    Notes: Complementary intersubband and interband optical measurements have been employed in order to study the bias dependence of the carrier distribution and energy level alignment within a GaAs–AlGaAs quantum cascade structure. Using these techniques, we have measured the redistribution of electrons throughout the bridging regions and upper states in the active regions with increasing bias. The high quality of the sample gives very narrow linewidths in the optical spectra, permitting the resolution of transitions involving closely spaced energy levels. This has allowed the direct observation of level alignment at the onset of current flow through the device. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The commonest eruption styles of basaltic volcanoes involve Hawaiian lava fountaining or intermittent Strombolian explosions. We investigate the ways in which magma rise speed at depth, magma volatile content and magma viscosity control which of these eruption styles takes place. We develop a model of the degree of coalescence between gas bubbles in the magma which allows us to simulate the transition between the two extreme styles of activity. We find that magma rise speed is the most important factor causing the transition, with gas content and viscosity also influencing the rise speed at which the transition occurs. Counter to intuitive expectations, a decrease in gas content does not cause a transition from Hawaiian to Strombolian activity, but instead causes a transition to passive effusion of vesicular lava. Rather, a change from Hawaiian to Strombolian style requires a significant reduction in magma rise speed.

    Notes: Explosive eruptions of mafic magmas produce lava fountains whose heights are a function of the exsolved volatile content of the magma, its erupted mass flux, and the geometry of the vent (which may be an elongate fissure or a localized, near-circular conduit). The geometry of the initial vent (and the eruptive behaviour) can be distinctly modified by lava drainback and accumulating ejecta. Hot pyroclasts landing near the vent may coalesce to form rootless flows, some of which may drain back into the vent to be recycled into the eruption products. Rootless flows may be at least partially confined by pre-existing topographic features, or by spatter or cinder ramparts being built up by the eruption itself, so that they accumulate into a lava pond over and around the vent. The erupting jet of magmatic gas and pyroclasts must force its way through such a pond and will entrain some of the pond lava as it does so. The energy expended in entraining and accelerating previously erupted materials will reduce the eruption velocity and the lava fountain height by an amount which can be calculated as a function of the eruption conditions and the lava pond depth (or lava drainback rate). The results of such calculations are presented, and are used to assess the influence of this process on attempts to infer magma volatile contents from field observations of lava fountain heights.

    Notes: Soymilk made from lipoxygenase-free soybeans had less cooked beany aroma, less cooked beany flavor and less astringency and was rated darker and more yellow than that made from soybeans with normal lipoxygenase. Sensory descriptive panelists noted no differences between lipoxygenase-free and normal soybeans for milky flavor, wheat flavor, thickness, chalkiness or aftertaste. Tofu made from lipoxygenase-free soybeans had less cooked beany flavor than that made from normal soybeans. There were no differences in cooked beany aroma, raw beany aroma, raw beany flavor, wheat flavor, astringency, hardness, darkness or yellowness. Native-born Japanese, Chinese and U.S. descriptive panelists differed in responses to flavor, texture and color of soymilk and tofu.

    Notes: Glutaraldehyde cross-linking followed by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis has been used to detect aggregates of iysozyme in solutions which lead to crystals. In solutions of varying NaCl content, the number of aggregates was found to be related to the ionic strength of the solution. Solutions of 1% NaCl, pH 4.0 were monomeric while those containing 7–15% NaCl, pH 4.0 were shown to be as much as 36% aggregated and 64% monomeric. The aggregates detected at the highest salt and protein concentration studied were composed of dimers, trimers and tetramers. The aggregates increased by addition of single units suggesting the aggregation pathway to be that of monomer addition. The kinetics of the cross-linking reaction were slow preventing a study of either the time dependence of aggregation or the effect of temperature on aggregate distributions. Comparison of the total aggregate concentrations for NaCl and Na2SO4 showed that the concentration of aggregates was related to the ionic strength of the solution suggesting that in both crystallization and precipitation, electrostatic shielding of like-charged protein molecules is necessary in order for aggregation to occur.

    Notes: Abstract. Amphibian populations appear to be declining around the world. Although there is no single cause, one factor may be pollution from heavy metals. As a result of mining in the Silver Valley of Idaho, heavy metals have been released into habitats containing many species of sensitive organisms, including spotted frogs (Rana luteiventris). While the gross extent of pollution has been well documented, the more subtle behavioral effects of heavy metals such as lead, zinc, and cadmium are less well studied. We tested the effects of heavy metals on the short-term survival (LC50) of spotted frog tadpoles. Compared to single metals, metals presented together were toxic at lower doses. We also raised the tadpoles in outdoor mini-ecosystems containing either a single heavy metal or soil from an EPA Superfund site in the Silver Valley known to be composed of numerous heavy metals. Exposure to Silver Valley soil resulted in delayed metamorphosis. We tested the ability of metal-exposed tadpoles to detect and respond to chemical cues emanating from predacious rainbow trout. We found that high levels of Silver Valley soil, medium levels of zinc, and medium and high levels of lead resulted in a decreased fright response. Low levels of cadmium, zinc, and lead did not cause a significant effect, but low levels of soil did result in a decreased fright response. Heavy metals may alter interactions between tadpoles and their predators.

Objective and Design: To derive a model describing the SH3 domain-mediated assembly of the activated NADPH oxidase.¶Materials: Recombinant SH3 domain and Pro-rich fusion proteins were used to investigate potential co-associations.¶Methods: Interactions were assessed using biotinylated overlay assays and the yeast two hybrid system. Association with p47phox from cell lysates was examined by immunoblot analysis.¶Results: The association between p47- and p22phox involves the SH3 domains of p47phox functioning in tandem. The Pro-rich motif in p47phox interacts with both p40phox and the COOH-terminal SH3 domain of p67phox.¶Conclusions: In the resting cell, the Pro-rich motif of p47phox interacts with the SH3 domain of p40phox, which in turn associates with p67phox. Upon activation, the p47-p40phox regulatory complex dissociates, permitting the association of p47phox with the COOH-terminal SH3 domain of p67phox. This complex translocates to the plasma membrane and associates with cytochrome b558, via interaction of the tandem SH3 domains of p47phox with the p22phox Pro-rich motif.
