Notes: Abstract During the summer of 1995, we investigated the response of mud crab megalopae (Panopeus herbstii Milne-Edwards) to cues associated with adult habitat. Natural rock/shell substratum and the rock-associated seaweed, Fucus vesiculosus L., both induced metamorphosis of competent megalopae; natural sand substratum did not induce metamorphosis. Structural mimics of preferred substrata induced metamorphosis only when covered with natural biofilm. Clean mimics did not induce metamorphosis. Water-soluble exudates from preferred substrata showed weak induction of metamorphosis. Exudates from adult P. herbstii elicited a similar weak response. Exudates from another species of crab and from two fish predators did not induce metamorphosis. We conclude that water-soluble cues associated with major components of preferred adult habitat induce the metamorphic molt of P. herbstii megalopae. The three-dimensional structure of the substratum is not important in induction of metamorphosis, but the biofilm associated with preferred substratum plays a critical role. It is not clear whether the biofilm produces the water-soluble cue or simply provides a tactile stimulus that works in conjunction with the soluble cue.

Notes: The structure of the ground and lowest two excited states of H2NO have been determined in large scale configuration interaction calculations using a multiconfiguration self-consistent description of the molecular orbitals. These treatments are based on a systematic building of the correlation contribution which has been designed to account for the characteristics of the nitroxide group. This approach shows that the aminoxyl functional group is more than a three electron group shared by two atoms, but, in fact, a nine electron entity. Our best estimate of the geometry of the ground electronic state, obtained after second-order configuration interaction using a large basis of atomic natural orbitals, is pyramidal. However, since the potential depth between 0° and 40° is lower or of the same order of magnitude as the estimated inversion frequency, the conclusion that this molecule behaves like a planar system is totally justified. The structure of the excited (n−π*) and (π−π*) states have been determined and the transitions energies are in accordance with the experimental results on the highly substituted stable nitroxide radicals. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The photoluminescence spectra of crystalline silicon samples are measured for temperatures below 1000 K. The optical transitions are analyzed in terms of excitonic and band-to-band transitions. From the modeling of the line shape we are able to determine the fundamental indirect band gap for temperatures up to 750 K. The temperature dependence follows the Varshni equation with Eg(0)=1.1692 eV, α=(4.9±0.2)×10−4 eV/K and β=(655±40) K. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: [Auszug] Optical fibres doped with lanthanide or transition-metal elements can serve as in-line lasers and amplifiers for fibre-optic telecommunications systems. In general, most such fibre lasers use conventional silica-glass fibres doped with erbium or neodymium. But silicon dioxide absorbs strongly ...

Notes: The ground- and excited-state properties of both gas phase and crystalline ruthenocene, Ru(cp)2, are investigated using density functional theory. A symmetry-based technique is employed to calculate the energies of the multiplet splittings of the singly excited triplet states. For the crystalline system, a Buckingham potential is introduced to describe the intermolecular interactions between a given Ru(cp)2 molecule and its first shell of neighbors. The overall agreement between experimental and calculated ground- and excited-state properties is very good as far as absolute transition energies, the Stokes shift and the geometry of the excited states are concerned. An additional energy lowering in the 3B2 component of the 5a1′→4e1″ excited state is obtained when the pseudolinear geometry of Ru(cp)2 is relaxed along the low-frequency bending vibration. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Background Both genetic and environmental influences have been suggested to control the immunoglobulin (Ig)E response to allergens and, as a result, provide susceptibility to atopic disease. Two recent reports suggested that a major gene controlling basal IgE levels in humans was transmitted in a pattern consistent with autosomal recessive inheritance and was located on the long arm of chromosome 5 in the interleukin (IL)-4 gene complex. Objective The purpose of this report is to evaluate evidence for linkage of IgE with polymorphic genetic markers in the candidate region of 5q in four large pedigrees originally selected for studies of atopy.Method Four large, highly characterized pedigrees in which IgE levels had been determined and genotypes at markers in the 5q candidate region were evaluated using both lod score and sib pair methods of analysis. Results In these pedigrees, we reject close to moderate hnkage (up to 5 cM) of an IgE locus with markers on 5q.Conclusion The genetic aspects of IgE regulation and its role in atopy remain controversial. The data suggest that should major genes be involved in the inheritance of atopy susceptibility, they are likely to be multiple in number and likely to involve interaction with other (exogenous) environmental exposures.

Notes: A new levitation apparatus coupled to a synchrotron-derived x-ray source has been developed to study the structure of liquids at temperatures up to 3000 K. The levitation apparatus employs conical nozzle levitation using aerodynamic forces to stably position solid and liquid specimens at high temperatures. A 270 W CO2 laser was used to heat the specimens to desired temperatures. Two optical pyrometers were used to record the specimen temperature, heating curves, and cooling curves. Three video cameras and a video recorder were employed to obtain and record specimen views in all three dimensions. The levitation assembly was supported on a three-axis translation stage to facilitate precise positioning of the specimen in the synchrotron radiation beam. The levitation system was enclosed in a vacuum chamber with Be windows, connections for vacuum and gas flow, ports for pyrometry, video, and pressure measurements. The vacuum system included automatic pressure control and multi-channel gas flow control. A phosphor screen coupled to a high-resolution video microscope provided images of the x-ray beam and specimen shadow which were used to establish the specimen position. The levitation apparatus was integrated with x-ray diffractometers located at X-6B and X-25 beamlines at the National Synchrotron Light Source. X-ray structural measurements have been obtained on a number of materials including Al2O 3, Ni, Si, Ge, and other metallic and ceramic materials in the liquid state. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A new technique for synthesizing small batches of oxide-based ceramic and glass materials from high purity powders is described. The method uses continuous wave CO2 laser beam heating of material held on a water-cooled copper hearth. Contamination which would normally result during crucible melting is eliminated. Details of the technique are presented, and its operation and use are illustrated by results obtained in melting experiments with a-aluminum oxide, Y–Ba–Cu–O superconductor material, and the mixtures, Al2O3–SiO2, Bi2O3–B2O3, Bi2O3–CuO. Specimen masses were 0.05–1.5 g. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
