    Notizen: Abstract  We present the case report of a diabetic 51-year-old male, who presented with painless mobilization of the superior incisor teeth. The X-ray study showed osteolysis, without any soft tissue mass, in craniofacial and orbital bones. In the control X-ray studies performed during the 2 years’ evolution, a progressive increase in the intensity and extension of the osteolysis was observed. The diagnosis of progressive idiopathic osteolysis is one of exclusion, based mainly on clinico-radiological findings, evolution and compatible histological findings.

    Notizen: Abstract A "quick" prevalence study of intractable diarrhoea (defined as diarrhoea lasting more than 3 weeks and dependent on parenteral nutrition [PN] for more than 50% of daily caloric intake) was conducted by FAX. All 35 paediatric gastroenterology services which had been contacted answered questionnaire sent by FAX. 20 cases of intractable diarrhoea were identified in 9 centres. In 12 cases PN was administered at home, the other 8 cases being treated as inpatients for an average duration of 9.5 months. A diagnosis had been established in 11 out of 20 cases. Auto-immune enteropathy was the most frequent diagnosis (5 cases); congenital microvillous atrophy (3 cases); chronic pseudo-obstruction (2 cases) and multiple food intolerance (1 case). Undefinied 9/20 cases presented atrophy of intestinal mucosa. The age of the beginning of diarrhoea varied from 2 days to 12 years, but was more than 16 months only in some cases with auto-immune enteropathy. Conclusion Intractable diarrhoea has a low prevalence in Italy and remains a rare but very intricating problem. Long-term PN is recommended in most cases: auto-immune enteropathy is the most frequent cause but in about half of the cases the aetiopathogenetic diagnosis is still not defined.

    Notizen: Abstract Anti-endomysium antibody (AEA) was evaluated in 136 subjects by indirect immunofluorescence using both cryosections of monkey oesophagus (MO) and the human umbilical cord vein (HUCV) as substrate. This human tissue gave results comparable to those of MO. In particular, the HUCV sections showed positive results in all 22 newly diagnosed cases of coeliac disease. Compared to the MO sections, the sensitivity, specificity and positive predictive values of HUCV tissue was 100%. Conclusion HUCV tissue can replace MO for AEA detection and can make the screening for coeliac disease easier both in at-risk and in normal populations, with a remarkable saving, both in terms of money and of monkeys.

    Notizen: Abstract The Carotid Atherosclerosis Italian Ultrasound Study (CAIUS) is a multicenter double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized investigation of the effects of Pravastatin on progression of asymptomatic carotid atherosclerosis in outpatients with moderate hypercholesterolemia and without symptoms or signs of coronary heart disease. Intima-Media Thickness changes of the carotid arteries will be evaluated by B-mode ultrasound imaging. This method allows the detection and monitoring of early lesions and their evolution over time. The study involves approximately 305 patients with moderate hypercholesterolemia, and at least one asymptomatic and uncomplicated early carotid artery lesion. Randomized subjects are in the age range between 45 and 65 yrs. For women a natural or artificial menopause was mandatory. The subjects were randomized to receive either a placebo or an HMG CoA reductase inhibitor (Pravastin 40 mg OD), known to act selectively and primarily on liver cholesterol biosynthesis. The patient follow-up of CAIUS will have a duration of at least 36 months. Every 6 months participating subjects are being monitored by B-mode ultrasound as described in the protocol requiring training and certification of sonographers/readers and centralized reading. The study offers a unique opportunity to monitor the natural history of asymptomatic carotid lesions in hypercholesterolemic patients, as well as to evaluate the effect of a potent cholesterol-lowering medication on progression or regression of carotid atherosclerosis.

    Notizen: Abstract High spin states up toJ=14 and excitation energy up toE *=3076 keV have been observed in the odd-odd nucleus100Tc with the reaction96Zr(7Li, 3n), at bombarding energies between 21 and 31 MeV, by in-beam γ spectroscopy and conversion-electron measurements. A ΔJ=1 negative parity band similar to that observed in theN=57 isotone102Rh, and based on the 8−, 708 keV state has been identified. The observed band can be interpreted in terms of collective core excitations based on a two-quasiparticle state of(πg9/2 ⊗ νh11/2) configuration. Comparison with IBFM-2 calculations have been performed.
