Notes: Abstract. Laser ablation of polyaniline in its conducting and isolating form revealed very similar ablation properties upon irradiation at 308 nm. Both types of polymer film can be structured with high resolution at high fluences. The ablation craters have sharp contours and no debris contaminates the surrounding area. At low fluences the creation of cone structures is observed. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals the carbonization of the surface upon laser ablation. As preferred decomposition sites the imine groups in doped and undoped polyaniline are identified.

Notes: This paper reports a detailed molecular beam study of the dissociative sticking of methane incident on clean Ni(100). It is demonstrated that the sticking coefficient depends strongly on the translational energy of the molecule. It is also observed that an increase in the vibrational energy of the methane leads to a dramatic enhancement of the sticking, emphasizing that the initial vibrational state is of crucial importance. These results are consistent with a mechanism of direct activated dissociative chemisorption where the dynamics is dominated by a barrier in the potential energy surface mainly located in the vibrational coordinates. Normal-energy scaling is only approximately observed. The effect of surface temperature is also investigated but is found to be smaller than activation by translational or vibrational energy. A simplified analysis in terms of state resolved sticking curves, Sν(Ei), considering only the vibrational C–H stretch modes of methane as relevant for the sticking, gives a good description of the data. These sticking curves enables a calculation of the thermal sticking coefficient which is found to be in excellent agreement with bulb experiments directly probing this. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract. The laser ablation of polyimide was studied using 308 nm laser irradiation ≤225 mJ cm-2. Confocal Raman microscopy revealed the deposition of carbon surrounding the ablation crater, which consists of amorphous carbon with some crystalline features. Inside the crater, graphitic material was detected on top of the cones, very similar to the material from cw-Ar+ ion laser irradiation. FT-Raman measurements reveal the presence of intermediates of the polyimide decomposition. Imaging-X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the deposition of carbon material surrounding the ablation crater and showed that the oxygen and nitrogen contents of the remaining material decrease.

Notes: Abstract. Using a rather complete description of the in-medium ρ spectral function – being constrained by various independent experimental information – we calculate pertinent dilepton production rates from hot and dense hadronic matter. The strong broadening of the ρ resonance entails a reminiscence to perturbative q¯q annihilation rates in the vicinity of the phase boundary. The application to dilepton observables in Pb(158AGeV)+Au collisions – incorporating recent information on the hadro-chemical composition at CERN-SpS energies – essentially supports the broadening scenario. Possible implications for the nature of chiral symmetry restoration are outlined.
