Notes: Abstract Previous investigations have reported that bacterial suspension cultures grow to higher stationary concentrations in space flight than on Earth; however, none of these investigations included extensive ground controls under varied inertial conditions. This study includes extensive controls and cell-growth data taken at several times during lag phase, log phase, and stationary phase of Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis. The Marquardt-Levenberg, least-squares fitting algorithm was used to calculate kinetic growth parameters from the logistic bacterial growth equations for space-flight and control growth curves. Space-flight cultures grew to higher stationary-phase concentrations and had shorter lag-phase durations. Also, evidence was found for increased exponential growth rate in space.

Notes: Does religious and denominational background still affect earnings and human capital investment? Several earlier studies suggest that they do, but all of these previous studies were conducted on data from the 1970s and early 1980s. Examines religious background and human capital formation for a sample of males from the National Longitudinal Survey Youth Cohort (1991). Provides survey information that makes it possible to control better the many components of family background in order to isolate the impact of religion and denomination. Uses the estimation of human capital earnings functions similar to Tomes' (1984) method. Finds that men raised as Catholics or Jews have higher incomes than men raised as Protestants, other things being held equal. When the dependent variable used for the analysis is the logarithm of hourly wages, men raised either as Catholics or Jews were also found to have higher wages. Contains results from analyses of men within various Protestant denominations, as well as results for different racial and ethnic groups.

Notes: We report 12 cases of contact sensitivity to the flavouring agents menthol and peppermint oil in patients presenting with intra-oral symptoms in association with burning mouth syndrome, recurrent oral ulceration or a lichenoid reaction. The patients were referred from the Glasgow Dental Hospital over a 4-year period for assessment of the possible contribution of contact sensitivity to their complaints. 5 patients with burning mouth syndrome demonstrated contact sensitivity to menthol and/or peppermint, with 1 patient sensitive to both agents, 3 positive to menthol only and 1 to peppermint only. 4 cases with recurrent intra-oral ulceration were sensitive to both menthol and peppermint. 3 patients with an oral lichenoid reaction were positive to menthol on patch testing, with 2 also sensitive to peppermint. 9 of the 12 cases demonstrated additional positive patch test results. After a mean follow-up of 32.7 months (range 9–48 months), of the 9 patients that could be contacted, 6 patients described clearance or improvement of their symptoms as a consequence of avoidance of menthol/peppermint.

Notes: 1. Experiments were conducted on cultured renal arterial smooth muscle cells to determine the ability of extracellular ATP to alter cytosolic calcium concentration and to determine the mechanisms by which this effect occurs.2. ATP (100 μmol/L) caused the fluorescence ratio of fura-2 to increase from a control value of 1.06±0.05 to 2.06±0.13 (P〈0.01) before stabilizing at a sustained level of 1.35±0.04 (n= 8; P〈0.05).3. Removal of extracellular calcium from the bathing medium resulted in an attenuation of the initial response to 100 μmol/L ATP with cell fluorescence increasing from 1.16±0.18 to 1.44±0.18 ratio units (n= 5). Furthermore, the initial increase in fluorescence ratio rapidly declined to 1.02±0.06, indicating that an influx of extracellular calcium is required to sustain the increase in fura-2 fluorescence.4. Depletion of intracellular calcium pools with thapsigargin prevented the increase in fura-2 fluorescence evoked by ATP.5. These data suggest that ATP-mediated increases in cytosolic calcium in cultured renal arterial smooth muscle cells involve calcium release from the thapsigargin-sensitive, intracellular pool in conjunction with calcium influx from the extracellular medium.

Notes: This prospective study was undertaken to determine whether the 2-mm punch biopsy technique yields specimens of sufficient size and quality to allow a reliable histologicai diagnosis to be made. A histopathological comparison was made between tissue obtained from a 2-mm punch biopsy and a standard ellipse biopsy taken from a wide range of dermatoses and benign and malignant skin rumours. In 7J of the 84 cases studied, the same histopathological diagnosis was reached with the 2-mm punch biopsy and the standard ellipse. Use of the 2-mm punch biopsy technique produces specimens which allow an accurate histological diagnosis to be made in a wide range of dermatological conditions.

Notes: We report the case of a 72-year-old male patient who developed a florid photosensitive eruption while on ranitidine therapy. Ultraviolet A sensitivity was detected by irradiation monochromator testing, suggesting drug-induced photosensitivity. Ranitidine was concluded to be the cause of his photosensitivity since the eruption resolved and the phototest abnormalities returned to normal following cessation of therapy. Similar cases have been reported to the Committee on Safety of Medicines but not published.

Notes: Two patients developed classical erythema multiforme while taking oral terbinafine. A case of Stevens-Johnson syndrome occurring after terbinafine therapy has recently been described, but there have been no published reports of an association with erythema multiforme until now.

Notes: Abstract The repeated administration of amphetamine (AMPH) results in a pattern of behavioral changes which includes an augmentation of some behaviors, generally referred to as behavioral sensitization. Some investigators have suggested that an increased dopamine (DA) response to AMPH challenge may underlie behavioral sensitization, while others have reported behavioral sensitization in the absence of an enhanced DA response. Because temporal and dosage parameters of the AMPH pretreatment regimen have been suggested to play a role in the appearance of an enhanced DA response, we utilized a variety of AMPH pretreatment regimens to assess the relationship between pretreatment dose of AMPH, duration of withdrawal and the DA response in caudate-putamen and nucleus accumbens to a subsequent AMPH challenge. Under our experimental conditions, behavioral sensitization was observed after each of these treatments in the absence of an enhanced DA response in either brain region.

Notes: Abstract The role of gravity in the autolysis of Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli was studied by growing cells on Earth and in microgravity on Space Station Mir. Autolysis analysis was completed by examining the death phase or exponential decay of cells for approximately 4 months following the stationary phase. Consistent with published findings, the stationary-phase cell population was 170% and 90% higher in flight B. subtilis and E. coli cultures, respectively, than in ground cultures. Although both flight autolysis curves began at higher cell densities than control curves, the rate of autolysis in flight cultures was identical to that of their respective ground control rates.
