Notes: For 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ)-treated (Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3Oz[(Bi,Pb)-2223] super- conductors, a superstructure which can be described as 2a0×2b0×c0 has been observed by electron diffraction. Superconductivity is virtually destroyed in the TCNQ-treated (Bi,Pb)-2223 cuprate. Superconductivity (with Tc up to 110 K) may be recovered for a TCNQ-treated sample by being annealed in flowing oxygen gas. Then the 2a0×2b0×c0 superstructure is found to disappear. This suggests that the superstructure may be caused by an ordering of oxygen vacancies. High resolution transmission electron microscopic observations reveal that the oxygen vacancies reside not only in the CuO2 sheets, but also likely in the SrO sheets. A model for the superlattice in both CuO2−x and SrO1−y sheets is proposed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The profile of the interaction potential between polystyrene latex particle and chemically modified glass surface was estimated directly by the evanescent wave light scattering microscope (EVLSM) method; this enables us to measure the distance between particle and surface as a function of time in the order of less than a millisecond. The minimum of the potential profile, which is the result of an electrostatic repulsion and an apparent attraction by gravity between the particle and surface, was clearly observed. To change the electrostatic nature, the glass surface was chemically modified by treatment with a silanization reagent and a vinyl monomer with a sulfonate group. As the absolute value of the zeta potential of the glass surface became larger, the position of the potential minimum on the interaction potential profile shifted away from the glass surface, reflecting an increase of electrostatic repulsion between the particle and the wall. The ionic strength dependence of the potential profile was also clearly observed. In conclusion, EVLSM is a powerful tool for the quantitative estimation of particle-wall interactions.

Notes: Abstract Background: Changes in blood hormone and cytokine were investigated in patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy via insufflation (CO2 group) vs those who had abdominal wall-lifting (Air group). Methods: Seventeen female patients with cholecystolithiasis were randomly divided into two groups. Peripheral blood samples were obtained during perioperative period, and plasma hormone levels (ACTH, cortisol) and serum cytokine levels (TNFα, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10) were measured. Results: The number of circulating lymphocytes significantly decreased at 1 h after surgery in both groups, but the decrease in the CO2 group was significantly smaller than that in the Air group. There was no significant difference in hormone elevation between groups. Serum concentrations of IL-6 and IL-10 in the Air group were significantly higher than in the CO2 group. Conclusions: CO2 insufflation may reduce cytokine production in laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Notes: Abstract Thermoanalytical methods provide important means for studying oxygen stoichiometries in highT c superconducting cuprates. The optimum annealing temperature for a desired oxygen content in the superconducting product or in related materials can be established by thermogravimetric measurements. By performing the final annealing in a thermobalance the amount of the incorporated or released oxygen can be conveniently both controlled and determined. Furthermore, the absolute oxygen content in the end product can be analyzed by the thermogravimetric reduction method. Finally, the stability of the oxygen content under various atmospheres can be checked utilizing either thermogravimetric or differential thermal analysis techniques. The potential and applications of thermal analysis within the above themes of cuprate superconductor research are reviewed and discussed using illustrative examples from the authors' own experimental works as well as from the literature.

Notes: Abstract Significant changes in the local atomic structure and lattice dynamics were observed by pulsed neutron inelastic scattering measurements on YBa2Cu4O8 both around the superconducting transition temperature and around the spin-gap temperature. These observations and earlier results of numerical calculations on the enhancement of electron-lattice interaction by electron correlation lead to a novel picture of unconventional lattice-induced superconductivity related to antiferroelectric instability.

Notes: Abstract The oxygen contents and valences of cations in various superconducting cuprates such as Bi2Sr2(Ca, Y)Cu2O y , Tl2Ba2Ca n −1Cu n O y , etc. which contain two kinds of multi-valence metals have been determined by novel wet chemical methods. The wet chemical methods are based on the differences in oxidation power of each cation and at the last step an electrochemical method is employed for measuring the amount of reducing agent, i.e., CuCl. For superconducting Bi-based cuprates, a modified constant-current coulometry has been developed. For the superconducting Tl-based cuprates a constant-potential electrolysis method which makes it easy to control the electrolysis potential has been applied. The results obtained for Bi2Sr2(Ca, Y)Cu2O y have shown that both Bi- and Cu-valences decrease with increasing Y, which is consistent with the results of earlier works. The results obtained for the double Tl-O layer superconductors show that the Tl valence is about +3 in all the thallium cuprates and different from the value obtained from XPS measurements of earlier works. The reason for this discrepancy is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Superconducting Y-Ba-Cu-O bulks with J c as high as 30 kA /cm 2 (at 77 K and 1 T) containing both Y-123 and Y-211 phases were utilized in the present work . With different post-annealings, we obtained samples with different degrees of peak effect in the J c -vs- H characteristics. Using specimens with TEM observable areas as wide as 20 × 20 (μm) 2 , large-area high-resolution transmission-electron-microscopic (LA-HRTEM) observations were made for the samples with different degrees of peak effect. Statistical analyses were made for the size of Y-211 particles and the distance between adjacent twin boundaries. It is revealed that (1) Y-211 particles including those of very small diameters have nothing to do with-the peak effect, while (2) the inter-twin-boundary distance is undoubtully correlated with the degree of peak effect. Further investigation on the twin boundary structure indicates that lower T c regions may be formed in the vicinity of twin boundaries to provide fluxons with mesoscopically distributed weak pinning centers.
