Notes: Abstract Fine and coarse alumina powder mixtures (non-additive specimen) and those containing the additive formed liquid phase during firing (additive specimen) were compacted and fired at 1400–1600°C. Liquid phase sintering proceeded markedly at 1400–1500°C and additive specimens had much higher relative density than non-additive specimens at 1500°C. As the liquid phase sintering proceeded, the open pore volume decreased abruptly, but the open pore size changed depending on the packing structure. The open pore size decreased in the specimens where the fine particles formed matrix structure, while it increased in the specimens where the coarse particles formed skeletal structure. At 1600°C all additive specimens having different mixing ratios of fine and coarse powders had similar microstructure and the same relative density of 97%. However, spherical large pores were formed and remained in all additive specimens even at 1600°C. The bending strength of those specimens was about 400 MPa.

Notes: Abstract Neuropathological findings in two siblings with familial erythrophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (FEL) are reported. Case 1 showed the typical neuropathological findings of FEL with lymphohistiocytic infiltration of the leptomeninges and perivascular spaces. A characteristic erythrophagocytosis was detected in inguinal lymph nodes, lung and bone marrow. Case 2 revealed calcification and necrotic lesions in the brain. In the necrotic areas, parenchymal calcification, vascular medial calcification, and occlusion of many vessels due to subendothelial fibrosis were detected. The areas of necrosis correlated with the distribution of occluded vessels. These changes were most prominent in putamen, internal capsule, thalamus and dentate nucleus. Hypercytokinemia is suspected to be the underlying mechanism for the clinical and laboratory findings in patients with FEL, although the relationship to the vascular pathology is unclear.

Notes: Abstract  Enzyme activities and transcripts of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) were analyzed in a single recessive rice (Oryza sativa L.) mutant with reduced ADH activity (rad). It has been previously demonstrated that all ADH isozymes are below the level of detection in aerobically grown rad seedlings (Matsumura et al. 1995). The present study showed that ADH activity was anaerobically inducible in rad seedlings and predominantly localized in the roots, mainly in the root-cap region. The lowest band (ADH2 homodimer) of the ADH isozymes was observed in submerged rad seedlings. Although two isozymes (the ADH1 homodimer and heterodimer), abundant in the wild-type, were lost in this mutant, Adh1 mRNA was produced normally in aerated or submerged rad plants. Protein analysis showed that the amount of ADH protein was reduced in rad seedlings. Most likely, Adh1 mRNA was not translated or else its product was unstable in rad plants. The viability of submerged rad seedlings was evaluated by the growth and greening of the shoots. Our results showed that rad seedlings were more vulnerable to a long-term submergence stress than wild-type seedlings.

Notes: Abstract The previously described method involving the use of transient DSC was applied to pharmaceutical powder compacts and to ceramic powder compacts. The samples were prepared by compressing powders of pentaerythritol tetraacetate and two kinds of alumina powder (differing in particle size distribution) up to a pressure of 20 MPa by using a jig. For pentaerythritol tetraacetate, a linear relationship was obtained between the parameter obtained by DSC and the compaction pressure.
