    Notes: Abstract. This study examined bone density among postmenopausal Buddhist nuns and female religious followers of Buddhism in southern Taiwan and related the measurements to subject characteristics including age, body mass, physical activity, nutrient intake, and vegetarian practice. A total of 258 postmenopausal Taiwanese vegetarian women participated in the study. Lumbar spine and femoral neck bone mineral density (BMD) were measured using dual-photon absorptimetry. BMD measurements were analyzed first as quantitative outcomes in multiple regression analyses and next as indicators of osteopenia status in logistic regression analyses. Among the independent variables examined, age inversely and body mass index positively correlated with both the spine and femoral neck BMD measurements. They were also significant predictors of the osteopenia status. Energy intake from protein was a significant correlate of lumbar spine BMD only. Other nutrients, including calcium and energy intake from nonprotein sources, did not correlate significantly with the two bone density parameters. Long-term practitioners of vegan vegetarian were found to be at a higher risk of exceeding lumbar spine fracture threshold (adjusted odds ratio = 2.48, 95% confidence interval = 1.03–5.96) and of being classified as having osteopenia of the femoral neck (3.94, 1.21–12.82). Identification of effective nutrition supplements may be necessary to improve BMD levels and to reduce the risk of osteoporosis among long-term female vegetarians.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of oxide dopant on the structure of 62ZrF4-30BaF2-8LaF3 (mol%) glass by equimolar substitution of BaO for BaF2 was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The XPS spectra of La 3d, Ba 3d, F 1s, O 1s and Zr 3d were measured. From the deconvoluted results for the XPS spectra of elements in the glass, it was proposed that the oxide ions added to the glass mainly bond to Zr4+ and replace the bridging fluoride ions resulting in the formation of the F-Zr-O bond. Further analyses indicated that the oxide ions mainly play a non-bridging role instead of a bridging role in the glass structure.

    Notes: Abstract Radiation-induced changes in the microstructure of lead silicate glass were investigated in situ under Mg Kα irradiation in an ultra-high vacuum (UHV) environment by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Lead-oxygen bond breaking resulting in the formation of pure lead was observed. The segregation, growth kinetics and the structural relaxation of the lead, with corresponding changes in the oxygen and silicon on the glass surfaces were studied by measuring the time-dependent changes in concentration, binding energy shifts, and the full width at half maximum. A bimodal distribution of the oxygen XPS signal, caused by bridging and non-bridging oxygens, was found during the relaxation process. All experimental data indicate a reduction of the oxygen concentration, a phase separation of the lead from the glass matrix, and the metallization of the lead occurred during and after the X-ray irradiation.

    Notes: Trimethylsilane (TMSiH) was adsorbed onto a Ge(100) surface at a temperature of -150±3°C and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to study the resulting surface species as functions of the TMSiH exposure in Langmuir (L). The core-level C 1s, Si 2p and Ge 3d photoelectrons were monitored after each dosing. It was observed that the C-C bonds are the dominant species formed at the low doses of TMSiH. The second abundant species at the low coverage is the C-Ge bond. This indicated dissociative adsorption of TMSiH molecules onto a clean Ge(100) surface, which is similar to the adsorption of TMSiH molecules onto an Si(100) surface. As the dose increases, the Si-C species gradually increase due to physisorbed TMSiH on top of the C-C- and C-Ge-covered surface. This study clearly reveals the growth processes of TMSiH on a Ge(100) surface. The electronegativities of C, Si and Ge and the bond strengths of C-C, C-Si and C-Ge were invoked to discuss the initial formation of C-C and C-Ge on the Ge(100) surface. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
