends on the direction of the vector H, for the general case of an arbitrary direction of H, two phase transitions can occur with increasing field.

Notes: Abstract The results of measuring the temperature and field dependences of the magnetization of a RbDy(WO4)2 single crystal in the temperature range from 4.2 to 50 K and in magnetic fields up to 1.6 T are presented. The energies of the exchange and dipole-dipole interactions are estimated. The magnetic structure of the ground state is determined.

Notes: Abstract A study is performed of the crystalline structure, magnetization, and magnetotransport properties of the system La2/3Ba1/3(Mn1−x Cox)O3 with perovskite structure. It is shown that cubic solid solutions exist over the entire range of cobalt concentrations 0⩽x⩽1. Compositions with x⩽0.2 are ferromagnets with maximum resistance near T C . Compositions with 0.2〈x〈0.4 manifest properties of inhomogeneous ferromagnets. Measurements of magnetic properties indicate the absence of long-range magnetic order in compositions with 0.5⩽x⩽0.9, which are probably spin glasses. The spontaneous magnetization of cobaltate (2μ B per formula unit) corresponds to ferromagnetic ordering of the moments of the Co3+ and Co4+ ions found in the intermediate spin state. It is conjectured that the magnetoresistance consists of an extrinsic and an intrinsic contribution. The first arises as a result of intergrain transport of spin-polarized charge carriers, and the second, as a result of magnetic ordering near T C . The magnetoresistance is essentially independent of the spontaneous magnetization and decreases abruptly as the cobalt concentration is increased with a corresponding transition from long-range to short-range magnetic order.

Notes: 0.6 K0.4BiO3 single crystal have been performed to study the nature of the growth-induced anisotropy revealed using chemical etching technique. It was found that this anisotropy is responsible for differences in low-field susceptibility and in hysteresis loops observed for different magnetic field orientations.

Notes: Abstract The appearance of superconductivity and the relaxation of T c to the equilibrium value T c ≈30 K in a period of five days were observed in the tetragonal ceramic NdBa2Cu3O6.67 under a pressure of 1 GPa. The superconducting phase vanishes 1.3 h after the pressure is released. This behavior is explained by the charge redistribution occurring as a result of pressure-induced ordering of oxygen in the CuOx planes.

Notes: Abstract The low-temperature thermal and magnetic-resonance properties of a monoclinic KDy(WO4)2 single crystal are investigated. It is established that a structural phase transition takes place at T c=6.38 K. The field dependence of the critical temperature is determined for a magnetic field oriented along the crystallographic a and c axes. The initial part of the H-T phase diagram is plotted for H∥a. The prominent features of the structural phase transition are typical of a second-order Jahn-Teller transition, which is not accompanied by any change in the symmetry of the crystal lattice in the low-temperature phase. The behavior of C(T) in a magnetic field shows that the transition goes to an antiferrodistortion phase. An anomalous increase in the relaxation time (by almost an order of magnitude) following a thermal pulse is observed at T〉T c(H), owing to the structural instability of the lattice. A theoretical model is proposed for the structural phase transition in a magnetic field, and the magnetic-field dependence of T c is investigated for various directions of the field.

Notes: Abstract The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility of Cu3B2O6 single crystals grown by spontaneous crystallization from a melt consisting of a mixture of CuO and B2O3 and the behavior of their magnetization are investigated in magnetic fields up to 55 kOe. A broad susceptibility maximum is observed near 39 K, and a sharp drop in susceptibility is observed at T〈10 K. The paramagnetic Néel temperatures for all orientations of the magnetic field in the crystal investigated are negative, attesting to the predominantly antiferromagnetic character of the exchange interactions. The effective magnetic moment of the Cu2+ ion is anisotropic and lies in the range from 1.054μ B to 1.545μ B. The magnetization depends linearly on magnetic field at T〉10 K, whereas at temperatures below 10 K a discontinuity is observed at fields of the order of 40 kOe. At room temperature, electron magnetic resonance characterized by an almost isotropic g factor (g=2.165) is detected at 36.22 GHz. The exchange interactions in Cu3B2O6 are analyzed on the basis of the Goodenough-Kanamori rules. The possibility of the establishment of a singlet magnetic state in the crystal is analyzed.
