    Notes: A Thomson scattering system with an obliquely backscattered configuration with a novel, high throughput collection system was developed and tested on a plasma confinement device, the compact helical system. It can yield the full profiles of electron temperature and density along a major radius with the spatial resolution ranging from 1.5 to 4 cm at a repetition rate of up to 250 Hz. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have observed spin-glass freezing in a nominally pure single crystal of the S=1 linear-chain Heisenberg antiferromagnet Ni(C2H8N2)2NO2(ClO4)(NENP) by direct current (dc), linear alternating current (ac), and nonlinear ac susceptibility measurements.     Notes: Abstract Our purpose was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of MRI in moyamoya disease. We studied 30 patients with this disease, comparing MRI and angiographic findings. The diagnostic value of MRI was evaluated for occlusive lesions, collateral vessels, and parenchymal lesions. In all patients bilateral occlusion or stenosis of the supraclinoid internal carotid artery and proximal anterior and middle cerebral arteries was clearly shown by MRI, and staging of the extent of occlusion agreed with angiographic staging in 44 (73%) of 60 arteries. MRI, particularly coronal images, clearly showed basal cerebral moyamoya vessels in 54 hemispheres, and 45 of a total of 71 large leptomeningeal and transdural collateral vessels were identified. MRI also showed parenchymal lesions in 48 (80%) hemispheres, and the extent of occlusion in the anterior and posterior circulations respectively correlated with white matter and cortical and/or subcortical infarcts.

    Notes: Abstract We evaluated the clinical effectiveness of contrast-enhanced three-dimensional (3D) magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) for diagnosing head and neck haemangiomas. We studied six patients using a magnetization prepared rapid acquisition gradient-echo (MP-RAGE) sequence on a 1.5-T system. Conventional T1- and T2-weighted and contrast-enhanced images were also obtained. The images were compared with histological findings. In four cavernous haemangiomas, a mass was partially visible as an enhancing lesion on the early phase of MRA, and was completely visible as a larger enhancing lesion in the late phase, showing slow blood flow. In two capillary haemangiomas, a mass was completely visible in the early phase showing fast flow. In all patients, MRA clearly showed both the haemangiomas and the external carotid artery branches. MRA allowed assessment of the relationship between the haemangiomas and the feeding arteries, and of the haemodynamics.

    Notes: Abstract Our purpose was to assess the diagnostic accuracy of three-dimensional (3D) gradient-echo (GRE) MRI in the diagnosis of internal derangements of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). We studied 140 joints in 70 patients with TMJ internal derangements. We obtained 3D-GRE and spin-echo (SE) images in the closed-mouth position; the images were reviewed for disc displacement as well as bone and cartilage abnormalities. The 3D-GRE and SE images were interpreted independently by different radiologists. The sensitivity and specificity of 3D-GRE imaging for assessing mediolateral disc displacement was 100 %, whereas the sensitivity and specificity of sagittal SE images were 82 % and 72 %, respectively (P 〈 0.001). The 3D-GRE images also demonstrated more bone abnormalities (in 112 condyles or 80 %) than did SE images (in 79 condyles or 56 %) (P 〈 0.001). Furthermore, 3D-GRE imaging revealed articular cartilage abnormalities in 46 condyles (33 %) that were not visible on SE images. The frequency of pain was significantly higher in joints with bone and cartilage abnormalities (P 〈 0.05 and P 〈 0.001, respectively). For assessment of disc displacement, 3D-GRE images were superior to sagittal SE images alone, and comparable to combined sagittal and coronal SE images, while for bone and cartilage abnormalities, they were superior to sagittal and coronal SE images.

    Notes: P-31 can be activated to β-emitter P-32 with 14.3 days half-life by neutron bombardment. A chemically durable glass containing a large amount of phosphorus is believed to be useful for in situ irradiation of cancers. When they are subjected to neutron bombardment and injected around the tumor, they can irradiate directly a cancer without giving radiation to normal tissues. In this study, a pure silica glass was implanted with phosphorus and nitrogen ions by a dose of 5×1016 cm-2 at 30 and 14 keV, respectively, and subjected to two-step heat treatments at 400°C in H2 and then at 900°C in O2. In the first step, phosphorus colloids were grown in the silica glass. In the second step, the colloids were encapsulated in a SiO2−P2O5 glass film formed at their surfaces and the structural damage produced by ion implantation was healed. It is speculated that the implanted nitrogen forms silicon oxynitride in the glass, strengthening the silica network and suppressing the evaporation of phosphorus during heat treatment. The prepared glass did not dissolve phosphorus or silicon, even after soaking in distilled water at 95°C for 7 days, and hence is believed to be useful for radiotherapy of cancers.
