Notes: Abstract  The δ13C-values of organic acids and their correlations to those of the sugar and ethanol, respectively, from 57 EU data bank wines of the Rheinpfalz area (years 1991 – 1993) and from some of their corresponding musts have been determined. In addition to the well established difference between fermented sugar and ethanol (Δδ13C = –1.7±0.2‰), a new constant correlation was found in wine for ethanol and citric acid (Δδ13C = +2.4±0.4‰). From this result a fixed δ-value difference for citric acid in wine to the fermented sugar of +0.7±0.6‰ can be deduced. The δ13C-values of L-malic acid and L-tartaric acid in must were not altered by the alcoholic fermentation; they should therefore directly provide access to the δ13C-value of the natural sugar in must. However, in non-adulterated wines the expected δ13C-value differences between these acids and ethanol showed unsatisfactory correlation coefficients. For L-malate this is attributed to the secondary (partial) degradation of this acid by the malolactic fermentation; a corresponding correction is envisaged in order to make L-malate available as an internal standard. As a reason for the unsatisfactory correlation between L-tartaric acid and ethanol, it is supposed that the time of its maximum biosynthesis period does not coincide with that of glucose in the grape ripening period.

Notes: Summary We have studied experimentally the coherent exciton-photon dynamics in a single, a double, and a quintuple quantum well structure under resonant excitation. In pump and probe experiments we observe an initial fast decay of the exciton population. This initial decay depends on the number of quantum wells. The population decay is accompanied by a coherent light emission induced by the first-order polarization, the intensity of which increases quadratically with the quantum well number. Interference effects and electromagnetic coupling effects between polarizations located in distinct quantum wells probably play a crucial role in the superlinear coherent emission process.

Notes: Abstract In 185 adults (68 white and 31 black males, 66 white and 20 black females), total body bone mineral density and content and body fat% were measured by two dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) systems—Norland XR-26, software version 2.4, and Lunar DPX, software versions 3.4 and 3.6. In a subgroup of 18 males (10 white, 8 black), body fat% and total body calcium were also measured by in vivo neutron activation analysis (IVNA). For total body calcium, the DPX 3.4 system gave the highest (1239 g), IVNA the lowest (1195 g), and the XR-26 (1226 g) was not significantly different from the DPX 3.6 results. For fat%, the XR-26 system gave the highest estimate (23.5%), whereas measurements by the DPX 3.4 and 3.6 systems (17.4 and 18.2%) were similar to the IVNA measurements (18.3%). BMD and BMC measurements by the two DXA systems were highly correlated but significantly different for the entire studied population except in the case of BMC in black males.

Notes: Abstract The most common causes of posterior and posterolateral knee pain (besides referred pain) are knee joint effusions, tendinitis of the hamstring tendons, Baker cyst (semimembranous cyst), bursitis, meniscal pathologies such as tears and ganglions and lesions of the anterior cruciate ligament. Less common causes include popliteus and gastrocnemius tendinitis, arthrofibrosis after trauma. posterior cruciate ligament sprains. deep venous thrombosis and/or irritations of the common peroneal nerve. We present one patient with posterolateral knee pain after a minor contusion. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a degenerated posterfor horn of the lateral meniscus and a somewhat unclear polypoid structure in the intercondylar region. As the posterior component of the pain persisted even after an arthroscopic partial meniscectomy, an operative revision was performed. A small ganglion of the sheath of the popliteus tendon was found and excised. The patient was immediately relieved of his pain after this procedure. To our knowledge this is the first report concerning a ganglion of the sheath of the popliteus tendon causing posterior knee pain. A similar pathology of the popliteus tendon has been described earlier but at a different localisation (in the hiatus), simulating a parameniscal cyst.

Notes: Abstract  The centromere of maize chromosome 4 was previously localized to a 26-cM interval using molecular markers and B-A translocations. The objective of the present study was to refine the placement of the centromere using secondary trisomics. Two independently isolated secondary trisomics (having an isochromosome plus two normal homologs) for 4S were recovered. RFLP analysis of populations segregating for them placed the centromere of chromosome 4 between bnl15.45 and bnl7.20, two RFLP loci that are 5.4-cM apart on the UMC map and 11.5-cM apart on the BNL map.

Description / Table of Contents: Resumé.
Notes: Summary. Relative shortening of the fibula may occur after any type of ankle fracture when the lateral malleolus is involved. Patients complain of pain and restriction of their daily and sporting activities. Clinically, there is valgus of the hind foot due to abduction and lateral rotation of the talus. The goal of treatment is to restore the initial length of the fibula by a horizontal or Z-osteotomy, which will also correct the malposition of the talus. This study shows that the operative reconstruction of a widened mortise is a relatively safe procedure, independent of the type of osteotomy used. Lengthening of the fibula is an important step in the treatment of the painful ankle when the fibula is short after trauma, even when degenerative changes of the joint are already present.

Notes: Abstract  In seven patients who sustained eight distal femoral fractures following knee arthroplasty all fractures were treated operatively. Seven with open reduction internal fixation and one with external fixation. Seven of eight fractures had an unsatisfactory result. This was due not only to bone quality and fracture comminution, but also to technical problems and choice of implant. Revision surgery is often required.
