Notes: Summary The three-dimensional ultrastructure of glomerular basement membrane (GBM) and mesangial matrix (MM) at an early stage of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes mellitus in rats was examined by the quick-freezing and deep-etching method. In diabetic rats, the GBM inner layer was diffusely enlarged and the meshwork structure not only in the GBM middle layer but also in the MM became markedly irregular due to the rupture of fine fibrils. This irregularity and enlargement of the mesh pores in diabetic rats developed during the experimental period and was significantly different from results in control rats. Insulin treatment from 1 week after STZ injection had significant effects in preventing the ultrastructural changes in the GBM and MM. It is suggested that early insulin treatment has significant effects in preventing size barrier disturbance of GBM and MM in STZ-induced diabetes.

Notes: Abstract. We present a case of large splenic hemangiosarcoma in a 40-year-old man associated with consumptive coagulopathy. Computed tomography showed radial calcification within the splenic tumor. On magnetic resonance imaging, T2 shortening represented a meshwork of calcification and surrounding fibrosis. The possibility of hemangiosarcoma should be considered when a large splenic tumor with massive calcification is noted.

Notes: We have implemented interference imaging mode as well as Lorentz imaging mode on a scanning transmission electron microscope (HITACHI HF-2000 with a scanning option; 200 kV accelerating voltage). In the interference mode, a pair of mutually coherent fine probes scan simultaneously across the region of magnetic induction. By monitoring the relative phase change occurring in the probe pair, the variation of the magnetic flux bound by the probe trajectories can be sensed by the universal unit of e/h (−||e||: electron charge and h: Planck's constant). The combined use of this imaging mode with the Lorentz mode which is based on the detection of the probe deflection by Lorentz force facilitates detailed analyses of fringing field around magnetic materials and magnetic induction inside magnetic films. The microscope described above is particularly suited for the study of magnetic storage devices whose microscopic magnetic properties are drawing much attention recently. We show here the results of its application to the observation of field distributions near the MR (magnetoresistive) heads and induction distributions associated with high density longitudinal and perpendicular recording media. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract YbBa 2 Cu 4 O 8 (Yb124) films were prepared on SrTiO 3 (001) and SrTiO 3 (110) substrates by coating-pyrolysis process at ambient pressure, and the alignments of these films were investigated by XRD θ-2θ scanning and XRD pole-figure analysis. Films prepared on SrTiO 3 (001) consisted of almost single-phase [001]-oriented epitaxial Yb124. On the other hand, films on SrTiO 3 (110) consisted of [107]-oriented epitaxial Yb124 and other impurity phases, one of which was considered to be so-called “other perovskite” phase.
