Notes: Abstract We report a rare case of an inflammatory fibroid polyp (IFP) of the esophagus associated with an extensive early mucosal carcinoma. At esophagoscopy, a polypoid lesion 2 cm in length, and a non-stained area detected by the Lugol iodine spray staining method were found in the mid-thoracic portion, and esophagectomy was performed. Endoscopic polypectomy is thought to be useful for the diagnosis of IFP, but it should be kept in mind that IFP may be concomitant with carcinoma. Indeed, in our patient, early esophageal carcinoma was discovered because of the symptoms of dysphagia induced by the IFP.

Notes: Abstract We report the skull radiograph, CT and MRI findings in three patients with lymphocytic adenohypophysitis mimicking pituitary adenoma. All cases were associated with pregnancy. CT demonstrated a pituitary mass but did not differentiate lymphocytic adenohypophysitis from pituitary adenoma. The skull radiographs showed either a normal sella turcica or minimal abnormalities; they did not show ballooning or destruction. The MRI appearances were distinctive: relatively low signal on T1-weighted images; preservation of the bright posterior pituitary lobe despite the presence of a relatively large pituitary mass, less common in macroadenomas; marked contrast enhancement compared with pituitary macroadenomas; and dural enhancement adjacent to a pituitary mass.

Notes: Abstract  β-Amylase deficiency in various cultivars of rice was examined at the molecular level. Using an antibody against β-amylase purified from germinating seeds of rice, we were able to demonstrate the expression and organization of the β-amylase gene in normal and deficient cultivars. Although β-amylase is a starch-hydrolyzing enzyme, as is α-amylase, the β-amylase protein/gene is expressed differently from the α-amylase protein/gene; i.e. (1) β-amylase is synthesized only in aleurone cells, (2) the enzyme production in the embryo-less half-seeds is not under hormonal control. We identified some cultivars of rice that are deficient for β-amylase activity. We present new evidence that synthesis is blocked at the level of mRNA synthesis in the deficient cultivars. The usefulness of β-amylase as a crop trait is also discussed.

Notes: Abstract Influence of rice cultivars on CH4 emissions from a paddy field was studied using four Japonica types, two Indica types, and two Japonica/Indica F1 hybrids. In addition, the suppression of CH4 emission by interrupting irrigation at the flowering stage was investigated. Patterns of seasonal variation in CH4 emission rates were similar among the eight cultivars. Two of the Japonica types showed the maximum and minimum CH4 emissions among the cultivars investigated. Neither the number of tillers, shoot length, shoot weight, and root weight correlated with the CH4 emission rates at the tillering and reproductive growth stages. Following temporary interruption of irrigation at the flowering stage, CH4 emission rates decreased drastically and remained at very low levels until the harvesting stage, indicating its great effectiveness for the suppression of CH4 emission from rice paddies.
