Notes: Abstract. Background: To describe computed tomographic (CT), magnetic resonance (MR), ultrasonographic (US), and angiographic findings of retroperitoneal malignant mesenchymoma with emphasis on CT findings. Methods: Five CT, four US, four angiography, and two MR studies were obtained in five patients with pathologically proven retroperitoneal malignant mesenchymoma. Results: Tumors were larger than 10 cm (n = 4), well-cimcumscribed and heterogeneous (n = 4), and with massive intratumorous calcifications (n = 3) on plain CT or US. Tumors showed heterogeneous enhancement on contrast-enhanced CT scans (n = 4) and moderate hypervascularity with heterogeneous staining on angiography (n = 3). Tumors were essentially hypointense on T1-weighted MR images (n = 2) and heterogeneous hyperintense on T2-weighted MR images (n = 2). Plain CT showed a fat-dense structure in a tumor in one patient. Conclusions: The radiologic findings of large expansile heterogeneous masses in the retroperitoneum, especially with massive calcifications, were considered to be typical of malignant mesenchymomas. Notes: B as well as N core excitation spectra of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) have been studied by means of x-ray Raman scattering (XRS) spectroscopy. Transitions from 1s core to σ* and π* states are completely distinguished by anisotropy measurements of XRS, thus making an unambiguous assignment to the symmetries of excited states and offering a sound basis to characterize h-BN with core absorption spectroscopy. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The reproductive cycle and sexual maturity of the anglerfish Lophiomus setigerus were examined. Spermatids were released from the germinal cysts into the lumina of the seminal lobules, and both spermatids and spermatozoa were present in the lumina of the seminal lobules and sperm ducts. Spermatogenesis and vitellogenesis occurred throughout most of the year. The testes of males were full of spermatozoa throughout the year, with spawning from May to November. Males and females reached sexual maturity at a mean total length and age of 178 mm, 3.3 years and 303 mm, 6.1 years, respectively. There were clear seasonal cycles in the gonadosomatic index (IG) and hepatosomatic index (IH) in females. The mean IG of females increased rapidly with ovarian development while the mean IH decreased from the middle of vitellogenesis to final maturation. Mean values of IG and IH in males increased with testicular development.

Notes: The ovarian structure and batch fecundity of anglerfish Lophiomus setigerus were examined from specimens collected in the East China Sea during March 1991 to September 1995. The right and left ovarian lobes were connected at their posterior ends. Stalk-like ovigerous lamellae protruded from the ovarian wall. During the spawning season, gelatinous material was secreted from the epithelia of both the ovigerous lamellae and ovarian wall, and these epithelia showed morphological changes accompanying the ovarian maturation cycle. Tertiary yolk, migratory nucleus, and mature stage oocytes occurred in the ovaries between May and November, when females with postovulatory follicles and developing vitellogenic oocytes were collected also. These results suggested an extended spawning season during which females undergo repeated spawnings. When the most advanced oocytes attained the secondary yolk stage, they formed a batch that separated from the adjacent group of smaller oocytes. Batch fecundity (F) in 20 females with secondary yolk stage ovaries was related to total length (LT, mm) as F= 556.2 LT1.157 (300≤LT≤396).

Notes: Abstract Background: We have performed endoscopic mucosal resection of the esophagus (172 cases), stomach (102 cases), and colon (28 cases) using a transparent plastic cap. Because the lesion-bearing mucosa is suctioned up inside the cap under endoscopic suction, the mucosa should be dissected sufficiently from the proper muscle layer to prevent perforation. Methods: To avert the risk of perforation, we introduced endosonographic assessment of submucosal dissection (47 cases). In all cases, just keeping the ultrasonic probe on the surface of the mucosa allowed us to evaluate whether the mucosal lesion was lifted up sufficiently from the proper muscle layer after local saline injection. Results: It was possible to confirm that the muscle layer was kept outside the strangulating snare by the same procedure (32 of 37 cases, 86.5%). Conclusions: We experienced five muscular resections in cases without the ultrasonic probe and no muscular resection with the ultrasonic probe. Thus we recommend endosonographic assessment during endoscopic mucosal resection to enhance its safety.

Notes: Abstract The carbohydrate-deficient glycoprotein syndrome is a newly recognised genetic disorder characterised by mental retardation, liver disfunction during infancy, cerebellar ataxia and atrophy, polyneuropathy, growth retardation, stroke-like episodes, and the appearance of carbohydrate-deficient fractions of multiple glycoproteins in the serum. The neuroradiological findings have been known as features of olivopontocerebellar atrophy. However, whether the abnormalities in the cerebellum and brain stem progress after birth is not known. We have carried out serial CT and MRI on three Japanese patients with this syndrome at different ages. A small cerebellum, with peculiar enlargement of the cisterna magna, and a small brain stem are present in infancy and atrophy of the anterior vermis and from before backwards in the cerebellar hemispheres seem to progress throughout early childhood.

Notes: Abstract. We have designed a new abdominal wall lifter for gasless laparoscopic surgery which consists of stainless steel rods and iron lifters. They elevate the abdominal wall up like a dome-type camping tent, which does not disturb any manipulation of scope or X-ray camera. We received a good view of the peritoneal cavity without CO2 gas insufflation in ten patients with cholecystitis. This will be helpful for general laparoscopic surgery or laparoscopic assisted surgery with the use of conventional forceps or extracorporeal suturing through a valveless trocar.
