    Notes: The adherence of yeasts to oral mucous cells is one of the main characteristics of the pathogenicity of this fungus. We studies adherence by means of a radiometric test to improve the method. We compared a sample of 40 strains of Candida albicans isolated from the buccal mucosa of HIV-infected patients with 40 strains isolated from non-HIV patients. We found that buccally isolated C.albicans strains from patients in the initial stages of AIDS adhered to oral mucous cells less than the buccally isolated C.albicans strains from subjects without HIV infection. Adherence among the strains of HIV patients increased with the disease stage until it exceeded that of the normal subjects in proportion to the decrease in the CD4/CD8 ratio. The selection of resistant strains by the preliminary antifungal treatments gave us a partial explanation for this increase. Further research should be carried out to compare these results with those obtained from atypical strains and species with high pathogenic potential, such as Candida dubliniensis, which is frequently isolated from advanced AIDS, in order to prevent systemic infections in these patients.

    Notes: We report a new case of pleomorphic fibroma of the skin arising on the face. The lesion was polypoid and fibrous, located on the dermis, and formed by coarse collagen bundles with sparse cells. It was also characterized by the presence of cellular atypia and pleomorphism without mitosis. Immunohistochemistry showed staining for vimentin and actin and negativity for S-100, CD34, CD68, α-1-antichymotrypsin and α-1-antitrypsin antigens, supporting a myofibroblastic origin. A few isolated cells also showed granular cytoplasmic detection of factor XIIIa. Although the disorder has been previously considered to be a tumour of preferential localization on the trunk or extremities, this does not always hold true as four of the 14 reported cases arose on the head. Pleomorphic fibroma is a benign condition and is we believe a variant of sclerotic fibroma.

    Notes: Generalized (diffuse) plane xanthoma (GPX) is a nor-molipacmic xanthomatosis that is very frequently associated with a haematological disorder, and especially with monoclonal gammapathies, which it may precede by several months or years. Here, we report a case of GPX associated with idiopathic Bence–Jones proteinuria, a very rare type of monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance. To our knowledge, this association has not been previously described.

    Notes: Abstract— This paper analyses the validity of the fracture mechanics approach to hydrogen assisted cracking in metals on the basis of K-dominance over both the stress-strain state and the accumulation of hydrogen in the fracture process zone. Stress-strain assisted diffusion of hydrogen is considered as the rate controlling factor of hydrogen assisted cracking under sustained or quasi-static loading conditions. The discrepancy in the crack tip zone between the far-field affected diffusion and the asymptotically driven (K-controlled) process is elucidated. The far field (i.e., the stress-strain field which is not K-dominated) is shown to have a minor effect on near-tip hydrogen diffusion. It can only widen the scatter band of crack growth rates in the near-threshold portion of the crack growth kinetics curve.

    Notes: Abstract The fracture behaviour in air and aggressive environments of two eutectoid steels in the forms of hot-rolled bar and cold drawn wire has been compared to elucidate the consequences of cold drawing on their susceptibility to environmentally assisted cracking (EAC) in aqueous environments. Cold drawing produces a microstructural effect on the material: a preferential orientation of the pearlite lamellae aligned parallel to the cold-drawing direction, resulting in anisotropic properties with regard to fracture behaviour in air and aggressive environments. The main consequence is the change in crackpropagation direction approaching that of the wire axis (cold-drawing direction or main average orientation of the pearlite lamellae) and producing a mixed-mode state. The results reported provide insight into the macro- and micro-mechanical effects of cold drawing on the fracture and EAC-behaviour of eutectoid pearlitic steels.

    Notes: Abstract Composts prepared from mixtures of bagasse + filter mud (BF) and bagasse + vinasses + filter mud (BVF) were evaluated for suppressiveness to Pythium aphanidermatum in climatic chamber experiments. Twenty five-g samples of BF and BVF composts in plastic pots (130 mL) were infested with 1,000 oospores of P. aphanidermatum produced on oat meal agar. After 1, 15, 30 and 45 days, survival of the fungus was estimated by measuring inoculum density. Disease incidence was appraised on cucumber (Cucumis sativus) “Vert Long Anglais” seedlings raised on the composts. Propagules of P. aphanidermatum surviving in the compost after 24 hr was estimated at 22 and 18 cfu g−1 dry wt. potting mix, for BF and BVF, respectively. This population decreased significantly to 6–7 cfu g−1 of compost for the 15–45-d incubation treatment. Seedling mortality was not observed in uninfested controls. In uninfested treatments, 40 and 67% of seedlings died for the 1-d incubation treatment in BVF and BF, respectively; no mortality was recorded thereafter. Heat treatment of the composts revealed that the suppressive effect was biological in nature. Quantitative reduction of micro-organisms occurred in pasteurized composts (55°C for 2 h), compared to the populations in unheated controls. However the greatest decrease was observed for fungal populations. The main fungal species observed in unheated, suppressive composts were Aspergillus sp., Geotrichum sp. and a non-sporulating Pythium. The last two species disappeared in pasteurized, conducive composts.
